Good Bear Ranch Mountain Retreat - Connect with What You Love
See also: goodbearranch.com This, one of a kind, rustic log home tucked into the base of the Elkhorn Mountains is anything but rustic when it comes to amenities. It is a large (5200 Sq. Ft.) home located on 250 acres bordered by Wallowa Whitman National Forest. There is scenery, hiking, snowshoeing, wildlife and big starry skies right out the backdoor. You are within minutes of The Elkhorn Crest Trail and many Wilderness access options. Anthony Lakes ski area is 19 miles away. It is a 10 mile trip into Historic Baker City. Please be aware that this is a "country experience". This means that there is more dust, especially after a hot, dry summer. There are also flies that migrate into the house during warm days accompanied by cold fall nights. This lasts for 3-4 weeks from late September until mid to late October. They are harmless but admittedly annoying. If this is a concern for you then please check with me before renting during this time of the year. Seven plus bedrooms and four baths accommodate up to 16 people. Air mattresses are available for overflow. It is a perfect spot for a group retreat or workshop. The main living areas are well suited to meetings or workshops in a relaxed, elegant setting. WiFi access lets everyone stay in touch with customers while enjoying a few days of team building. Please note that wifi is Satellite which means 3-4 average users but not high performance as one might want for multible video game streamers.
Behind the house there is a grassy, wooded area with a large fire pit, water access and picnic table. Make smores, tell stories or simply listen to the elk bugling across the meadow. The house has a large wrap around deck, including a furnished, covered area (we lounge over coffee and breakfast here in warm weather) near the kitchen/main entry.
The house was built in 1979 with large diameter, hand hewn spruce logs. We recently completed a three year renovation project that provides top quality finish materials and modern amenities. The casual but elegant feel of the house is accentuated by hardwood floors, granite countertops, oriental carpets, chrystal chandeliers, antique furniture, leather couches original artwork and fine bedding. It has a gourmet kitchen (farm sink, professional, dual fuel range) capable of feeding a crowd. Two massive floor to ceiling stone fireplaces grace the main living areas, both upstairs and down. There are spectacular views out every window.
There are two open loft bedrooms. One with two twin beds and one with a queen bed. There is a catwalk between bedrooms overlooking the living room. The privacy is a bit limited here but the charm is not.
The main floor hosts a large entry way for depositing all of your outdoor gear, aforementioned kitchen with counter seating for 8-10, dining room with seating at the large table for up to 14 and a comfy conversation area of leather sofa and chairs, an additional sitting room with sofa, four comfy chairs and TV/DVD, small bath with toilet, shower and sink, large 'spa' bath with jetted tub and two sinks, small sun room perfect for a temporary bedroom or warming up on a winter day. Most of the main floor has high vaulted ceilings of knotty pine tongue and groove planks. For those requiring a main floor (No Stairs) bedroom option, the sitting room can be closed off with curtains and the hideaway queen sofa bed can be set up.
Downstairs are five more bedrooms, two bathrooms and an expansive game room. The master bedroom (Pineberry)has a queen bed, pull out queen couch and TV/DVD. The master bath has a toilet, shower and two sinks. The pink (Ladyslipper)room has a queen bed, large closet and child's pop up, portable 'crib'. The (Cedarberry)room has a queen bed and large closet. The blue (Huckleberry)has a double bed. The yellow (Sunburst)has a double bed. The game room has a pool/ping pong table, foosball table, TV/DVD/Wii and access to high speed network. Please note that the Blue Room is in a corner location reachable through either the Cedarberry or Sundburst rooms. It does not have direct access.

We love baker city and this was the PERFECT spot to stay during our break away from big city life. The house is homey, the property well maintained, and the communication fantastic.
Beautiful house that was spacious and set in an amazing area. This was a great escape from the city. Tons to do and had everything we needed for our stay.

Stunning views, spacious rooms, amazing kitchen, the bathrooms were easy to share, the toy closet for the kids was exceptional. We had the most beautiful time at Good Bear Ranch. An absolute gem to call home for a long weekend. Looking forward to booking again next winter!

