Staycation

The location was good for going to the National park. The road conditions getting to the property we okay, careful with low cars. The places itself was very cute. Check in and out was easy. There was a binder with places nearby to visit, eat, and explore.

We were happy to leave

Booked unit re location to Volcano National Park. Showed nice inside-pleasant surroundings. Bought groceries to enable cooking meals during stay. Disappointed to discover no stove. By definition a “kitchenette “ usually includes small cooktop Host blamed us us not doing “homework” re amenities finalizing comment “I don’t want you to stay because if you do you’ll give me a terrible review”. Wanted to leave but said no refund so stayed. Closer look at pics proved host right, only microwave, coffee pot, hot water kettle, toaster. Scant to say the least. No large bowl for salad, no soup spoons—used teaspoons. No space to eat on table. Ate meals on lap. One thin dish towel, no potholders to remove hot food from microwave. No ice trays—wouldn’t fit anyway. Freezer needed defrosting. No can opener to open can of tuna for hike next day. Sign next to shower says conserve water. Took 2 minutes to get hot water—we timed it. Moldy shower curtain. Spongy toilet seat smelly and unsanitary. Musty, moldy odor, dust in corners of room and under bed. Outlets not working to charge devices. Breaker bar next to TV reliable. Very cold. Space heater provided more dust than heat. A 2-star rating and a question: what’s with the Thai food ban??

Volcano hideaway w beautiful gardens

Quiet and extremely convenient to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The room was as advertised and had everything needed—plates, bowls, utensils, cleaning supplies, paper towels, small refrigerator, toaster and coffee pot. Comfortable bed and TV. Electric heater for cool mornings. Big windows to the garden area. The town had a nice laundromat and a few convenience stores w the basics. Hilo is only 40min away for bigger grocery stores and more restaurants. .

Remote and beautiful

Just don’t look for the property for the first time at night— it’s very tucked away on a rough road! But a perfect place to stay at night after visiting the volcano national park, very peaceful, clean and well appointed. Huge comfy bed! The host has some highly specific rules, but nothing we couldn’t comply with.

Amazing Stay

We loved our stay!! The drive to the location felt like an adventure in the rainforest. The property comes with a beautiful history. We enjoyed walking through the gardens and waking up surrounded by the trees. Better experience than our stay at the Volcano House! Thank you for opening up your home to us.

Very moist and not very clean

It rained the day we were supposed to arrive, and our host gave us an hour’s notice that he was denying access for that night, so we had to quickly find a place to stay. We arrived the next day, and stayed 3 nights. Everything was damp and clammy. I don’t think the unit ever dried out. Spiders and webs everywhere, but maybe that’s typical for a rain forest. We were not happy with the unit but felt we did not have alternative options since our host said he would not refund us.

Unexpected Beauty in the Rainforest

We had a wonderful stay at Jim's property. We had seen some reviews talk about the beautful gardens, but we had no idea! For plant lovers, gardeners, or simply nature lovers, this is the place for you! The property is full of old growth ohias, hapu'u ferns, and countless varieties of flowers and plants. The most special however are the numerous vireya rhododendrons! Absolutely amazing. The guest suite has everything you need for a comfortable stay, and the street is quiet and secluded, but the highlight for us was definitely the beautiful walking paths throughout the gardens. Thank you for sharing such a magical place with us Jim!

Good location, but old and musty.

Located in the rainforest near Volcanos NP. The studio had basic necessities, but not much more. Very strong musty smell and lots of rules including no Thai food allowed. Bathroom very small and shower head located about chest high. Not in the cleanest condition.

Wonderful Studio in a Garden

The location of the town of Volcano is unique. The studio was down a beautiful one lane road surrounded by lovely plants and foliage . The studio accommodation itself was just right for 2 people. It was very comfortable and well equipped. Walking through the large garden was calming and inspirational. There are easy paths through flowers , shrubs and trees, with a koi pond and seats along the way. We were very fortunate to be able to reserve this year for my birthday. Mahalo!

About the host

Hosted by Jim

Host profile image
I am a Fifth generation Island boy, who grew up on Oahu. I spent a number of my childhood summers here in Volcano prior to our family building a second home here in the Village. I now live in the home along with my two cats, Kaneboy and Lanigirl. I love the big isle and think it has so much to offer. Volcano is the best place for weary travelers to come for a day or two of relaxation.

Why they chose this property

Our property is very unique and well known in the village due to the garden. My father started planting over 35 years ago and it has turned into a beautiful place with paths, rhododendrons, native Hawaiian plants, two tea houses and a koi pond. It was our second home when I was younger and I spent many summers here in Volcano. Additionally, my Mother spent many Summers here too, as did many of the old Kamaaina families. There is a lot of history is this part of the island. Tall tales, and some not so tall.

What makes this property unique

Volcano Village lends itself to quiet, nature, friendly people and community. However we value our privacy here too, making a great place to rest for a day or two before heading home, Kona or another island.
