About this property
Purple Jawfish Beach House On Private White Sand Beach in Front of Amazing Reef!
This beachfront house is not large but has a sizeable open floor plan that is perfect for a couple on a romantic island getaway. Situated on a private beach replete with coconut bearing palms and a prevailing eastern trade wind, the Purple Jawfish Beach House has been called the best vacation rental for couples by numerous guests on other vacation rental websites. The house has recently been gut-renovated and is like new. The kitchen area, dining area, sitting/reading area and sleeping area are all well defined by unique counters, a Honduran hardwood custom bookshelf and an armoire. The kitchen features all new stainless steel appliances (no dishwasher though) and a sunken deep sink on a unique penny peninsula countertop. There are 20 feet of 4 foot high windows on the front and sides of the house (15 feet of them look directly out over the beach to the Caribbean sea and the mountains beyond). It is truly amazing to see.
There is a new deck with a swinging loveseat where a couple can watch the tiny waves gently break on the beach (the north side of the island has the bigger waves. The house is located on a rare (for Utila as it is not incredibly sandy on the shores) stretch of white sand beach in the snorkeling hotspot neighborhood of Blue Bayou, which stretches out in front of the Mesoamerican reef. The mountain range Cordillera Nombre de Dios rises up in the distance from the mainland and on most days you have a great view of the mountain peaks out over the Caribbean even though they are over 20 miles away. A quick search of Google map’s satellite will show you why we think Blue Bayou is the absolute best area for snorkeling or shore diving available for vacation renters. The reef in this area is second to none and is right in front of the house. The only thing separating you from the water is about 50 feet of white sand and a few palm trees. A few of them are mature palms which produce coconuts. To the left of the house, there are only almond trees, palm trees, and sand. To the right, the neighborhood of Blue Bayou stretches out for a few houses (it is not large at all). This is the best neighborhood on Utila for vacation rentals due to its proximity to everything you need on an island vacation. It is very quiet but still close enough to get to restaurants or bars without a Tuk-Tuk (mototaxi). The house is on a dead-end road (actually the end of the main road) where people catch boats to the south shore.
The house is perfect for people who want to dive, snorkel, get a tan on the beach, or fly-fish. All of these activities are accessible from the private beach in front of the house. It is only a short 10-minute walk to town (a bike is even quicker, you can rent them for less than $5 a day if you get them weekly) but far enough away that you can relax in peace with a cold beer or a Coco-loco (take a coconut, empty the milk, replace with rum) without doing much of anything. This is the Caribbean of Hemingway, before cruise ships and all-inclusive resorts, Purple Jawfish beach house is a real-life corona commercial and since we cannot be here all year round, you should stay at our place instead.

About the host
Hosted by James Passantino

I am a 42 year-old middle school teacher from upstate NY living in NYC for the past 10 years. I love to travel but never had the opportunity to travel out of the country until l was 23. Since then I have traveled to over 40 countries (all on a pretty tight budget) and fell in love with Central America. So much so that I met my wife in Nicaragua. We actually began dating on Utila after traveling together from her hometown (she had never left either). We both learned to dive on the island and Susy even learned to swim there.
Why they chose this property
When I saw this little spot on the beach for sale years later we took a huge risk, emptied all our savings and my retirement account, took two loans out and never looked back. NYC where we live is way too expensive to own so we live in a small rented studio apartment in Brooklyn and chose to put our money into fixing the Purple Jawfish Beach House (purple is her favorite color and the jawfish is my favorite fish, they are not purple) until we can retire there. It may not be the biggest place but it has that "it" factor. We have put our blood, sweat, hearts and souls into this house and hope you can see that when you stay here.
What makes this property unique
This house is located in front of one of the most beautiful Coral Reefs you will ever see. There are also two lagoons on the other side of the sand road that you could kayak in and see mangroves and all the different animals that live there. The reef is full of amazing animals like turtles, eagle rays, squid, ocopus, hundres of species of colorful fish and eels (there are a family of small Chain link Morays in the rock jetty in front of the house). I've even seen dolphins and nurse sharks in the water from the deck and then gone out and snorkled with them. By the way, there are yellow headed jawfish in front of the house about 150 ft out and to the left. They are awesome but shy so you have to hover over them slowly to not scare them into their burrows. .
