Two gorgeous FIVE STAR family homes in the Historic District near everything!
Casas Estrella y Grande are two beautiful homes in the Historic District of Santa Fe less than a quarter mile apart. Casa Estrella is a gorgeous historic casita, and our other home is Casa Grande, a dramatic two-story contemporary adobe home in the heart of Santa Fe’s Historic District. This is not a compound.
Please go to the reviews of both homes, Casa Estrella VRBO #272512 and Casa Grande VRBO#844068, and read the 100+ five star reviews and "Guest comments" for each property, and you will understand the care and dedication we take in making each guest's visit the quintessential Santa Fe experience.
Casa Grande and Casa Estrella are only a 350 yard walk from one another and can be rented together, schedules permitting, for larger families and groups. The combination provides six bedrooms, six bathrooms and sleeping for 12 in six king and queen beds.
This wonderful custom designed and built contemporary Pueblo Revival adobe home has soaring 12-14' foot viga ceilings on the main floor with stunning floor to ceiling glass walls with views of the chamisa arroyo garden and the mountains to the north and west. Casa Grande is decorated with new and antique furnishings, Southwestern and Native American art, antique Japanese and African furnishings with antique Navajo rugs throughout. The main floor is finished with the traditional silky hand-troweled, diamond plaster walls, 10 skylights and wide-plank, hand-scraped antique floors. The exterior of the main house and casita was completely redone with adobe stucco in 2015. The entire property has been exceptionally well maintained. The main floor consists of the entry with powder room, the Great Room, your huge master suite, and the dining room, each with access to the wrap-around covered balcony that surrounds the rear of the casa. The kitchen is adjacent to the dining room, the breakfast nook, and the office/library. Warm yourself by one of the kiva fireplaces in the living or dining room on chilly Santa Fe nights. Enjoy the gourmet-equipped kitchen, a dining table seating ten which was handcrafted by the original owner/designer and a matching handmade center island table in the kitchen. Counter-tops are granite and slate. The master bedroom is quite grand by Santa Fe Historic District standards and has 12' ceilings and two walls of windows, and a glass door opening onto the balcony. There is a king bed, a walk-in closet and a second closet for additional space. The en suite bath has an enclosed shower and a Jacuzzi tub with a private WC. Downstairs are three bedrooms, all with queen beds. Two of the bedrooms share a Jack and Jill shower. Each has a water closet, lavatory and vanity and share the single shower. Each has ample closets and storage in the banco seating. The larger downstairs bedroom has a private entrance which opens onto its own patio. The other has a small, private cactus garden outside its window. The third downstairs bedroom has a private entrance, a shower/tub and a Pullman style kitchenette with sink, two-burner range and under-counter refrigerator. This room would be perfect for a family traveling with an Au Pair or companion/aide. It performs well as a third guest bedroom.
There are flat panel TVs in LR and bedrooms and free wifi.
All bed and bath linens are new as of April 2016. Each bed has new down and down alternative pillows and Comphy brand luxurious spa linens. The pillows and mattresses are encased in hypoallergenic covers. The main floor has central air and heat with radiant heating in the floors throughout. Each bedroom on the guest floor has its own thermostat and baseboard heating, and each bedroom has a ceiling fan. Casa Grande is 3,100 s.f. in size and sits on almost a half acre. There is one available garage space for guests and ample outdoor, off-street parking. The fully-equipped kitchen is roomy and light-filled with natural wood finishes. The kitchen leads to a ramada-shaded outdoor dining area and our extensive garden areas. There is a full-size washer/dryer in the utility area. CASA ESTRELLA Casa Estrella, a lovingly-restored historic adobe surrounded by walled gardens at the end of a private lane in the heart of Santa Fe’s Historic District is even closer to Canyon Road and the Plaza. We are pleased to be able to share our casita with discriminating, like-minded adults and are confident