SUMMARY

The best part of this place is at the bottom of the stairs: a wide sand beach on Lake Huron, a firepit ringed in stone, and water shallow enough to wade out. Up top, a private 2-bedroom cottage sleeping 6 in real beds. The owners` house shares the property but sits empty while you`re here — you won`t be sharing space with anyone. Fair warning: the kitchenette has a fridge, microwave, toaster oven and coffee maker, but no stove.

THE SPACE

A simple, comfortable place with a really good beach. The cottage was renovated recently — floors, paint, kitchen and bath are all in good shape — and the furnishings are practical rather than fancy. The beach is the reason to come.

Everything`s on one level. The living area opens off the entry with seating, a TV, and a table for four. The kitchenette has a full-size fridge, microwave, toaster oven, portable electric cooktop and coffee maker — no built-in range, but you can cook.

Bedroom one has a twin-over-full bunk plus two more beds. Bedroom two has two beds and a closet. Six people, six actual beds — no air mattresses, no sofa beds. The full bath has a tub/shower combo.

Outside: a patio with picnic table and porch swing, a grassy yard with a basketball hoop, and stairs down to wide sand and a firepit at the water.

GUEST ACCESS

The cottage is yours for your whole stay — your own entrance, your own patio, and the yard around it. Parking for 2-3 cars is right alongside.

There`s a second house on the property that the owners use, but they won`t be staying there while you`re here. You`ve got the place to yourself.

Beach access is down a wooden staircase from the top of the bluff. It`s a long set of stairs — worth knowing if anyone in your group has trouble with them, and kids should have an adult along. At the bottom you`ve got your own private stretch of sand and a firepit at the water. There are neighboring cottages along the shore, so you`ll see people out on the beach, but the frontage in front of you is yours.

The shed at the bottom of the stairs is owner storage and isn`t available to guests.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

You`re on the Lake Huron shore just south of Harbor Beach, in Michigan`s Thumb. This stretch of coast is quiet — mostly cottages, farm fields, and water. That`s the appeal.

Facing east means the sun comes up over the lake. Worth setting an alarm for at least once.

In town, Harbor Beach has the largest man-made freshwater harbor in the world, and you can walk the Trescott Street Pier out over a thousand feet for the view back at the shoreline. The 19th-century lighthouse out at the breakwall runs boat tours in summer. Kayakers come here to paddle over shallow-water shipwrecks you can see straight down into on a calm day.

The city park in town has a swimming beach, playground, restrooms and a snack bar, plus kayak and paddleboard rentals — handy on a day you want a change from your own beach. The Harbor View Trail links the marina, parks and downtown if you want to walk it.

Downtown is small and walkable: a handful of restaurants, a few shops, the Frank Murphy birthplace museum. Grocery and gas are in town.

Head south along M-25 and you`ll hit White Rock roadside park and eventually Port Sanilac and Lexington. North takes you toward Port Hope, Pointe aux Barques, and Port Austin.

GETTING AROUND

You`ll want a car. There`s no rideshare out here to speak of, no public transit, and everything — town, groceries, restaurants, the marina — is a short drive up M-25.

Parking for 2-3 cars is right alongside the cottage, so bring what you need.

M-25 runs the whole Lake Huron shoreline, which makes day trips easy. Head north for Port Hope, Pointe aux Barques and Port Austin, or south toward Port Sanilac and Lexington. It`s one of the better drives in the state — water on one side, farmland on the other, small towns every fifteen minutes.

Once you`re settled in, you won`t need the car much. The beach is at the bottom of your own stairs.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

A few things worth knowing before you book:

THE PROPERTY
The main house on the property belongs to the owners and is not part of your rental. It stays empty while you`re here — you won`t be sharing the cottage or the yard with anyone — but the house itself isn`t available to guests.

THE KITCHEN
There is no stove or oven. You`ve got a full-size fridge, microwave, toaster oven, portable electric cooktop and coffee maker, so you can cook — just plan meals around a countertop setup rather than a full range.

THE BEACH
Beach access is yours, down a long wooden staircase from the top of the bluff. Take it slow, and keep kids with an adult. The shed at the bottom of the stairs is owner storage and is not available for guest use.

THE COTTAGE ITSELF
Simple and clean rather than luxurious. Recently renovated, comfortably furnished, and honestly priced for what it is. If you`re after a polished resort-style rental, this isn`t it. If you want a good beach and a straightforward place to sleep, you`ll be happy here.

HOUSE RULES
No smoking inside. No pets. Check-in is 4pm, check-out is 10am.
