We enjoyed our stay at Bill's 'Penthouse' in Deland. The accommodations were a great value and in a good location within walking distance of main street that has many great shops and restaurants.

The Penthouse is my favorite in the classy old Victorian house with its classic hardwood floors and high ceilings. I even enjoy hearing the bells of St Peters Church across the street.
We stayed in the penthouse level, which was very nice. We would've loved to be able to open the windows, which were painted shut, but that's just how it is in most older properties. It was great being able to go out and sit on the rooftop deck. The place was well decorated with thoughtful touches like placemats, which is something you often don't find in rentals. The hosts were easy to contact, and very friendly and accommodating. It's an easy 20-minute walk to the nearest full grocery store, which was great because we took Uber from the airport and didn't have a car with us. All in all, we had a great stay.

Yes that staircase is challenging but there is also one inside in the hall that's a bit easier and straight! To get to it go in the entrance on the ground floor at the ramp. There is a hand painted sign on the door that says Penthouse and the Caribbean. The view from up there is pretty sweet though so I hope you'll come again.
Called this place home for two months. Enjoyed every minute of my stay.

There is something really nice about staying downtown in a beautiful small town. We are travelers ourselves and every time we travel we come back with a list of things that we can do to help our guests feel more at home. So glad that you enjoyed your stay and thanks for taking the time to review your stay.

Thanks we are owner operators and strive to make every stay great. Deland is a wonderful town to visit and so many things to do. We had a sky dive team stay for a competition at Sky Dive Deland one week and then a biker couple in town for Bike Week. We are also near the St John's River and one repeat guests brings his boat to go after crappy and bass. Its so fun meeting people who make their stay at the Deland Marigold and we are starting to get selfies with the stained glass butterfly popping up on the internet. So next time you're near, walk into the butterfly garden and "Get Your Wings On!"
Everything was great. I loved sitting out on the deck and drinking coffee and relaxing. Everything was really close and not hard to find. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean. Can’t wait to say again.
Good location blocks from downtown DeLand. Rental was a nice size and had everything we needed. Easy check in and check out. Owner answered two questions in a timely manner. Overall a positive experience.

It really is convenient to downtown Deland. We stay there from time to time and enjoy walking the short distance to Friday night at Artisan Alley with the farmers market and food vendors. Remember to take a picture at the "Angel Wings" and then before you leave take another with our Butterfly Wings on the grounds of the Marigold.
Husband and I stayed in the penthouse while renovations were underway at our home. Such a beautifully decorated space with every little detail taken into consideration to make you feel at home. We didn't want to leave.
We stayed in this unique old home for a music festival in Daytona. The home suited our needs very well. The owner was quick to respond to any questions I had. As other reviews mentioned, the stairs in the back are a bit narrow, so I definitively suggest taking the other entrance when bringing luggage in or out. The only drawback was the road noise when staying in the front bedroom. The bedroom in the back of the house was quieter.
This was a great place to stay. The top floor is very beautiful, and large. Lovely two bedrooms and it was great to have 2 baths. There was nothing lacking. It was nice to have a deck right off the kitchen with patio table & chairs. The location was convenient as we had business in Orange City, so very close to that. Very nice neighborhood. We walked the area. Very close to downtown DeLand.
Every piece of furniture needs to be replaced. At night the only way in is by metal spiral stairs.
The next morning as the house cleaner was knocking, we were packing up to leave. I fell walking down the handicap ramp (with no handrails) there was no first aid kit, the cleaner called the owner, other owners called him. I never even heard a "are you ok?" call from the owner. It's not "Victorian" its old!!!

We are so sorry you fell on our ramp and I can hear the frustration in your review over that accident. We do have first aid kits in every unit but being the cleaners' first day on the job, she couldn't find it. When she reached us we drove directly there but she said you were anxious to get home from the New Years eve weekend so you drove off. In hindsight I should have contacted you to see that you were truly alright so I do apologize for that. In all the years we have owned it no one has ever fallen on the ramp. But accidents to happen so to help prevent that from happening again we painted yellow and black stripes along the edges of the ramp.
It is a Victorian style home built in 1900 with the exception that the kitchen was added in 2011. Our furniture is either new or an antique so I guess your overall impression of your weekend there was colored by your fall.
There are two entrances to this apartment, one by the ramp with the ground floor hallway door, the second by the upper deck using the spiral staircase. Key lock boxes are by both doors.
This rental had everything we needed for our short week stay! Loved having 2 bedrooms and 2 bath and full kitchen with dishes and other conveniences including paper products, soaps and shampoos and small cooler. Location close to downtown, we walked several times. Only complaint is noise level of traffic on New York Avenue so close to master bedroom kept light sleeper awake.
We got to the property after a long flight and rent-a-car woes. I followed the directions of how to get to the unit and opened the door to a room full of people. We were all shocked. The owner was on site and gave us other accommodations that were more roomier and easier to access. The rooms were clean and the kitchen had anything we needed for cooking. the only things were the couches in the main unit had a odor that was like maybe someone had been smoking. A little Fabric Febreze cured that. The other was we were told we could use the laundry room in the basement. It was very scary down there and needs attention. We used the common laundry which was fine. Overall it was a nice stay, thank you.
I had a great time, everyone around the rental was very nice. The rental was very down home comfortable. The Owner Bill was very accommodating, also. Overall Great experience.
Very nice property. Close enough to walk to the local pizza place which was great.
Very good -would go again!!!

