Idyllic holiday cottage set in wonderful countryside
We had an extremely restful and enjoyable week with family and would definitely return - Our Biewer Terrier had a wonderful time too. It's an ideal spot to explore West Sussex.
On arrival the main impression was the paddock, open space and marure trees. The cottage itself was good, was as expected, owner helpful. A most enjoyable stay (perhaps slightly influenced by the marvellously good weather which led to spending time sitting out in the sun although we did visit several places that we wanted to visit.
We felt welcomed to Foxglove Cottage as soon as we the very informative welcome pack. The lovely cottage is in beautiful surroundings, very clean and well equipped, so much attention to detail.
The Host, Gillie, friendly and helpful. It's very likely we'll go back again.
We were very impressed by the standard of interior design and cleanliness. What a joy! To tick the ‘luxury’ box I think the upstairs bathroom needs a power shower and some fluffy towels. Bedroom excellent with an enormous bed with a superb mattress.
The immediate location is pretty and peaceful. Had the weather been better we would have enjoyed sitting outside, and walking to the marina. The property is semi-detached and we wondered if the peacefulness of the location could be spoilt by noisy neighbours.

Thank you Linda for your kind review. We loved having you to stay in Foxglove and so many thanks for leaving the cottage in such perfect order. You are top guests.
I appreciate your comments. Our water pressure in this area is particularly low. We would need a cold water storage tank fitted in the roof for a power shower to work. A cold water storage tank is a rather outdated system and prone to freezing. One can fit an electric shower. However, the architect advised against this for safety reasons and for something more to go wrong.
Big fluffy bath towels would be nice. However, they need to go into a tumble dryer. I have a dryer but at present I am trying to manage without using it. Instead, when possible, I am relying on the wind to dry the holiday cottage towels which we wash here.
Up to now we have never had complaints regarding noisy neighbours residing in Baytree. . Generally visits are max two weeks and during visits guests are usually out and about. The four acre garden and grounds are big enough for guests to get away from one another if necessary. With the double internal sound proof doors its impossible to hear the neighbours when indoors.
A lovely comfortable, warm and well-located cottage, in beautifully quiet surroundings.
Wifi rather temperamental, and smart TV not quite as clever as it should be!
Really nice cottage in a great location. Nice walks out from the cottage and a fabulous beach within a short drive. Would definitely visit the area again and stay at this property. Gillie was very welcoming
A fantastic cottage set in a stunning location.
The cottage has everything to make it a home from home. It is very well equipped with everything you need to enjoy your stay.
We had fantastic weather when we visited and greatly enjoyed the wonderful outdoor space. Very peaceful and lovely to relax in.
Gillie is a great host. She responded promptly to any questions we had prior to our stay. Arrival arrangements were easy. There was also super information in the cottage detailing local walks, restaurants and shops.
We would definitely stay here again in the future.

Just as described but even better than the photos! Really nice cottage with everything you could wish for. Very clean with good size TV showers and bath. Beautiful garden surroundings and helpful host. Would highly recommend!
Fantastic stay in a peaceful part of the world, lots of lovely walks and short drive ( or walk if you enjoy a more lengthy wander!) to the coast! Good bus service too! Lots of nice beaches, uncommercialised and clean. So much more we want to explore so we’ll definitely be back! The cottage is beautifully looked after and Gillie is a great host who provides everything that you could need.

Thank you Maggie for such a kind review. So much appreciated. Thank you too for leaving Foxglove in such good order. We hope to see you back here soon.
Very peaceful location and well appointed cottage; beatutifully decorated and furnished with all that could be needed for a short (or longer) break. Great location for harbour and also just a few minutes from central Chichester. There were also helpful local suggestions for local eateries (of which there are plenty).

Too isolated with poor communication
As a single woman, the location was far too remote and the apartment had very poor lighting which made me feel very unsafe and frightened to return after dark. There was no mobile signal at all and wi-fi was intermittent so you couldn’t make calls of any kind which was extremely annoying as I was house hunting so missed Agents calls! It prevented me keeping in touch with family too, so increased the feeling of complete isolation.
I also had my dog with me and was not informed that he wasn’t allowed upstairs so ended up sleeping in the single bed downstairs.
I had booked 16 nights but was forced to leave after 5 as it was impossible to stay under these circumstances. I am currently awaiting a response from the Owner as I had to pay again for accommodation in a better location with internet and mobile connection.
I’m sure that it is a nice quiet place to stay in the summer when the inadequate lighting and isolated location would not be such an issue!

Debbie booked 16 nights in Foxglove. She had just left her home of 25 years and was seeking to buy a property in this area. She was obviously in an emotional state. I was very willing to help her look for a property. I have lived most of my life in this area.
Foxglove is located in Martins Lane - the middle of Birdham village. Not remote at all. Debbie could have checked the location on Google maps. At the time of her stay Martins Lane was ablaze with Christmas lights and Foxglove's outside lights were on all night. In the lane there are several ladies living on their own including myself!
Our Wifi speeds are above average and inter calls can be easily made. Mobile reception can be picked up in parts of the cottage and always in the garden.
When guests arrive with a dog, I ask if they would be kind enough not let the dog go upstairs for obvious reasons. Debbie had a very large hairy dog. She told me he did not go upstairs.
Poor Debbie. I hope she is happy in her new rental.

Beautiful cottage
We had a wonderful week at Foxglove. The living space is great, the grounds beautiful and Gillie was a wonderful host. The cottage is modern and very well equipped and our dog loved running around the huge outdoor space.
A great base for visiting the many pretty villages and beaches in the area.
I have recommended Martins Cottage it to all my friends and we will definitely be back.

About the host
Hosted by Gillie Farquhar-Thomson
My family moved to Birdham in 1947 and Martins Cottage has been in family ownership since that date. I grew up in Birdham and went to school in Chichester. My own family have also grown up here. We all love this area. We have everything! We have a wonderful sandy beach minutes away, The Chichester Harbour is just down the road and historic Chichester on our door step. To add to that we have The South Downs National Park just a 15 minute drive away. There is so much to do here and no one is ever bored.
Why they chose this property
Recently we had a small flock of sheep in our paddock. When we gave them up we decided to turn the hay and lambing barn into two semi detached luxury holiday cottages. The cottages are in a perfect situation. They sit well back from our quiet country lane, they face South West and are full of sunshine. To add to that they look out over our four acre meadoiw that is teeming with wildlife.
What makes this property unique
I can honestly say that I have never had a complaint! Our Visitor Books are full of the most wonderful reviews. Visitors on departure look so well and relaxed The cottages are extremely clean, warm, comfortable, light and sunny. You could not fail to have a wonderful time.
