About the host
Hosted by Spencer Wilking
My name is Spencer and I live in New Orleans. Originally from Boston, I was first introduced to the city as a Tulane student. After Katrina, I spent sixteen years living in New York City before returning to New Orleans with my family; just three weeks before Hurricane Ida made landfall. I'm grateful to, once again, call this city home.
Why they chose this property
We love the Irish Channel with its quaint shotgun homes, creole cottages and deep history. Located a block off Magazine street a number of great bars, shops and restaurants are within an easy walk. The Garden District begins across the street with Anne Rice's house only two blocks away. We enjoy evening walks among the Oaks and love being part of New Orleans' living history.
What makes this property unique
It was built in the early 20th century as a one story double shotgun. Around 1911, someone raised the house up and added the first floor. On the balcony you’ll notice more decorative features on the doors and windows as these were the original entryways to the home. At the same time the columns and portico were added and the lil’ shotgun turned into a Greek revival mash-up. At some point the house was converted into a single family home and in 2016 was on the receiving end of a thorough, top-to-bottom renovation.
We love thinking of all the lives lived and incredible history this space has seen in its 125 years.
We’re honored to be a part of its lineage and as the current stewards of 1021 1st Street, we welcome you in enjoying its history and amenities!
