Historic granary (Spycher) in Niederwald, Goms, Valais, the birthplace of Caesar Ritz, the founder of the Ritz Hotels
The pretty building next to the "castle" in Niederwald VS was once a typical Valais granary with a small stable on the ground floor and a storeroom/workshop on the upper floor.
Today, after careful remodelling (2010), there is a kitchen-cum-living room on the upper floor and a bedroom with TV, shower and WC and additional washbasin on the ground floor.
The Spycher offers ideal accommodation for two people to enjoy togetherness. Particularly attractive are the balcony, from which you have a good view over the entire village, and the small garden with deckchairs, garden chairs, a table and large umbrella.
Niederwald lies at 1251 metres above sea level in the Goms region of the Upper Valais. The village, which nestles compactly on a slope, still looks unspoilt today - the closely built houses, one above the other, create an effective staggering of the gables and give the village its special character.
There has been a new attraction in Niederwald since December 2019: the 'Station Ritz' with a bistro, shop (local specialities such as cheese, yoghurt, milk, sausages, etc.) and a museum
Niederwald is a quiet village that has retained much of the charm of times gone by. With Caesar Ritz (1850 to 1918, founder of the world-famous Ritz Hotels), the village also has its famous personality. His birthplace is very close to the Spycher. The 'castle' next to the Spycher, to which the Spycher has always belonged, was the birthplace of the Valais portrait painter Justin Lorenz Ritz, whose son was the famous genre painter Raphael Ritz. The region offers various attractions, in summer as a hiking area and for various sports activities (tennis, golf, mountain biking etc.), in winter as a popular cross-country skiing and skiing destination. There are also various attractions in the surrounding area, such as the many traditional villages in Goms, the Binntal valley and the Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Spycher is located in the north-eastern, traffic-free part of the village.
Facilities: The house (non-smoking) is functionally furnished. On the upper floor is the eat-in kitchen with a red kitchenette including ceramic hob, fridge and dishwasher, a sofa, a sideboard and a table. Internet/WLAN and a SONOS speaker are also available. On the ground floor there is a double bed with two mattresses, a TV, a toilet and a small bathroom with shower. Heating is provided by a wood-burning stove in the living room and electric radiators in all rooms.
