Dirty and Dated

When I arrived, the unit had not been cleaned from the last stay. Dirty towels all over the floors, no linens on the beds, dirty kitchen and bathroom. The owner did not send anyone to clean until the next and even then, the cleaner did not put out linens for the beds and said it was because out stuff was on the beds. No instructions on access to wifi in the location. Owner difficult to work with and blamed us for their shortcomings. Very outdated unit. Terrible parking situation - had to park at the bottom of the hillside and take an inconsistent shuttle up or walk 15 minutes uphill. Good location and view otherwise.

Sugar Mountain Skiing!

Loved the place but more importantly the location. We would walk over to sugar country club and ski down the hill to not have to wait in any absurd bus lines or worry about parking.

Terrific stay

Great place to stay, Ruth and the staff were both friendly and extremely helpful. The condo has a beautiful view of the slopes from the top of the mountain, the sunset viewed from the balcony is great. Close drive to sugar mountain ski resort as well as area restaurants and grandfather mountain. Can't wait to come back next year.

Great Location at an affordable price!

I recently stayed here with my family for a quick ski weekend. The condo was clean and comfortably accommodated all six of us. It's close enough to all the action in town and on the slopes to allow those on a budget to do and see what they want. All of the people at Sugar Top were very friendly, and by the end of the weekend, the shuttle drivers were like part of the family. Looking forward to another stay there!

Great Condo!

We enjoyed our stay this past weekend. Even though there isn't air conditioning, we found the condo to be comfortable with the windows opened. We loved the amenities offered. Our only suggestion is to invest in memory foam mattress toppers for the Master Bed and Sleeper Sofa. But everything else, was perfect. We will be back!

Great location - with the best views

I took my family up to the mountains for a long weekend of Tubing, White Water Rafting and Hiking. My guess is this property is used during the winter, but we loved staying in this unit during the Summer with the views, and the condo was in great shape. The temperature from where we lived was over 90 degrees and arrived to 65 degrees temps. It was awesome. It's a very welcoming environment and with a family of 5, we had ample room to enjoy our vacation. I would highly recommend this property. It's a unique and fun place to stay, while enjoying all the great mountain activities.

Excellent property

Our family of four stayed in this condo over a weekend in October and truly enjoyed our stay. The condo is in excellent condition - very clean and well furnished. Very quiet. Great location in the foothills but with a grocery store a few minutes drive away. WIFI easy to connect to and use. Very nice pool, which we had to ourselves. The parking/shuttle worked well, particularly since you’re allowed to drop off and pick up all your belongings on check-in and check-out. The owner was responsive and extremely kind to us -- thank you! Overall, we highly recommend this property!

Check in took over 3 hours!

We spend over 3 hours checking in. And one elevator did not work, making the stairs the only real alternative. Upon arrival and departure this was a hassle. Place is very out-dated. Other than that we had a good time.

Wonderful Place

We have been coming to the High Country for 20 years but never stayed in Sugartop. It is a really nice place with beautiful views. It was twenty degrees cooler than Fayetteville so it was very refreshing. Everyone was friendly. Ruth was very helpful. The pool, sauna, hot tub and fitness center was nice also. There was plenty of room for the five of us. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook whatever we wanted. Food Lion was at the bottom of the mountain so it was easy to shop for what we needed also. We enjoyed the Banner Elk 4th of July parade, touring Linville Caverns, hiking at Grandfather Mountain and swimming at Elk River Falls.

Additional Damage Charge

We had an awesome time staying at the condo and skiing. However, the check-in process to the condo does take a considerable amount of time. The only complaint that I had is after vacating the property the host added a $50 damage fee related to breaking a vase within the condo. I did confirm with all my guests that we did not notice anything broken or break anything during our stay so I reached out directly to the host to try to resolve the issue to no avail. We really had a great time at the condo so it’s just a shame about the false damage claim.

Great summer stay & bang for your buck

My wife, daughter and I stayed here for 4 days in mid July. This unit was really nice with newer soft, clean carpet, a well stocked kitchen, and amazing views from the balcony. The two main things we were looking for before booking our stay was a place with great views, and a place to escape the Florida heat (averaging a heat index of 105 degrees daily lately!). So this unit and property accomplished both of those things for us. The pool area was really nice as well, and I liked how there was two shallow sections of the pool that were somewhat divided which allowed for privacy while swimming. There were some negative aspects that I feel I should address. The bed in the master bedroom is a little rough and by far the squeakiest bed frame we have ever slept on. The kitchen is very dated, but all the appliances worked well (there was ice in the freezer upon arrival which I thought was a nice touch). Renters are not allowed to park at the actual condo itself (those spaces are reserved for the owners) and have to park about 1/5 of mile down the hill and be shuttled back up to the condo by the security. This was only a minor inconvenience since the shuttle is free and runs 24/7. There is no air conditioning in the unit, which I originally thought was because it was broken. However, it turns out that the entire building is without AC due to the fact there is very little need for one. During our July stay, the average afternoon temperature was 77 degrees and nightly was about 64 degrees, so unless you enjoy chilly naps during the afternoons, it shouldn't be an issue for you. Finally, I need to mention the internet. The resort internet is unsecured (safe?), and very slow. In addition to this, they put some kind of "third world" type block on streaming, which makes it impossible to watch Hulu, Netflix, HBO GO, Youtube, etc. I found this to be a bit ridiculous, and is the main reason why I can't give this place 5 stars. Overall, Sugar mountain is gorgeous and we had a really good stay. This is a very good option, especially in the summer when the rates are low.

Our Stay

We are not skiers but really enjoyed watching them from our balcony. It was really hard getting up the road to sugar top. There was a snow storm and it made the road really dangerous. The condo was very clean. It could use a few updates though. The stove is really outdated and we had hard time cooking on the stove top. The eyes would not stay put. The shower heads could use some updating as well. It would have been nice to have internet. My brother had some work he needed to do and had to go to the lobby to work. Overall it was a nice stay and we enjoyed our time there. The host was always available to reach and extremely nice.

PROPERTY POORLY MANAGED ON WEEKENDS

The property was nice, but it was poorly managed. On Friday the 12th hen we tried to drop off our groceries we were told to get in a long line for people who were just checking in. We kept trying to tell him that we were already checked in , and we had a tag hanging on our mirror that indicated this. But the attendant kept shouting "get in line, get in line" instead of politely telling us where to park and directing us to the shuttle. My husband finally got out of the car with all of the bags of groceries to find the shuttle on his own. I had to find my own parking spot, then hike all the way up the steep mountain road. I asked the front desk if I could speak with a manager. They gave me her number. (What kind of resort has no manager on a busy weekend???) I called and left her a a message to call me back, but she never did. My intention was to have her retrain the rude gate attendant, but obviously someone needs to retrain her first. We have skied and traveled all over and have never had such a poor resort experience. The unit owner was polite and responsive, so no fault of hers. But we will not return to Sugar Top.

Decent property for Skiing Trip

Property was in a great area & had a great view. Great place to book for skiing trip. Shuttle was very reliable never waited more than 3 mins for a shuttle to come pick us up or drop us off to the car. Listing said wifi was available but that is not true. Wifi is available in the lobby only, there is no wifi in the condo. So if you plan on booking this condo please make sure your service is good enough to work without wifi.

Great Location and view

Property was in a nice location overlooking the ski resort and close to Grandfather Mountain attraction. Overall the place is nice but needs a lot of renovation. Everything there is very outdated, but resort staff are very friendly. Taking the shuttle to and from your vehicle can be a inconvenience as well. Staying here I would recommend for a short stay.