you will thoroughly enjoy your stay in our home. This authentic casita has been totally redone and has been filled with new and antique furnishings and stainless steel appliances in a contemporary New Mexico style. There are double-adobe walls, 9' beamed ceilings, hand-troweled, diamond plaster walls, skylights, wide-plank pine and white oak floors, and Saltillo tile throughout the casita. The casita is 1250 s.f. in size and sits on almost a quarter of an acre. Warm yourself by the kiva fireplace in the living room on chilly Santa Fe nights. Enjoy a gourmet-equipped kitchen, with a dining table seating up to six. The two lovely bedrooms include a master suite with a California King bed, en-suite dressing area and bath with heated floors, a top-of-the-line Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe mattress, and two each of down, Fibrefill and Tempurpedic pillows, and comfy spa linens. As of November 2015, all spa linens and two down pillows and two Fiberfill in each bedroom are new. There are new towels in the master bath as well. The guest bedroom has a King bed with a memory foam mattress topper, down, Fiberfill and Tempurpedic pillows (two of each). The guest bathroom is a modest shower bath suitable for one person at a time to do their daily ablutions. The fully-equipped kitchen is roomy and light-filled with Saltillo tile floors and natural wood finishes. French doors in the kitchen lead to a ramada-shaded outdoor dining area and our extensive garden areas. There is a full-size stacking washer/dryer in the utility area. Casa Estrella is filled with original signed Native American and Southwestern art and is surrounded by lovely garden areas on four sides. Original artwork fills the oasita with original paintings and signed proofs by Nocona Burgess, Stan Natchez, Malcolm Furlow, John Nieto, Frank Howell, photographic work by Lenny Foster and Abby Beck, sculpture by Bill Worrell, Rebecca Tobey, Alvin John, Sandy Graves, Paul Rhymer, Susan Harvey, Star York, Jim Epler, Earl Eder and glass work by Carol Lujan.. Relax to the sounds of our 'Valentine's' natural rock fountain or our Stone Forest millstone fountain. In the gardens, Find “Sanctuary” and'Freedom,' original sculptures by renowned artist Bill Worrell, other sculptures by Paul Rhymer, Alvin and Melvin John, and Chris Turri. The landscaping is softly illuminated for truly enchanting Santa Fe evenings and professionally maintained. The casita has DirectTV, free streaming Netflix movies through two new 40" Samsung SmartTVs, high-speed wifi, a Bose SoundWave CD player with an iPhone/iPod adapter and a DVD player. The gardens are perfect for romantic evenings for two, entertaining outdoors or the solitude a quiet garden can provide. Within the privacy of adobe and coyote walls are three garden areas. The coffee/cocktail garden is shaded by a large plum and a mature Russian olive tree. A cocktail table, seating for four, two zero-gravity lounge chairs and a chimenea with plenty of firewood are provided for our guests’ pleasure. Enjoy meals, cocktails and conversation around the dining table for six in the shade of a ramada in another area of the gardens. The front portal offers day-long shade from our own Piñon pine and refuge during Santa Fe monsoon rains and winter snow showers. In season, savor fruit from the casita’s apple, apricot, peach and plum trees or make a cobbler. In addition to these fruit trees and the Russian olive, we have a flowering cherry, a dwarf blue spruce, a Scotch Pine, pinon, and numerous aspen trees. These are all large, mature trees. There is a big cottonwood in our neighbor's garden that shades our ramada dining area in the mornings and early afternoons. The house and gardens are completely private and enclosed by adobe walls and coyote fences. Aspen trees line the drive along the casita’s outer wall. During the season, the gardens and landscaping are lush and are professionally maintained year-round. For your time indoors, the casita is cooled with remote-controlled air conditioners and heated by radiant in-floor and baseboard systems. We use perfume and dye-free Seventh Generation and Mrs. Meyers cleaning products throughout the house, the mattresses and pillows are encased in hypo-allergenic zipping covers, we use only organic products in our landscaping and engage a organic pest control company for regular, preventive treatments in our house and gardens.