I love the location of the Deland Marigold- so close to everything in town. You can walk to all of our festivals, restaurants and Stetson as well as our local Play House- the Athens Theatre. After a play walk one more block for a great glass of wine at the Elusive Grape or dinner at any one of our hometown restaurants. Another benefit of walking through town is you get to see numerous murals, sculptures and art galleries. Find Artisan Alley on a Friday night and you'll be delighted by a farmers market with local foods and a great beer garden.

The unit was locate in walking distance from downtown. However, both sets of stairs were challenging to get up and down with bags. Some of the doors stuck. Full kitchen, but only 3 spoons and very little soap to do dishes with. Coffee maker, but no coffee. Outside deck, table and chairs were very dirty and I had to sweep and clean off before using. Master bedroom is close to the street and you hear cars all night long. The TVs are very confusing with too many direction(one set of directions were wrong). Place could be really nice, just needs an update. This really is more of a 3-star property, not luxurious at all.
Within walking distance of Stetson and downtown. Perfect location. Clean, cute, and very friendly and helpful property manager. Plenty of towels and linens. Thanks for supplying the soap and shampoo. Things we often forget. Well stocked kitchen and safe parking. Hope to stay again during future visits to DeLand!

Thank you Molly for those kind words, we too love the Marigold. When I was decorating it, we selected some pieces that were as old as the house- built in 1901! That blanket box at the foot of the bed is almost like a puzzle cube to get into it. And the "guitar" dresser in the second bedroom adds a little funk to the place.

One of the best things about the Marigold is how very close it is to Mainstreet. A nice little walk will get you to the many great restaurants and shopping and even to the Stetson campus. Also its nice to stroll along Artisan Alley on Friday nights while enjoying a glass of wine or picking up local home made items or food. It is the place to be on Friday nights and its sandwiched between Cafe DaVinci's and Persimmon Hollow's craft beer garden. The original name of deland was Persimmon Hollow before Henry Deland officially started the town.

looking forward to come back
A true home away from home...we were perfectly taken care of. In a beautiful, cosy apartment we had a perfect stay and felt greatly welcomed and totally safe. Also a great place to hang out on a lazy day. Size is perfect for two individuals, and still quite fine for three. Nice neighborhood with a stunning vegetation and gardens, to go for walk or for a morning run. Downtown Deland and restaurants in walking distance. Everyting you need is available in the apartment, from cooler and beach chairs to toaster, microwave and Wifi and and..., easy!
if we would come back? for sure!
Thanks to Bill for having us and
Special thanks to Scott for his help and care.

Thank you for great review. We strive to have everything our guests would need in a stay and we love to hear that it was useful. Since Deland is so close to famous beaches, Daytona and New Smyrna, I like to provide beach supplies to encourage people to visit them. Plus we have the St John's River so we sometimes host Fisherman. We also host Nascar fans and Bikers who come for Bike Week and Octoberfest. I hope you took a selfie with the stained glass butterfly in our butterfly garden. If you did please post on #DelandButterfly.

About Bill Watford
I am a native Floridian. There are a lot of nice cities in Florida and my two favorite small towns are Deland on the east side of the state and Cedar Key due west on the Gulf of Mexico.
I started buying houses to rent as an investment while I had a full time day job, my first in 1985 and I still own it - the Cedar House of Deland. My full time job today is managing the vacation rentals and short stay properties that I own.
I have several in Deland: The Units of the Deland Marigold, Grandma's Place, and The Cedar House. I also have two in Cedar Key: The TreeHouse and Goose Cove Cottage.
I enjoy what I do and am passionate about seeing that my guests have a great experience while staying in one of my properties.
Why they chose this property
This property is located only 4 blocks from the center of Deland, an historic town with a rich culture going back to the Mid 1800’s. It has been voted the Best Small Town in America several times. This property’s location is in a very private enclave that most people don’t even know is there with close proximity to historic downtown full of locally-owned shops and restaurants.. It’s as if you are in the quiet of the country. You can hear the bells of St Peters Cathedral across the street and even the gentle waters of their fountain. It is within walking distance of the beautiful campus of Stetson University and also only 3 miles away from the St. Johns River.
What makes this property unique
You’re in the penthouse of a 115 year old Victorian home! Inside, the apartment has two bedrooms and bathrooms, living room, and a fully equipped kitchen. Adjacent to the living room is a fully equipped laundry room. Off the kitchen is a side patio that overlooks the landscaped yard, a relaxing place for morning coffee or tea. The whole property is designed for comfort and quietness with beautiful hardwood floors and high elegant ceilings but modern kitchen with everything you'll need for a great stay.
