About this property

Monastero San Ansovino: Beautifully Renovated 12th Century Monastery

In a secluded, private location, but within walking distance of a fantastic restaurant, Monastero San Ansovino is a former 12th century Benedictine monastery in the breathtaking and tranquil hills of central Italy at the crossroads of Tuscany, Umbria and Le Marche. It has been lovingly restored into an elegant and comfortable holiday home using all original materials. Modern conveniences such as en-suite bathrooms have been incorporated. There is a good internet connection suitable for those who need to work whilst there. A large American-sized fridge, range cooker, good sized dining table and even a fire place feature in the kitchen (once the Monasteries refectory). There are several sitting rooms to ensure that everyone in your party has space to relax. Outside, the terrace has a large loggia with seating for 20 and both a bbq and wood fired oven. There is a large swimming pool for those hot days, a table tennis table, boules and 12 acres of stunning hillside grounds to meander through if you feel like a walk. The tranquil setting makes an ideal destination for family holidays, trecking and exploring. There is an excellent restaurant within walking distance, together with a further restaurant (which also serves pizza and a bar/shop (open 7 days a week) just 5 minutes drive from the house. San Ansovino lies about 4KM East of the beautiful medieval village of Apecchio which offers a wide range of services including a bank (with ATM), several supermarkets, bars, numerous excellent restaurants, a post office, chemist and a host of festivals in the Summer months. The UNESCO City of Urbino is just 40 minutes away, as is Gubbio, whilst Assisi, San Marino and the coast are within easy reach for a day trip.

About the host

Hosted by Louise Gross

Marc is a Californian who grew up North of San Francisco and Louise is English. Meeting in London they discovered a shared fondness for great food which eventually led them to Italy. They have two children, Aurelia and William who have spent many wonderful holidays at San Ansovino and the whole family love this beautiful spot.

Why they chose this property

We discovered this wonderful place on a trip to Italy with our then 2 year old daughter and fell in love with it instantly. The bell tower, the way it sits in the hills, and the way the light falls in the afternoon all tugged at our hearts. It was only later during the 4 year renovation that we became priviliged to make many local friends. We hope you love this special place as much as we do.

What makes this property unique

An ancient monastery nestling in the hills, will fresh truffles and porcinis to eat - what could be better... and all washed down with a glass of kir di San Ansovino.