Location -perfect! Walking distance to the Plaza and easy access to driving to other areas.
Rented both homes and they worked perfectly for our family of twelve. Both indoor and outdoor accommodations were excellent. We would rent again when we return with our family.

Dear Dr. W,
Thank you for your kind and generous review of our two homes. It is a joy for us to hear that our guests have enjoyed their Santa Fe vacations so much and that our houses have contributed to their overall experience.
We do hope you and your family can return to Santa Fe soon, and if you do, we hope you can stay with us again.
If there is anything in particular about our properties, either praise or suggestions for improvement, please let us know. We would also like to hear from you about restaurants, galleries, or activities you liked that we might pass on to future guests.
Warmest regards to your and your families,
Marilyn and Ed
Wow, wow, wow. If you come to Santa Fe you can’t go wrong with either of these properties (Casa Grande and Casita Estrella). Beautifully decorated, spacious and comfortable. The big house had THE best stocked kitchen I have ever seen at a vacation rental. The outside area is also amazing. Our group of 10 loved their stay. Highly recommend.
We rented 653 and 547 Garcia Street to accommodate twelve people. Both properties were excellent. Lots of privacy in the beautiful gardens. The artwork had a classic southwest touch.
The only negative was the 547 TV selection (no live ESPN which would have been bad if our rental was a weekend trip).

Perfect Santa Fe Retreat
This is a wonderful Santa Fe home located in a great neighborhood. My family spend a week in March at this terrific rental and everyone loved it. The house is configured well for a multi-generational family and is equipped with everything you need. It is bright, spacious, very clean and very well appointed. It is located close to all of Santa Fe's great places and yet the neighborhood is extremely quiet and peaceful. The owners are delightful and responsive to anything that might come up.

YIPPEE! To paraphrase Chief Dan George in the movie "Little Big Man," "You make our hearts soar like an eagle."
Alison, your family's enjoyment and appreciation of our homes gives us a precarious thrill through the times we cannot be there ourselves and provides us motivation to keep making it a better and better experience for our guests.
As we write this, our fabulous landscapers are preparing to install three blue spruce, five or six aspens and another pinon tree in the arroyo garden. If you were to visit again, you would notice these changes and new Native American art and sculpture added to our collection, and we do hope you can come again. If your party were to be smaller, you could rent either the two bedroom casita (Estrella) or the four bedroom big house (Grande).VRBO # 272512 and 800468 respectively instead of both houses as you did this year.
Please keep with you that gracious Mexican kindness: "Mi casa es su casa!" Our house is your house.
Warmest regards to you and your family,
Marilyn and Ed
We rented both homes for Thanksgiving weekend - we are a family of 10. The kitchen was so well stocked - we made an entire Thanksgiving meal. They had gadgets galore! The house is very well located - 20 min walk to Canyon Road or to town. It snowed while we were there but no issues whatsoever. The beds were very comfortable and everyone enjoyed the stay. We recommend this unequivocally for a wonderful stay in Santa Fe!

Superb setting, Spectacular Space
Casa Grande was home base for five couples, 3 staying here and 2 at Casa Estrella. Both spots are ideal independently and a great pairing if you need more than 4 bedrooms. We will definitely recomend this very comfortable and spacious home to friends. Though Canyon Road is easily walkable, you don’t have to leave Casa Grande to see much of Santa Fe’s best art. The owners have collected and documented many beautiful artworks. The gardens are also very special. Great space. Casa Estrella is equally welcoming and has absolutely spectacular gardens and outdoor relaxing areas. We will definitely choose this as our home when we return to Santa Fe as a couple or with friends.

Myra, thank you for your marvelous review of our homes in Santa Fe. We are so pleased you had such appreciation for both of them during your visit. Each is so different from the other in terms of the art, gardens, and design of their indoor and outdoor living spaces representing the two Santa Fe Styles. Estrella reveals the romantic, historic Santa Fe of the Cinco Pintores artists, and Grande immerses guests in the vibrant, contemporary art and award-winning food scene that is the Santa Fe of today much of which is within walking distance of both houses.
We would welcome your return visit(s) to SF, and as always, will be happy to offer any suggestions about new and current happenings, restaurants, galleries and adventures in and around the area.
We would hope to meet you sometime if we are in SF at the same time. Warmest regards, Marilyn and Ed
Although we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Grande and Casa Estrella, we were a bit disappointed when we discovered that this "family compound" actually consisted of two home about a quarter of a mile from each other. The only reference to this separation on the listing was the word "split" which, to me, was very misleading as I assumed "split" just meant two separate homes on the same property (which was not the case). Luckily, we were a group of women who didn't need to be all together but if a family tried to stay here, they may be surprised to know the homes are not on a "compound" as listed. Rather, they're just two homes with the same owners that happen to be within a 7-10 minute walk of each other.
That aside, both homes were immaculately clean, the beds were extremely comfortable, and the homes were both well-stocked with all the amenities we could need, including coffee and lots of towels. Pam, the property manager, was also very easy to communicate with and got back to us quickly.

