The place we ended up staying was relatively clean but we weren't in the apartment that we paid for. We couldn't check in at 4p because there was reportedly water damage at the apartment. We were told they would call us back in an hour with a new place but we had to call them back repeatedly and finally got a hold of someone on the phone after 10pm and after paying additional money. Less space. Very poor communication. Location supposedly has to be changed and the host would not disclose the new location or any details about it until we paid the extra guest fees - which we did pay despite being over charged. We needed a place to stay and felt like we were being scammed. The host was rude in the messages and threatened to cancel our reservation without refund if we didn't pay the extra. There were 3 towels for 4 people - we paid for 5 people. We never saw anyone in person. The key was in a lockbox on a fire hydrant and the host wouldn't disclose the address until we had the keys in hand. It was all very shady and majorly anxiety provoking. In retrospect, I'm certain this is an illegal rental in NYC. Wish I knew that before we booked. We did call VRBO for back up and were told just to pay the extra....
