Thank you for the review, and for leaving the cottage so clean and tidy. You are welcome back anytime!
Cosy and welcoming. Views amazing very close to a stunning beach. I personally would have liked a grab hold for getting in and out of the bath. Local shop very expensive. We had a wonderful stay.
Beautiful Crofters Cabin Overlooking the Kyle of Tongue
My husband and I loved our 5-day stay in Talmine in Sarah and David's beautifully renovated cottage. The cottage has a fantastic view out over the sea and the most gorgeous sunrises right out the window. It has a fully equipped modern kitchen, a lovely sitting room, bath with tub and hand-held shower, and two large bedrooms on the top floor, a perfect spacious place for our vacation home base. The cottage is in the perfect location to explore the northern highlands. We walked a beautiful coastal path that started at Talmine and wound along the cliffs for about 4 miles, and we took other walks at Bettyhill, Loch Hakel, and Durness The village has a shop with basic groceries and some fresh produce. We were there very early in the season, and the local hotel was not open yet, so we couldn't eat there, but we had a nice dinner at the Tongue Hotel 15 minutes away and a great Scottish breakfast at Bettyhill about a half hour away. We ate most of our meals in the cottage. You need a vehicle because public transportation is not frequently available. We fell in love with Scotland's North Coast and hope to be back for a visit with Sarah and David soon.
Das Haus ist sehr schön eingerichtet und der Blick auf den Ozean einfach wunderbar. Wir unternahmen viele Touren und haben immer was Neues Entdeckt. Wer das Wetter in Schottland liebt wurde nicht enttäuscht
Beautiful views from property, very remote location which was fine for us. Local shop 5 mins walk. And hotel/restaurant/bar 15mins drive. Cottage very cosy (small) fine for a couple and our dogs. WIFI excellent. For us not having a proper shower was a shame, but we managed. I will definitely be back to the north coast it was stunning.
A cosy little cottage with a lovely view, in a beautiful part of the world.

Spectacular
This cozy little cottage was the perfect getaway. I have always said when I retire I would like to find a little cottage in Northern Scotland overlooking the North Sea. Well, everthing about this little cottage and the surrounding area has definitely met all of my expectations of what it would be like to live in a cottage overlooking the North Sea in Northern Scotland. Relaxing and a simple way of life would be the perfect words. Thank you Sarah and hats off to the caretaker for making this stay perfect.
Thanks Again,
Darren.....

Beautiful little cottage, situated within a stunning part of the world. The cottage has everything you could ask for, a home away from home. The views are also exceptional from the cottage. The walks around the area are vast and the locals are so friendly and welcoming.

Incredible holiday to get away from it all!
What a place this is! Situated within stunning and dramatic landscape, a cottage that has everything you could want. The cottage is clean, tidy and traditional to the area with all necessary amenities and information including a well stocked shop just a few doors down. It has a relaxing feel to it with captivating views of the sea, cliffs and islands. If you're lucky, you can often see cows just wandering past the front door, minding their own business! Exploring the area is a must...we were amazed and excited to see seals, otters, red deer, golden eagle, dolphins, porpoises and the rare Scottish primrose!! Recommended places to go include Slettle, Durness, Skerray Bay, Borgie Forest, Smoo Cave, Castle Varrich and really just strolling and hiking across the stunning white sandy beaches and cliffs, all within walking distance from the cottage. This is the type of place that touches the soul and gets under your skin...you will never want to leave. Absolutely incredible and serene!

Great location for exploring the area, a well equipped and comfortable cottage.
Very nice little cottage set at the back of the village so peaceful. Close to the village shop which is handy. Some nice local walks with no need to do much driving.
Liked the Sandyford cooker which gave out warmth as well as did the cooking efficiently.
The only thing missing was the internet which, even though we might want to get away from it all, is pretty essential for dealing with the day to day issues that inevitably arise.

