About this property

Craftsman Guesthouse/Private/Wooded acreage/Hike, Bike, Ski, Read, Relax

Our Guesthouse is a tidy little craftsman home, trimmed with locally milled alder which was logged when the home was built in 2014. We charge $100/night plus cleaning with weekly discounts. We ask that all guests be vaccinated and boosted.

The Guesthouse is set on 2 wooded acres in the Foothills area of Whatcom County, 100 yards from the Middle Fork of the Nooksack River and 20 miles from the Mt. Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest. Fishing or walking the river are options. Eagles are abundant during the winter salmon runs and our area is a favorite location for photographers. We've viewed beaver swimming upstream, we've had black bear and cougar through the property, and resident deer and eagles. It's pretty wonderful.

The Guesthouse sleeps 4 comfortably with a downstairs bedroom and upstairs loft. The loft is reached by a steep stairway so please monitor if you have small children. Regrettably, the maximum number of guests, whether adult or child, is 2/bed, 4 total. There is a full kitchen but no television or clothes washer/dryer. Verizon Wireless gets good reception but we can't speak for other providers. High-speed internet, coffee, pancake mix and oatmeal are always provided. Regrettably, no pets.

Situated on a dead end country road, the house is nestled between the Middle Fork of the Nooksack River and the northern flank of the Van Zandt Dike in an area that boasts delightful views and abundant wildlife. Walk the trails and river, watch the eagles, photograph the deer that wander through. It is a quiet space with pleasant country neighbors. While it's just fine to sit inside and watch the sun go down, a significant number of guests come to either hike the trails, ski the slopes or photograph the eagles. There are several excellent locations for the latter within a very short distance. We'd be glad to help you locate them.

Our guesthouse is a convenient location for a number of noteworthy outdoor events that occur in our county over the course of the year. In February, the Mt. Baker Ski Area--which holds the record for the greatest seasonal snowfall in a single year--hosts the Legendary Banked Slalom, a 3-day event that has made Mt. Baker famous. We are 40 miles from the ski area, an hour-long drive that is staggering in its beauty.

Winter transitions to spring in late May with the incomparable Ski to Sea Race, a multi-sport event that draws international competitors, hundreds of participants and exploits the full range of our area's recreational offerings: skiing and snowboarding, canoeing, kayaking, running and biking. It all culminates in Fairhaven and is a signature event unlike anything else.

And, in June, the metropolis of Deming hosts the Deming Logging Show, another iconic event that dazzles the crowds whether or not you've ever fired up a chain saw. You'll find the logging show grounds just 10 miles west, in the opposite direction from Mt. Baker.

Snuggled in between these unique events is the ongoing charm and beauty of our area. Our road alone features a number of trails through both undeveloped DNR land and land held in trust by the Whatcom Land Trust. A rather spectacular seasonal display of Chum salmon, with Pinks in odd-numbered years, can be witnessed in early winter by lucky visitors if your timing is good.

There is a full kitchen but no television or clothes washer/dryer. We are happy to let you use our washer/dryer if you like. Verizon Wireless gets good reception but we can't speak for other providers. We'll keep you in coffee, pancake mix and oatmeal. Regrettably, no pets.

Other nearby destinations lie only slightly further afield and include the idyllic Silver Lake Park, the charming little towns of Maple Falls and Glacier and, of course, the incomparable Mt. Baker National Forest with its abundant year-round recreational offerings: downhill and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and sledding in winter and vast hiking trails and biking opportunities in the spring, summer and fall.

And, as board members of the Friends of the Deming Library, we would be remiss if we failed to mention the location--a mere 5 miles away--of one of the most extraordinary country libraries in the state. The community built it and owns it and it boasts a delightful children's area, current technology, gracious librarians and 6-day-a-week access. It is directly across from the Nooksack Casino in beautiful downtown Deming.

Getting around
The growth of the Bellingham International Airport now means that direct flights to Bellingham are often a reality. Otherwise the airport connects easily with the Seattle International Airport. Our airport, which is just north of the city of Bellingham, is 50 miles south of Vancouver BC and 90 miles north of Seattle.

