Camp kemankeag is an absolute gem, right in the heart of lake Rangeley

Rangeley lake is amazing and once your there it's all yours, and only to be shared with the loons and a handful of boaters from the area. Everyone we met out there were great and happy to talk about this amazing place. If your looking to really get away for some peace and quiet you won't find a better place than camp Kemankeag. The cabins where great and have everything you really need and having so many cabins available to us made it easy to step away for a minute from the other 32 of us we had there, lol. John was more than helpful and never a bother in the slightest, and if you have the chance to hang an chat a few you'll quickly learn how he loves this place and you can surly tell as you will to . Thank you for the great memories and we hope to come back again to this beautiful little slice of heaven.

Magical Kemankeag

From the moment we reserved the property, JS welcomed us and was always available. We loved that each subgroup of our family had their own house or cottage to stay in. The views of the lake and proximity were super, as was the privacy. Town was close enough to provide any necessities we needed. Everyone from 2 to 77 were very pleased with this magical place. Thank you Jonathan!!

Special Family Memory Making

Jonathan’s camp is such a special place! The location is perfect if you’re looking for a get away vacation someplace beautiful and fun for your large family or group. Jon is always available and gracious, and checks in regularly to see if you need anything. It is definitely rustic so don’t expect modern conveniences or luxurious furnishings. That said, you’ll have everything you truly need to have a fabulous time! Kitchens are very well equipped with everything from myriad kitchen tools to spices, microwave and four refrigerators. There’s lots of space to enjoy lawn games by the lake and two great docks from which to stage endless family water fun. Only cons I’d say are the remoteness as far as getting there, over two hours from the Portland airport and four hours from Boston, a little bit of an annoyance as family members from all over the country came and went during the week. And our 30 member family could definitely have used a few more bathrooms! But those were minor issues. Overall it was a wonderful family time in a special place and we made memories we will always treasure!

A magical escape to Maine

We had a wonderful time at a simply magical place called Kemankeag. We were looking for a property that would allow for space for multiple families that spanned ages 6-75. This was the perfect spot. It had plenty of space for everyone. We enjoyed swimming in the lake, sitting around a camp fire, watching sunsets, doing puzzles and most importantly, enjoying time together. There are so many spaces to curl up and read a book, relax on a hammock, catch a sunset or gaze at the stars. Jonathan was on hand to help with anything. He was so responsive from the moment I inquired until it was time to depart when our stay ended. He shared many great stories and was simply a wonderful person who made our stay extra special. We are so grateful for our time and enjoyed every minute. We hope to be back again soon.

Paradise Found

I hesitate to be honest about how much we love this place, for fear others will jump on the bandwagon and make it impossible for us to rent it again. It's perfect. My family of 25 has been meeting for a week once a year for the past 35 years, and we've always found something to complain about. Until now. The views from the cabins are stunning, there are spaces to come together or to find solitude, and endless opportunities abound to swim, boat, hike -- you name it. The accommodations are lovely and cozy with lots of attention to detail, whether to illuminate the camp's history, or to provide comfort for the guests. Maybe this wouldn't be the best fit for everyone (and I self-servedly hope it isn't), but we've found our home away from home, and will be back every year from now on if Jon will have us. I'm saving the last word for him: Jon is the perfect host, ready to assist at a moment's notice (sometimes even telepathically anticipating our needs), offer funny stories, provide a bit of history about the place, and just generally help us make the most of our precious days at Kemankeag -- now, in fact, more than a host, we consider him a friend. Thank you, Jonny! And, lastly, I must add a shoutout to Linda for the fabulous lobster/fish dinner. It was a night to remember, and a week to cherish.

Great location with plenty of space

The 6 cottages were more than enough to accommodate our large group. The kitchens were stocked with all of the pots, pans, and dishes you would ever need. The extra refrigerators came in handy too. Overall, we all enjoyed our time here and will have lifelong memories because of it.

Wonderful!

The atmosphere at this property is relaxed and informal, just right for our multi-generational family retreat. Because there are so many bedrooms, everyone could spread out and create their own private space. The kitchens are "camp-like" but in spite of that were well equipped with every pan, tool and gadget that you could possibly need. The view of Rangeley Lake and surrounding mountains was a balm for weary city-dwellers. Jon, the owner, couldn't have been more attentive. He responded immediately to any questions that we had. We've already signed up for next year!

