About this property

A delightful family farmhouse set in 17 acres of beautiful Dorset countryside.

A lovely Grade II listed farmhouse set in 17 acres of rolling countryside near the pretty town of Beaminster. Sleeps 13, with sitting room, dining room, kids playroom, Aga in the kitchen, chickens, a tree house and trampoline. 15 mins from the Jurassic coast and beaches, walking distance from the village and award winning restaurants.
The kitchen is large, with original flagstone floor, seats 8 easily with room for more tables, and has a 4 door Aga, and masses of cupboard space, this leads to a cosy kids playroom, stacked with toys, puzzles and DVDs. Hall is flagstoned and has a loo with washing and drying machines. The hall leads to the dining room. This is flagstoned with a wood burner, large fireplace, baby grand piano and dining table seats 12-14 people with room for further table. This follows onto another hall, entrance to the garden and patio area, another loo and the sitting room, which has Tv/Sky/Wifi large fireplace, woodburner and original features. There are 2 sets of stairs in the house to the first floor where there is a kids bathroom (smaller) with shower, bath and loo, a very big bathroom (bath, separate shower, and loo) 4 double rooms and one single room . Up some steep wooden steps is the attic bedroom that's split into two areas, one with two singles and then a double bed in the second half. Wantsley is a comfortable lived-in family farmhouse, not a chic hotel or rent-only house. We live here most of the year, except for August, Christmas and occasionally Easter. We often have chickens on the property, the presence of which is as much controlled by us as by how hungry the foxes are. The chickens are completely free-range so might pop up anywhere. Depending on mood and season they will provide eggs in exchange for remembering to feed them :).

I'm a jazz/cabaret singer, ex-actress and Aerialist instructor, and something of a coffee nut, so there is always very good coffee to be had here! I am married to a photographer and have two adorable boys. We have converted an old barn into an aerial silks studio and photographic studio so we now run circus and photography camps from home. We love to travel with packs on our backs to distant lands with adventure in mind, but love nothing more than walking through the beautiful Dorset countryside that we're so lucky to live in. Theatre, books and swimming are what make me tick, when time from running a busy family allows that is. We have a pretty relaxed and laissez faire attitude as befits life in the countryside.

Why they chose this property

This is just one of many similar reviews we have had:
'Charlie and Tim's farmhouse is an amazing place for a big family holiday. Everyone in our party was thrilled by the sheer amount of space, both inside and outside the house. The hosts are very generous in sharing the contents of their fabulous home and there's plenty to do in both good and bad weather. The lawn is perfect for cricket and football, the rope swings kept the kids amused and we enjoyed feeding the chickens and tracking down their eggs (rarely in the nesting box). Inside there are lots of toys and games as well as relaxing space for adults. The kitchen is incredibly well equipped with a warming aga (useful for a British summer), there's multiple bathrooms (with very soft towels) and the beds are very comfy. Despite the rather rainy weather we had a lovely few days here. Bridport, West Bay and Lyme Regis are all nearby and Beaminster is very pretty. I would thoroughly recommend this house for a memorable family holiday'

What makes this property unique

Wantsley Cottage is a stand-out holiday rental. Beautifully converted from an old barn by the owners, it's full of character. Exposed stone walls and oak beams make it a far cry from usual rental cottages. The property also benefits from access to 15 acres of private fields and woodland, perfect for kids to run wild in. Free-range chickens wander about the grounds (numbers vary depending on fox activity), there's a stream to paddle in and rope swings to keep the kids happy. Deer graze in the fields (very shy and flighty) and there's a rough nature trail through the woods for the adventurous. The local village is charming and beautiful, with a traditional butcher, baker and greengrocer, as well as some top notch restaurants, and of course a scattering of local pubs. The coast is just 15-20 minutes drive away and there is simply masses to do, from fossil hunting, to climbing, golf overlooking the sea, boat and fishing trips, donkey rides, soft-play centre, swimming pools and even a vineyard to visit. The local town of Bridport has a twice-weekly traditional market and is packed with restaurants, coffee houses, delightful cafes and has no less than three theatres. Lyme Regis with it's famous Cobb and harbour has a good swimming beach (though there a many others along the coast) masses of galleries and restaurants, and is just 20 minutes away. All of this is set in some of the most beautiful rolling countryside in the U.K.
