About this property

At the mid point of the Queen Charlotte Track and set in a 40 acre private bush reserve with stunning views down the Kenepuru Sound, this is a unique off-the-grid eco experience to treasure.
The Glam camping Luxury Yurt sleeps 4 (king size and double beds), and deluxe summerhouse sleeps two (Queen size) and there’s a cot available. Includes breakfast of organic ingredients including free range bacon & eggs, croissants and home baked breads, muesli and fruit, coffee and freshly squeezed juice. Self catering in a separate well equipped kitchen and dining summerhouse.
Get up close and personal with numerous native birds, geckos and with glow worm tours at night. Hot tub under the stars and a private beach for swimming and kayaking - a double sea kayak and bikes for guest use. Or just relax with a good book in the hammocks under the trees. There are incredible sunset views from the outdoor dining terrace with BBQ. Private outdoor hot shower with composting toilet. But most of all the peace and stillness of a remote Sounds retreat, Ngahere Hou is more than just a place to stay - its an experience!

Queen Charlotte Track Stop Over

Ngahere Hou was the perfect stop over for us while mountain biking the QC track. Ian was extremely welcoming and provided an awesome relaxing stay for us topped off with a hot tub and pizzas. Would highly recommend!

What a special experience

We just loved our stay at the yurt. What a special experience. We all slept so well and enjoyed our dinner under the stars and gorgeous breakfast. It was a steep descent from the Queen Charlotte Track but worth it. Thanks!

Natures Retreat

A lovely experience when you like to get out into nature but still want to enjoy the comfort of a real bed. An abundance of lush native bush and some rare non native species planted around the yurt snd summerhouse. Cheeky wekas help entertain you all day, watch out they really like breakfast and dinner time…. Ian was a fabulous host, he’s going above and beyond for his guests. Fresh bread and croissants every morning and a private glow worm tour at nighttime. He also kindly drove us everywhere we wanted as the road was not usable to tourists due to flooding issues earlier that year. We had a fabulous time and would happily return.

Perfect Retreat

Very impressed with the property. All of us were blown away and couldn't stop saying "WOW". The yurts have so much character & well decorated (warm and sturdy as well as we had a massive storm on our first night). Ian was a fab host, makes delicious home baked goods for breakfast, and optional pizzas (additional cost) for dinner. Area is beautiful, many private bays you can walk/bike/drive to, and a lot of great walks on the property if you wanted to stretch your legs. Would definitely recommend you stay here. You would want a rental car or to take a water taxi to a local wharf to get to this destination. It's about a 1h40m scenic drive from Picton.

Beautiful location and amazing home baked bread

Ian’s property is set in a stunning location right on the Queen Charlotte track with reviews right over the sounds. Our hosts were extremely welcoming and went out of their way to make our stay very relaxing and enjoyable. We will be back!

We are Kate Betteley and Ian HAMLIN, Kate’s Psychologist and Ian’s an artist (painter). From Wellington we now live onsite here in the Sounds. We’ve put most of the property into a QEII open space covenant so the new forest is permanently protected and we grow olives for our own oil.

Why they chose this property

We’ve been coming to the Kenepuru for our holidays for 18 years and moved here permanently in 2017 to build our dream eco house, as seen as the Pod house on Grand Designs NZ 2018.
It’s always been our wish to share our piece of paradise with others to have the experience of living in the round with the yurt and summerhouses. It’s a unique and special place to get away from it all, unwind and be inspired.

What makes this property unique

This is not your ordinary holiday Bach, it is camping with a touch of luxury and comfort. The views are breath taking and there is a very real sense of peacefulness and contact with the earth, the stars and the tides here. We know you will leave feeling refreshed and enriched by the experience.