We are 23 miles due east of the airport. It's a pretty straight shot on roads that are well maintained and offer 55 mph speed limits. Our little country road is also well maintained as well, although you'll have to slow down a bit as you travel down it to reach our guesthouse. Always watch for deer.

Wifi is DSL so, while it streams movies, communicates email, all the normal stuff with no problems, there has been a recent issue with Zoom, specifically. Zoom recently boosted it's resolution rendering our Ziply speed of 12Mbs as insufficient. Apparently Zoom requires 25Mbs.

Google Meet seems fine, however you stand to lose video with Zoom while the audio still works. We wish this weren't the case; we want fiber out in our neck of the woods, however we're learning to be patient. And we are on the same Ziply services next door and, notwithstanding occasional burps in service, do okay with all of our normal use.

In summary, although we are nestled into a fairly secluded area of the county we are easy to access year-round. In fact, the drive to reach us, particularly if you come up the South Fork Valley, is worth the time it takes: rivers, mountains and glaciers are visible from nearly all routes...unless you're driving at night, of course.

While there is a Whatcom Transit bus stop at the head of the road (3 miles away), you are really pretty limited in your choices. You'll need a car. And please be aware: while we have a fairly strict cancellation policy, we will bank any lost funds for a future return so if you re-book in the future they will be applied.

Extremely quiet and tranquil location so close to everything yet so far away from it all at the same time. Lots of natural light with floor to ceiling windows looking at a lovely green landscape, great patio and decks for relaxing in the sunshine while bird and bunny watching.

Property is exactly as described in listing. Property owners have literally thought of everything. I would not change one thing, other than perhaps stay or more day.

Such a lovely getaway!

The cabin is wonderful and cozy. It was a perfect getaway from the city. They provide you with everything you might need. The first night there we saw six eagles flying around, and the next day we saw two more down by the river. Such a magical little place. Leaf and Louise are great with communication as well!

Lovely cabin in a quiet spot

My friend and I were looking for a quiet getaway, with access to Mt. Baker hiking trails. This guesthouse fit the bill perfectly and we had 2 gorgeous hikes in Mt. Baker area. The accommodations were fabulous - spotless, with very comfortable beds, and a well- equipped kitchen; an added bonus was the bottle of wine and flowers to welcome us. Leaf was very helpful and gave us tips on nearby hikes - there is also a very well-equipped library of guidebooks and maps. All in all, a perfect getaway, and we hope to come back again soon.

Clean, cozy, modern, and beautiful.

Leaf and Louise have created a real haven. The cabin is extremely clean, fresh, modern, airy, and filled with natural light. It would be as great for a romantic retreat as it was for a ski crash pad. Leaf and Louise were very easy to work with and had thought of everything we might need. The wifi was strong and the coffee beans were fresh. Very highly recommended.

Amazing peaceful property!

Leaf and Louise were fabulous hosts and have thought of everything you could need in a sweet little house. We loved the picturesque property and it was so beautiful and peaceful that we almost didn’t want to leave to do the hikes we planned in the area. The coffee was wonderful and they have a great selection of tea. We love that they have specific directions for recycling and composting. Loved the cork flooring since it was a bit softer and warmer than other flooring. We grilled out several times with the Weber. There was even a bottle of wine for us. We hope to return in the future if we visit the area again. It would be our first choice for sure.

Off The Beaten Track... Thankfully!

I've been traveling all over the world for many, many years, and I have to say this property was just short of a revelation! I expected it to be a great place to write and hang out based solely on the pictures and previous reviews. But when I arrived to discover its beautiful isolation amongst heavily wooded grounds, nestled against the picturesque Nooksack River, with only the sounds of leaves, birds (eagles!), and then... nothing... I knew I had 'arrived' - literally! Future guests should not think of this as a 'tiny house' - 900 sq. ft.is not tiny. It is, instead, a perfect home, even if it is 'away-from-home'. Once you return to your own home you'll eagerly be searching for gaps in your calendar for a return. Now... back to MY calendar!

Wonderful retreat!

