About the host
Hosted by Stephanie Kowal
We’re both artists who fell in love with the quiet beauty of the high desert. What started as a personal getaway quickly became a passion project, restoring and thoughtfully updating this home so others could experience the same sense of calm and openness that first drew us here.
We love hosting because travel is about more than a place to sleep, it’s about creating space to reconnect, reset, and breathe a little deeper. Whether guests are hiking Joshua Tree, stargazing from the hot tub, or simply enjoying a slow morning coffee on the patio, we love knowing the home plays a small part in those memories.
We take pride in keeping the property professionally maintained and guest-ready, and we’re always happy to share our favorite local recommendations. We have many!!
Why they chose this property
The Nelson House sits on 1.9 private acres with sweeping desert views and big open skies. Mornings are quiet and peaceful, often accompanied by quail, roadrunners, and the occasional desert breeze. Evenings bring incredible sunsets and some of the clearest stargazing in Southern California.
Despite the privacy, you’re just minutes from Joshua Tree’s cafés, shops, and the National Park entrance. It’s the perfect balance of solitude and accessibility, close enough to explore, far enough to truly unwind.
We especially love how the landscape changes throughout the day. Golden light in the morning, dramatic shadows at dusk, and a stillness at night that’s hard to find elsewhere.
What makes this property unique
What truly sets The Nelson House apart is that it wasn’t designed by a developer, it was restored and renovated by us, with care and intention.
Originally built in the 1960s, the home had wonderful bones and quiet desert charm. We thoughtfully updated it ourselves, preserving its character while modernizing it for comfort and reliability. As artists, beauty and function have always mattered deeply to us. Every detail, from the layout flow to the textures and colors, was chosen to create a space that feels warm, grounded, and welcoming.
This isn’t a “styled for photos only” rental. It’s a home that was loved first, then shared.
The 1.9 acres offer privacy and sweeping views, while the surrounding neighborhood has its own desert personality! Don’t be surprised if you see neighbors’ goats wandering down the road or catch sight of quail darting across the yard. It’s peaceful, slightly quirky, and very much part of what makes the high desert special.