Requires a lot of updating and a garden overhaul so you can hang out washing or sit outside
By the photos, you can see that the cottage is an old style, but a lot of painting, upgrading and de cluttering is needed.
The garden is a complete mess and I couldn't get out through the waist high grass, to hang washing out. The front area was full of cracked paving and weeds.
The blackout blind, in the double room, didn't cover the whole of the window and had mildew on it. The tv is no bigger than a computer screen.
In this day and age, wifi needs to be provided, especially as phone signals are so poor, although there was a BT landline phone.
The duvets were 13.5 tog, ridiculous, for the summer even in the north of Scotland, lucky I brought my own thin duvet. The bedding was old and faded looking.
I own a self catering property and would be ashamed to let mine in this condition. I know some people like 'quaint and quirky' but redecoration and smartening up doesn't cost a lot.

Thanks for your review Susan, I am sorry that Cornhill fell short of your expectations. I welcome your comments and will take them into account in our plans for the cottage. I have just visited myself from North Wales and have checked that the washing line is now accessible, and we are upgrading the front garden and seating there so that guests can better enjoy the amazing sea views. Wifi is an ongoing issue at Talmine, as the telephone lines are still analogue, but we have joined the local campaign for a cable service. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

Fabulous cottage in a stunning location
A lovely well kept cottage equipped with everything you need with views that you will be hard pressed to beat. The village has a handy shop and post office, a lovely beach and nice walks and places to potter round without having to bother with the car. Tongue is only a five minute drive away and we alternated days spent locally with days visiting attractions further afield such as Smoo Cave and Duncansby Head Stacks. The flowers and wildlife were fabulous and we saw minke whale in the bay and apparently there had been a pod of orca the week before. Highly recommended!

Thank you for your helpful review. I am glad that you had a good holiday despite the problems. We are visiting the cottage next week and will investigate the issues you have raised.
Drying washing is always a challenge when poor weather prevents use of the outside washing line. We have found the using the internal drying rack in the porch, or in the kitchen over night works best.
I will provide a further update after our visit.
Best regards
Sarah

Cornhill Cottage - comfortable, spacious and a great location.
Cornhill Cottage is located on a very quiet little lane in Talmine overlooking lovely Talmine Bay with its sandy beach, harbour and great seascape views towards the Rabbit Islands.
The cottage is spacious with two upstairs bedrooms, it has a good bathroom, utility room. a comfortable sitting room and cosy kitchen/breakfast room with an oil fired Sandyford cooker (similar to an Aga) that provides background warmth as well as doing the cooking.
Out of the front of the cottage there is a nice pretty little garden to sit in specially with an early cup of tea as the sun rises.
Very close by (2 minutes walk) there is the convenience of Tom's village shop/post office which stocks everything you will need for your stay.
The location of the cottage is ideal for coastal walking without the need to get in the car. There is a lovely walk to Port Vasgo in one direction and to Skinnet Ard and Skinnet beach in the other, with beautiful views of the Kyle of Tongue and Ben Loyal in the distance.
All in all a great place to stay if you want to explore this part of Scotland.

About the host
Hosted by Sarah Bird
I grew up in Cheshire, and visited north Sutherland for holidays since i was a child. I have recently moved to live next door to Cornhill cottage, fulfilling a lifetime dream. I worked in wildlife conservation until taking redundancy during COVID. I love all things wild and natural, that's why I love northern Scotland.
Why they chose this property
I have been visiting Cornhill for over 30 years now, it is my favourite place, and I still find new experiences each time i visit! I have climbed Ben Loyal and Ben Hope many times, and know the coast very well. My interest in wildlife was stimulated there, and my dream to work in conservation definitely started there. I particularly love the wild flowers - Scottish primrose is a delight, and there are many orchids in the summer. Its also a good place to see eagles - both species! If you need to get away from it ALL this is the place!
What makes this property unique
Cornhill is special because of the clean air, the amazing - constantly changing - views of sea and mountains, the long summer days, the northern lights (if you are lucky!), and dark starry skies... The nature is just amazing, and the community is very friendly. The lack of internet can also be seen as a positive!!