Outstanding Maine Cabin Life!

Unbelievable location on one of Maine's most pristine lakes. Space for the entire family to recreate, relax and enjoy the serenity of Western Maine. Host was outstanding and accommodating to every need. Friendly, hospitable and outgoing, Jon exemplifies the true good nature of any New Englander. Location was unbeatable and houses were in immaculate condition; clean all around and true to the Maine experience. Would highly recommend this location for any family looking to gather and enjoy a week on the lake. We can't wait to come back!

Beautiful and perfect for any large group occasion

This camp is amazing! There is plenty of room, beds are comfortable and unlike so many VRBO rentals, it has a well stocked kitchen with plenty of basics (and then some!), enough cookware and table ware to feed the crowd the camp can accommodate. With two kitchens you can easily prepare and feed a small army! The Steins are so generous with sharing their games, books, play stuff, and the history of this lovely camp. Truly all you need are your personal items, food and drink. Jonathan was very helpful in getting us hooked up with a boat rental and is extremely quick to respond to whatever you need. Besides the lake and the views there is lots to do in and around the camp however, we were all so content we mostly stay put and enjoyed the property itself. Thank you for a delightful week, it was sad to leave! The whole family agreed it was the PERFECT place for our reunion.

Wonderful Place

Thank you Stein family for opening a portion of this beautiful camp to our "small" group of 16. We couldn't have found a more perfect setting to celebrate Dad's 87th birthday with family. The camp was clean, cozy and comfortable. The extra touches, like fresh flowers and home baked cookies made us feel so welcomed. We loved wandering from house to house, looking at family photos, old maps, and memorabilia. It reminded Dad of childhood summers spent in a cabin in Vermont. He couldn't have been more happy! We hope to return. I'm already talking with two other families about sharing this experience together, hopefully next summer!

Couldn't have been more perfect

This camp, Kemankeag, is literally right on the lake- so if swimming, sunning, boating or sitting on one of 5 porches and watching the clouds, loons, bald eagle (!), or the weather come across the lake are things you like to do on vacation , this is your spot. As the owners indicated, it is rustic but very clean with each room comfortable and colorful. The appliances aren't fancy, but do the job. We were a large group and there was plenty of places for people to find some privacy and large spaces to gather for meals or playing around. While remote and quiet, there is a town at either ends of the lake - restaurants, a movie theater, boats to rent, fishing guides to hire, book store and plenty of local farm produce to buy. Owners had left little bouquets of flowers (from their garden and local wild flowers) in each of our bedrooms; the blueberry picking up the road was terrific. It is a bit far to get to, but once there we were thrilled to have found this paradise for our large family to gather. D.K. Pittsburgh

Kemankeag on Rangeley Lake

Imagine falling asleep to the sound of loons and lapping water, and waking to a glorious pink and blue sunrise in the morning. That describes our first day at Kemankeag on Rangeley Lake. Our family immediately felt at home in the rustic and comfy houses of the Stein camp, Kemankeag. The hosts had left us a giant plate of home baked blueberry muffins and there were sweet little bouquets of fresh flowers in every bedroom. The porches all have beautiful pots of flowers. And there’s a wonderful hammock in the shade by the Lake; a perfect place for a nap. This is a great place to come to with family of all ages. The lake is literally right in front of you, and there is also plenty of open space for playing ball and recreating. With two complete kitchens, cooking for our extended clan was easy and fun. Evenings were often spent around an outdoor fire by the lake. Everything you need in the way of supplies is a short drive away in Rangeley and/or Oquossoc. And of course the kids (and adults) loved our daily trips to Pine Tree Frosty for ice cream! Now that our family has discovered Kemankeag, we hope to come back yearly. What a beautiful place to build memories! The KS and MTK families

About the host

Hosted by Jonathan Stein

Host profile image
Kemankeag is the vacation camp of a very large family and has grown over the last hundred years as the family grew. Starting as a "sport" fishing camp at the turn of the last century, houses and cottages were added as needed.

Kemankeag has never before been available to the public.

Why they chose this property

Kemankeag has been the private refuge of one family for 100 years. We are now able to share it with a few select families a year.

What makes this property unique

Kemankeag has space to spread out for a large family. With 7 cottages and 18 bedrooms, nobody feels crowded. We do not have large "bunk rooms".