We loved our time at the guesthouse! And a fresh blanket of snow made it even more magical. This little house tucked away on the outskirts of Mount Baker is luxurious, beautifully designed and comfortably cozy all at the same time. If you are looking for a modern cabin away from it all this is your place! The space is organized efficiently and creatively and a pleasure to discover and enjoy all the comforts and details that the owners have made to make everything fit. It must have been so fun to design this place and collect items as accents to create a beautiful space! We spent a long birthday weekend lounging by the fire, reading, a little catch up on work, and simply escaping the hustle of real life. The kitchen is well equipped to whip up delicious meals with a variety of appliances if you desire. What a wonderful place to find the rhythms of rest and relaxation. It made it very easy to step in and feel at home. Very clean and well cared for. Leaf was also excellent with communications - he even met us upon arrival to guide us down the drive and quickly introduce us to the guesthouse. He was quick to respond and always welcoming and gracious. We will be back to enjoy summer season!

Absolutely lovely and comfortable cabin in GREAT location

Wow! This couldn't have been better. The cabin is absolutely lovely and SO comfortable. The combination living / dining / kitchen area is huge and surrounded by windows offering great views of the surrounding woods and field. The bedroom was also very comfortable, and we really enjoyed sleeping with the windows open and enjoying the fresh breeze! The cabin is extremely well equipped with lots more than is even listed. There were ample kitchen supplies, condiments, spices and more. There are lots of books, magazines and brochures to peruse, as well as some jigsaw puzzles and games for those rainy days. The owners even brought us a complimentary bottle of wine! Leaf (the owner) is absolutely delightful. He met us when we arrived and made it a point to stop by before we departed. He is fun and informative and we really enjoyed chatting with him. We were in regular contact via texting and he is so quick to respond. Perfect! We were about 30 minutes or so from Glacier and many of the gorgeous Mt. Baker hikes. There are a few restaurants within 10 - 15 minutes. We will definitely return to the area and t his lovely cabin. Thanks, Leaf and Louise!

Beautiful location, kind hosts, but could be cleaner

We had a lovely stay at this charming house in a truly beautiful and peaceful location. The hosts were incredibly kind and welcoming — they even surprised us with fresh raspberries from their garden, which was such a thoughtful touch. Their rescue dogs are absolutely adorable and added to the warm and homey atmosphere. However, we did notice that the house could use a more thorough cleaning. There were hairs on the bed and in several places throughout the house, which was a bit disappointing. With just a bit more attention to cleanliness, this place would be absolutely perfect.Still, we really appreciated the hospitality and the serene surroundings. With a little improvement, we would definitely consider coming back!

Beautiful guesthouse and lovely hosts

My parents and I stayed at Leaf and Louise‘s guesthouse for three nights to explore the area. The guesthouse is super clean and comfortable with a very well equipped kitchen. There was even a bottle of wine, coffee beans, tea and a number of spices and condiments to make self-catering very easy. The house is located in a nice and quiet area in easy driving distance to a supermarket as well as to restaurants, in case you don‘t want to cook yourself, a very good brewery, Bellingham and the surrounding area, Mount Baker and the Northern Cascades. Leaf and Louise are the nicest hosts you could wish for and kindly shared many tips for things to do and places to go. I would definitely come back, and I would recommend this place highly to anyone looking for accommodation in the area.

About the host

Hosted by Leaf Schumann and Louise Granger

Host profile image
We have lived adjacent to this property for 38 years. It's wonderful. Louise is a Washington native but Leaf had to return to the NW, the birthplace of his parents, after a childhood in Southern California. We retired a few years ago after careers in nursing (Louise) and school counseling (Leaf). Our two fine sons live within striking distance in Seattle and life has been very good to us. Making the guesthouse available for travelers has proven to be a lot of fun with a surprising number of guests being international travelers. We never imagined how satisfying this whole enterprise would be.

Why they chose this property

We bought it eight years ago but actually owned the property a decade earlier. This time around we had the original home removed--burned, actually, by our fire district in a practice burn--and started over.

What makes this property unique

Same benefits as exist in the whole area: quiet, secluded, ample wildlife, charm. Beavers swim up the river on occasion and we've been visited by bear and cougar. We even managed to snap a photo of both. Eagles abound and a surprising number of guests are here to photograph them during the winter salmon run. Long winter nights are made warmer with the location of a fine little brewpub up the road. Life is very good here and it's a joy to share it. A highchair and Pack 'n Play are in the closet for the use of parents of young children.
