It’s wonderfully quiet in Alsterfors. From the terrace, you can watch squirrels and birds—and, with a little luck and at the right time of day, even hares and deer. The nearby Alsterån stream glistens through the trees when the evening sun hits it. At sunset, the trees glow a beautiful red.
The house is situated on a natural lot at the edge of the forest. Surrounded by stunning nature, you can enjoy both a cosy, relaxing holiday and an active, sporty getaway here.
The cottage is small (60 square metres), rustic, and cosy. It’s perfect for a family with one or two young children, for couples, for hikers, and for people who love a little solitude, silence, and nature.
The house has an electric charging station.
The total price includes final cleaning, bed linens, and towels. Of course, pillows and comforters are also provided.
The living room is 1.5 rooms in size. The half-room contains a bed (IKEA Hemnes) that’s somewhat reminiscent of an alcove. Here, you can make yourself comfortable sitting or lying down. If needed, the bed can be converted into a sleeping area measuring 160x200 cm. It’s ideal for lounging, watching TV, reading, or gaming (though you’ll need to bring your own console).
Otherwise, the living room is furnished with four armchairs (two recliners and two reading chairs), a sideboard, a table, and a dining area.
The kitchen also features a small dining area with a table and chairs. Everything you typically need for meal preparation is provided. Just ask us if you need anything specific!
The house has two small bedrooms. Each has two single beds; in one of the rooms, the beds are pushed together to form a double bed. Each room has a closet.
The small bathroom with a window has a walk-in shower, a sink, and a toilet.
There are several steps leading up to the front door, as well as down from the porch into the garden. All of the rooms mentioned are located on one level on the ground floor. Behind a door in the hallway, a staircase leads down to the basement, where a washing machine and a freezer are located.
Geothermal energy provides hot water and heating.
From the living room, kitchen, terrace, and garden, you can see the forest—however, there is no direct access, as the property slopes gently downward and is bordered there by a stone wall. To reach the forest, walk about 100 metres down the access road towards Alsterfors.
Half of the property on which the house stands is natural woodland. The other half, surrounding the house, is lawn. .
From the house, you can take short walks as well as day-long hikes.
You can explore the entire surrounding area by bike.
It’s about 800 metres to the shore of the Alsterån, where the nearest swimming spot is located. This is a natural swimming area. (See photos—taken in spring 2025)
For a longer stay at the swimming lake, we recommend the swimming spots in Alstermo and at Älghultsjön.
The swimming spot in Alstermo is 5–6 km away and is located by the bridge on the access road to the hiking lodge.
Älghultsjön is a larger swimming lake with a swimming area and a swimming dock; it is located in the neighbouring town of Älghult (9 km). It can be reached on foot, by bike, or by car.
At Orranäsasjön (18 km) in Orrefors, there is a picturesquely situated picnic area (Rastplads) for an afternoon coffee or an evening BBQ.
For geocachers: Within a 10-km radius centred on Alsterfors, you’ll find about 40 caches. Three of them are in the immediate vicinity.
The Alsterån River, which flows through Alsterfors to Alstermo and on towards Fröseke, offers plenty of opportunities for fishing.
A fishing licence (Fiskekort) is required.
There is a supermarket in the neighbouring town of Alstermo (6 km).
Alstermo has a pizzeria, and Folkets-Hus offers a good lunch special for about 12 euros per person.
Shopping opportunities are available in Växjö and Kalmar (both 60 km away). There are good restaurants and cafés there.
In the immediate and wider surroundings—as well as throughout Smaland—there are numerous large and small, private and commercial house, yard, and garage sales (“Loppis”). Keep an eye out for signs along the roads. Beautiful, practical, and vintage items. One thing’s for sure: you’ll always find something...
Last but not least: We live 6 km away from Alsterfors in the centre of Alstermo. That means we’re generally right there if you have any questions or need help.

Activities around Alsterfors
First, two recommendations for getting there and back:
Along Riksväg 23 (the shortest route from Malmö to Alsterfors), it’s worth stopping in Höör, where you can shop at City Gross (on the right as you leave town) for lower prices than at the small local supermarkets.
Please display your parking disc. This also applies to Lidl car parks and many others.
Continuing along Riksväg 23, about 20 km before Växjö, Huseby Bruk is located directly on Riksväg 23. A Swedish manor house preserved in its original state, complete with an ironworks, workshop, carpentry shop, etc., offering a fascinating glimpse into the working and living conditions of the 19th century. The idyllic setting of Huseby Bruk alone is worth a stop.
Day trips around Alsterfors, in Småland, and the neighbouring provinces:
Växjö and Kalmar are relatively large cities by Swedish standards, and both are worth a day trip. Växjö offers, among other things, the Emigrant House and the Småland Museum.
Kalmar, located directly on the Baltic Sea, captivates visitors with its castle and also serves as a gateway to the island of Öland, where you can spend wonderful summer days on the beaches.
Kalmars’ old town is always worth a visit. We like to go to “Wayne’s” at the harbour for coffee. In the old town, the Kullzénska caféet, located on the ground floor on Kaggensgatan, is an insider’s tip. (In the summer, tables for guests are also set up outside the door on the shopping street.)
An absolute must-see for every child is Astrid Lindgren’s World in Vimmerby, about a 1.5-hour drive from Alsterfors.
A slightly longer trip—about 2.5 hours by car—takes you to Gränna, on the southeastern shore of Lake Vättern. This is where sweets canes are made: Gränna is also known as the “home of the red-and-white sweets canes.” It’s an experience for all the senses, especially since the town is situated right on the lake. From there, a ferry departs every half hour for the island of Visingsö, where you can visit castle ruins. Gränna is also Sweden’s centre for hot-air ballooning. The polar explorer Andree hailed from here, and a museum in town is dedicated to him.
Europe’s largest Western-themed town is called High Chapparal. It’s located in Kulltorp, and the drive there takes about 1.5 hours. It has everything you’d expect from a modern amusement park.
The Kleva Gruva in Holsbybrunn near Vetlanda is considered Sweden’s most beautiful mine to visit. It’s a 75-minute drive away. Here, you can't only explore the cave but also pan for gold, hunt for treasure, and really let off some steam.
Kosta is just one of many glassblowing workshops in Småland. It’s only about a 25–30-minute drive from Alsterfors. Kosta is also home to a brand-name outlet mall. Right near Kosta is a moose park—just in case you don’t spot any moose in the wild. Experience has shown that this is a real highlight for young children.
Ten minutes away from Kosta, in Lessebo, there’s a handmade paper mill that also offers guided tours.
Both the glassblowing workshop and the paper mill offer workshops at certain times.
Åsnens is a stunningly beautiful national park in Småland, about a 90-minute drive south of Alsterfors. They say Sweden’s trolls live here.
This is just a small glimpse of what Småland has to offer. Scattered throughout the region, you’ll find small, cosy museums of all kinds and authentic country stores and village shops that are still in operation today. There are also cultural reserves and well-marked hiking and biking trails. And, of course, thrift stores as well as house and garage sales (loppis), where just browsing is a lot of fun.
Almost every destination promotes itself with its own website (visitsmaland).
