About this property

Villa Kallergi - Athena (640 m2) - north-western Crete with Concert Piano & Pool

Step through a 400-year-old archway and discover a private Cretan village, reserved entirely for your group. Hidden behind the walls of the historic village of Loutra, Villa Athena Kallergi is not a villa like any other: it is a centuries-old Cretan residence, born from the gradual union of six traditional houses around a fully private courtyard.

Nearly 400 years of history remain legible in the stone: arches, staggered levels, exterior staircases and independent entrances tell the story of an organic Cretan hamlet, while a careful renovation brings modern comfort without erasing what makes it unique.

Rather than being organised around interior corridors, the villa opens onto its courtyard: the independent suites are arranged around terraces at different levels, connected to one another through the outdoor spaces — an atmosphere closer to a small Cretan village or a Mediterranean riad than to a conventional holiday villa.

The property is run by the same Cretan family, who personally welcome each group of travellers.

At the far end of the courtyard, a vine over 200 years old climbs from the ground to the rooftop garden, where it still bears grapes every year between August and September — a living witness to the house's history.

On the lowest level, the pool and its lounge area form the heart of the courtyard. A few steps up, a dining terrace beneath the pergola seats twelve guests, lit in the evening by hand-woven pendant lamps. Higher still, further terraces offer lounge corners and hidden nooks, up to the rooftop solarium that crowns the whole architecture.

Inside the main living area, a fully equipped kitchen and dining space sit alongside a black 1970 Yamaha grand piano — as unexpected as it is characteristic of the house. Traditional Cretan instruments and carefully preserved architectural details connect the interiors to the island's history and culture.

The six suites are named after Greek deities and each has direct access from the courtyard rather than through an interior hallway. Poseidon features a queen-size bed and a bathroom with shower. Persephone features a queen-size bed, a bathroom with shower, and a kitchenette. Pluto offers a queen-size bed and a bathroom with shower. Athena is furnished with two twin beds and a bathroom with shower. Elia, arranged as a two-level duplex, includes a king-size bed, a kitchenette, and a private lounge and dining area. Demeter offers a queen-size bed and a bathroom with shower. All suites are fitted with Coco-Mat mattresses. The villa can accommodate up to 12 guests. A bathroom with a bathtub is also available in the house's living room.

Upon arrival, a welcome basket awaits you: organic fruit, local spirits, homemade preserves, and a chocolate cake, along with a few extra touches thoughtfully chosen for younger travellers — a simple way of welcoming you to Crete.

High walls surround the entire property, creating a surprisingly private world at the heart of the village. Palm trees rise above the courtyard, bougainvillea and Mediterranean greenery soften the stone, and the succession of staircases, terraces, and rooftops lets the property reveal itself gradually rather than all at once.

Villa Athena Kallergi is less a stay in a villa than a life lived, briefly, within a small piece of Crete: a historic residence shaped over centuries, carried forward with care into the present, designed so that its guests can come together while still keeping the independence of their own space.

I’m Dimitris, the heart behind Villa Kallergi - Athena, a dream nurtured by my family for over 25 years since we began this journey around 1999. Our story started with collaborations with travel agents before the internet transformed hospitality, leading us to pioneer platforms like Homeaway (later Vrbo and Abritel), TripAdvisor (since 2006), Airbnb (since 2010), and others. Hospitality is in our blood—my mother’s homemade jams and our warm welcome baskets filled with local delights reflect the care we pour into every stay. After decades of hands-on effort, I’m passionate about sharing our legacy while seeking ways to make this a more passive endeavor for my family. I invite you to experience the love and dedication we’ve built into this home, and I’m always delighted to hear your stories from your Cretan escape!

Why they chose this property

We chose Loutra, a serene medieval village in Rethymno Prefecture, for its timeless charm and breathtaking sea views that capture the soul of Crete. Villa Kallergi is our family heritage home and the Kallergi family has historic connections with the area and island of Crete. Nestled centrally on the island, it offers easy access to both coasts and cultural treasures, though the lack of a nearby airport adds a peaceful seclusion, perfect for those planning their summer getaway during the April-November season. This area’s rich history, with its winding streets and natural beauty, inspired us to create a retreat that blends tradition with comfort. The 400-year-old vine climbing our villa and the medieval courtyard entrance are testaments to Loutra’s allure, making it an ideal heaven for families and groups seeking an authentic Cretan experience away from the bustle.

What makes this property unique

Villa Kallergi - Athena stands apart with its 640 square meters of thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor space, crafted for 12 guests across 6 private suites—most with kitchenettes, all with bathrooms, including a loft-style master suite spanning two floors.

-** 6 bedroom suites, each with its own private entrance, making it especially unique for groups who want both togetherness and privacy. That setup is a huge plus compared to typical villas with shared corridors or common entrances.

- **Size and Capacity**: The villa is sleeping up to 12 guests, making it ideal for large groups, families, or events like weddings.
- **Location Perks**: Situated in the medieval village of Loutra, Crete, it offers sea views and proximity to beaches, enhancing its appeal for a scenic, cultural vacation.
- **Unique Appeal**: The villa is part of a historic complex (formerly five medieval houses), renovated in 2022 for a modern yet authentic Cretan experience. This blend of history and luxury is a significant value-add. In 2025, we’ve redefined luxury with a newly redesigned swimming pool area and a two-level roof terrace, offering a cozy lounge and sunbathing haven that transforms into an evening retreat with sunbeds as seating. A concert grand piano in the main lounge and a 200+ year-old vine producing grapes in August-September add cultural depth, while Cocomat hypoallergenic beds ensure restful, allergy-free sleep. Our personal touches—welcome baskets with organic fruits, local spirits, homemade jams, and goodies for kids—combined with our 25-year legacy and 4.88-5/5 reviews, create a boutique escape unlike the mass-built villas, tailored for those who value history, comfort, and heart.
