About this property
Middelshire - 10 Bedrooms 7.5 Bathrooms - Eastern Ontario
Enjoy our Lord of the Rings themed 5600 sq ft home with several gathering or meeting rooms. The home can accommodate up to 24 guests. We now only accept group bookings of 2 days or more. We are located near Merrickville, Ontario, in a small Hamlet called Eastons Corners.
Please note that we are NOT a waterfront cottage or an hotel/motel but a large home that's perfect for group bookings. The Rideau river is a few miles away should you be wishing to go fishing. We are a couple who enjoy sharing our lovingly decorated home. Surrounded by farms, we are in the country but close to several towns if you forgot to bring something.
This home is perfect for large family gatherings or other group activities. There are 6 Suites, each with a bathroom. One suite has 3 bedrooms. Two suites have two bedrooms, 2 suites have one bedroom and a sitting room with an additional queen bed. One suite has 2 beds (one king, one queen) in the same room. The Dragons Lair suite is actually 2 side by side bedrooms that share a bathroom from the hallway. Two other Suites (Knights Rest Suite and Reeves Realm Suite) share a private bathroom that is located between the bedrooms. There are 6 full bathrooms (one for each suite) and 2 half bathrooms. One bedroom suite (Valinor) is located on the main floor and is accessible without needing stairs. There are 14 beds, most beds are queen size, there are also 5 king and 1 twin bed.
Our large, well stocked 500 sq ft kitchen is centrally located and is often the focus of gatherings and fun. It has an electric stove/oven as well as a gas cook top in a 10 ft long island , and includes two side by side refrigerators; one with an ice maker. In addition, there are 2 other large rooms, a sun room and sitting room, just off the kitchen, and a games room upstairs for our guests to enjoy.
We provide you with everything needed to make you feel relaxed and at home. We also provide free Wi-Fi and free-to-air TV. The parking area is big enough to accommodate at least 7 guest vehicles.
Relax on our front veranda with your cup of tea or coffee and watch the the day go by or hang out on the back deck and enjoy something on the BBQ. Play a game of volleyball, or bocce or croquet or enjoy a campfire when outside; when indoors, a game of pool, darts, or crokinole, or one of the board games in the games room. We also have numerous movies (on DVD) available to watch.
Vacation rental guests enjoy total privacy in the home. There will be only one group of guests at a time. Ideal for a large group who want their own private vacation retreat. Also ideal for wedding groups, reunions or any other group activity. The owners or their replacements when they are away will always call (or ring doorbell) before entering the rented premises (the pool and hot-tub must be inspected daily to monitor sanitization and water levels). We (or our managers when we are away) live in a separate basement suite and are periodically available for assistance and information as needed.
Our indoor swimming pool is available year round (a pool heating charge applies during winter months). The 5 person hot-tub is also available year round.
Suitability: Low allergen environment. We rent to families and mature adults. Children are welcome, provided they are supervised and especially enjoy our pool; sometimes for hours on any given day. Adult (over 14 yrs old) supervision required over children when swimming, as there is no Lifeguard on duty for the pool/ hot tub facilities.
Absolutely NO SMOKING in the house.
Pets NOT ALLOWED due to allergens for other visitors with sensitivities.
PLEASE NOTE: Presently, we do not charge a cleaning fee as we expect our guests to leave Middelshire in a tidy state much as it was when your group arrived. We wash the linens, room towels and pool towels, strip and make all the beds and sweep out all the rooms. We expect that all the dishes will be washed, and all garbage removed from rooms and put in bags for disposal. Any spills or other messiness should be cleaned prior to departure.
Additionally the kitchen countertops should be wiped down and the cook tops should be left as clean as they were when you arrived.
As we must pay for each bag of garbage, we ask that our guests use the provided recycling bins to recycle anything that is not garbage.
Should you decide to rearrange the furniture during your stay, please take the time to replace things back in their original position before you leave.
Although we may authorize a small number of temporary guests, to visit for a few hours at no charge; any unauthorized 'temporary' guests that are in addition to the official guest count as stated when booking, are subject to extra guest charges; or may be asked to leave the premises. We do not count children 1 year or younger in the guest count.
We do have numerous decorative items throughout, to give it a genuine "Home" feel; most are on shelves that are higher up, but if you have numerous rambunctious children that you plan to leave the run of our home without supervision then this is probably not the place for your group.
Our home is located in Eastons Corners, Ontario. Pubs, restaurants, pizza and ice cream shop and liquor store are 10 km away in Merrickville. We are on Cty Rd 16 west of Merrickville and 15 min South East from Smiths Falls. We are also 30 mins north of Brockville.
In the countryside but within 1 hour of Ottawa / Gatineau, and 7 minutes from the lovely village of Merrickville , called Jewel of the Rideau, which is known for its charm, boutique shopping, many well attended events and its large numbers of artisans.
There are several golf courses within 20-30 min drive.
Linens and towels are provided, all you should need to bring is food for your group and your personal items.
Note: Owners live in a separate area in the basement of the premises. You will not see us unless you call us with an issue, or for us to collect the garbage or to check on the pool.
We have a small chicken coop at the back of the house; and children often enjoy visiting them. The chickens love people who bring them left over vegetable scraps .

About the host
Hosted by John Middelveen
We are a retired military couple and enjoy meeting new friends from all corners of the earth. Our skills are shared in the building of our home. One of us is more on the artistic side and the other more technical. Building the house for the most, by ourselves, we have learned to compromise with each other (sort of) to achieve something that we are both proud to share with our guests.
Why they chose this property
We're in a rural area but close to several major cities and we're close to the Rideau Canal system. We purchased this half built house and spent 2 years renovating/ completing it. It has been a learning experience also very fulfilling because it allowed us to grow and display our talents both in building and embellishing our home. We're so proud of our accomplishment that it gives us pleasure to share it with guests that we hope will become friends.
What makes this property unique
This is a fairly large house that has a comfortable feel of home to it. There are many areas that allow you to conduct different activities at the same time without interfering with each other. The long front veranda is a wonderful place to sit and watch the groups of cyclist ride by in the summer while enjoying the peace of the countryside. There are also several garden areas on the property and advice from other gardeners is always welcome.
