About this property

A Beautiful Historic House Hidden in the Black Forest with Breathtaking Views.

Hidden away in the hills of the southern Black Forest, our historic house is surrounded by forest, meadow and extraordinary mountain views, with the distant Alps rising along the horizon on clear days. It is a wonderfully peaceful and private setting — secluded enough to feel completely removed from everyday life, yet surprisingly close to Basel, Badenweiler and the Swiss border.

The house has been carefully renovated to the highest standards, while retaining the character that makes an old Black Forest home so special. Inside, contemporary comforts sit alongside beautiful antiques, art and objects collected over many years. It is elegant without being formal, comfortable without being anonymous, and very much a real home rather than a purpose-built holiday rental.

There are two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a guest WC, as well as a charming sitting room, a large kitchen with an exceptional dining room, and generous outdoor space: two large private balconies overlooking the valley, where the views seem to go on forever.

Haus Krandel is a historic house, and there are two other small, completely independent apartments elsewhere in the building. Your accommodation occupies an entire half of the house, exclusively for you- nothing is shared.

You have your own private entrance, your own living spaces, your own bedrooms and bathrooms, your own balconies and your own outdoor areas. There is no shared kitchen, living room, bathroom or communal guest space.

The other apartments are separate and occupied by quiet neighbors, but they will not interfere with your stay. You can settle in, close your door, and enjoy the feeling of having your own house in the Black Forest.

It is an arrangement that gives you the space and atmosphere of a private home, without sacrificing the security and ease of having other people nearby.

A House with a View

The house looks out across one of those landscapes that makes you stop what you are doing.

The valley below is green and deeply wooded, changing character with the seasons and the weather. Beyond it, on clear days, the Alps appear on the horizon — a distant, almost theatrical backdrop to an otherwise wonderfully peaceful rural landscape.

The large balcony next to the dining room will be your outdoor living room.

Coffee in the morning. A book in the afternoon. An aperitif before dinner. A bottle of wine as the last light disappears behind the hills.

Beautifully Restored, Personally Furnished

The house has been renovated with great care, bringing modern comfort to a historic building without stripping away its personality.

This is my family’s vacation retreat, and we have filled it with things we genuinely love: antiques, art, old pieces with a history, and contemporary elements that sit happily beside them.

The result is deliberately eclectic — a little old, a little new, and very European.

It is a house intended to be lived in.

You will find beautiful things, but also comfortable places to put your feet up, linger over breakfast, cook something simple, or spend an evening doing nothing at all.

The Southern Black Forest at Your Door

For walkers and nature lovers, the location is exceptional.

The house is surrounded by the Black Forest, with hiking and walking routes leading through woods, meadows and mountain landscapes. You can leave the house on foot and immediately find yourself in nature.

Yet this is not the kind of remote location where you have to sacrifice everything else.

The spa town of Badenweiler is approximately 20 minutes away, with its thermal baths, restaurants and elegant old-world atmosphere. It makes an especially lovely outing after a morning in the forest: walk, swim, have lunch, and return home to your balcony overlooking the valley.

Basel, Art & Culture

One of the pleasures of this particular corner of the Black Forest is how perfectly it is located.

Basel is a short drive away, including Basel Airport, making the house unusually convenient for international visitors.

During Art Basel, the Basel jewelry fair and the city’s many exhibitions and cultural events, the house becomes an especially appealing alternative to staying in the city itself.

Spend the day surrounded by art, design and culture, then drive home through the countryside and find yourself back in complete silence.

Zurich Airport is approximately an hour away, giving you another convenient international gateway.

The French Alsace region, the Upper Rhine and Switzerland are all within easy reach, making this a wonderful base for exploring the remarkable cultural landscape where Germany, France and Switzerland meet.

For Those Who Appreciate a Certain Kind of Place

This house will particularly appeal to people who prefer character to uniformity and atmosphere to spectacle.

It is not a resort, a modern glass-and-steel villa, or a conventional country cottage.

It is a historic Black Forest home, thoughtfully restored and filled with art and antiques, in an exceptionally beautiful and private setting.

It is equally suited to a romantic escape, a week of hiking and swimming, a cultural trip to Basel, or simply a few days of doing very little.

Come for the forest.

Stay for the view.

And perhaps, as happens surprisingly often here, find that you don’t want to leave.