Very comfortable and clean
This home was great for my large group. We planned a ski and Cat Ski trip at ANTHONY LAKES and this house was by far the best place in the area we have stayed. Thank you for making our trip enjoyable.

Wonderful
We stayed at Good Bear Ranch for a week long extended family get together. Kids and adults, everyone had a wonderful time. So much to see and appreciate. Very comfortable, beautiful, house and location.
This property is awesome. Great for large groups and all ages. In the winter, kids can go sledding right in the property with parents watching from inside. Highly recommend.
Our family has the pleasure of staying at the Good Bear and we had a wonderful time! We hiked the trails behind the cabin every morning, noon and evening. Saw tons of deer, wild turkeys and birds. Enjoyed the cooking in the gorgeous kitchen and relaxing by the fire! We would stay there again!
This property was absolutely perfect for our small family reunion. The setting is idyllic, the log home is gorgeous, and the kitchen was well stocked. What a perfect place for sharing meals, visits, and relaxed time together as an extended family. Thank you for the privilege!

Wonderful Ski Cabin for Groups
Had a wonderful stay at the Good Bear Ranch. The weather is strange this year, not allowing us to ski at the cabin. We had 13 people this year and everyone loved the cabin. Can't wait for next year.

Thank you so much. We love our returning ski groups.
Our group of 11 ladies ages 69-88 had an great stay at GBR. The location is close to the ski hill and Baker City. The discounted ski tickets were a plus. Accommodations were perfect however the Family Room still has a lumpy mattress but we managed. Lots of options with air mattresses or cots.

Hi Patty,
Thanks for a great review. So glad you guys always have a good time. I am going to see if I can get a new mattress for the pullout in the sitting room. I bought the upgraded version hoping it would last well…not so much, I guess. Thanks for the feedback. Hope to see you next year.

Perfect meeting venue
Our conservation group chose Good Bear Ranch as a venue for a two day planning meeting. It was perfect., big kitchen for meal prep., lots of room for our group to meet and plenty of sleeping space. Country style WiFi is slow but that was not an issue for us.
This was a great location for our family reunion of 15 people. The kitchen was big and made meal preps easy. Kids loved the game room and it kept them occupied when the adults needed some down time. Views were awesome. Saw turkeys, deer, birds and a large herd of elk. It is definitely on our list of places we want to come back to.

Growing up on this property in the Elkhorn Mountains, which was a fully operational cattle ranch in the 1960's, instilled in me a love of nature and conservation. I shadowed my father through days of fence mending, irrigating fields, doctoring calves and the occasional early morning horseback ride up the mountain to watch the sun rise. I continued my interest in the natural world earning a University of Washington BS in Forest Engineering.
I now live in Boise, ID focusing on family, watercolor painting, conservation activism, native gardening and implementing environmentally progressive management practices at Good Bear Ranch.

Why they chose this property
This property has been in my family since I was 5 years old. We lived, and operated a cattle ranch there during the 1960's. In later years we used the property as a family summer home and then my parents retired there in 1978. The log home was built in 1979 by master crafter Don Dickerson and his wife 'Dort'.
What makes this property unique
What sets Good Bear Ranch apart is the experience it creates. This is more than a place to stay-it's a chance to truly disconnect and recharge in a setting that feels both wild and welcoming. Step outside and you're surrounded by wide-open skies, mountain views, and trails that begin at your doorstep. Spend your mornings watching elk or deer cross the meadow, your afternoons exploring the Elkhorn Mountains, and your evenings stargazing in silence broken only by a crackling fire. Inside, thoughtful touches-from antique accents to two-story stone fireplaces-bring warmth and character to every gathering. Unlike most vacation homes, Good Bear Ranch offers total seclusion without sacrificing comfort, creating a rare balance of adventure and ease. Whether you come to celebrate, reflect, or simply breathe deeper, the ranch provides a backdrop that makes every moment memorable.