Anna, I am so sorry you thought the two houses were on the same property. This is the first time that has ever happened. I can see how that wording could be easily misinterpreted. My apologies.
I have changed the wording to say "Casas Estrella y Grande are two beautiful houses a short 5 minute walk apart." That is the size of the field VRBO gives for that summary line. In the info immediately below that in our listing, we provide the details of their locations.
We are glad that you seemed to enjoy other features of our homes.
Thank you for entrusting your vacation to us.
Warm regards,
Ed and Marilyn
Our two houses were optimal for our use here in Santa Fe. The main reason was the Balloon Fiesta and the Taos Loop. The houses were very well appointed and clean and comfortable. Nice TV service and strong internet signals the entire five days. An easy and pleasant one mile stroll to the Historic Santa Fe Plaza and all the shopping you'll need. Kodu's to Historic Eastside.
Property is lovely and in desirable location. Property owners are very concerned that your needs are met and your stay is enjoyable. Yes, the houses (if you are renting both) are indeed a ten minute walk, but was no trouble for us.

Two lovely homes in Santa Fe
My guests and I had a wonderful time. We loved both Casa Grande and the Casita, and were comfortable in both. Both homes are well-appointed and included everything we could possibly want or need. The art is so interesting and well placed. The courtyards and balconies provided unlimited gathering places, and there was never a feeling of being crowded; there was always a place to get away for a phone call or just a quiet time alone. Because of the extremely high temperatures, it was sometimes tempting to just stay at home although we were there to have the entire Santa Fe experience.
We all hope to revisit Santa Fe soon and will definitely opt for these properties if they are available.

What a lovely review and thoughtful description of our two homes. You touched the essence of what we try to provide our guests, so they feel as if they were living in Santa Fe.
We are honored to have had you as guests and hope you can return soon. By visiting this time of year, you missed the flowers and trees in bloom. From late May to late October, Santa Fe and our gardens are in their full glory, but as you well know Santa Fe is fabulous anytime.
Warm regards,

Outstanding casita, fabulous location
Casa Estrella is the most wonderful casita we have rented in 15 years of visiting Santa Fe. The Gorgeous property and gardens, wonderful decorating, great kitchen, every amenity provided, interesting artwork, yet comfortable and gracious. The owners have really attended to details to make the casita feel like home, not a rental. This was our second stay at Casa Estrella and we can't wait to return next year.

WOW, most fabulous homes we have ever rented! Easy walk to Canyon Road and Plaza. Lovely gardens, art
We felt at home the moment we walked into both of these gorgeous homes (and immediately felt like locals)! These are private homes and didn't feel at all like "vacation rentals." Both houses were immaculately clean and well-maintained, beautifully decorated with antiques and original art by Native American artists you will recognize. The beds were great and the linens were scrumptious. One of our couples even bought the same bed linens when they got home.
Both homes had surprisingly large, lovely private gardens and ample parking (rarities in SF!). We could have parked two cars easily at the casita and four or more at the big house.
Casa Estrella was romantic and cozy. with connected garden areas, lush landscaping, fruit trees and two pine trees. This house had multiple outdoor living spaces surrounded by adobe walls and coyote fences. It is on a quiet, dead-end lane.
It was less than a five minute walk to the big house through this beautiful historic neighborhood.
Casa Grande, "the big house," is a large, dramatic, two story contemporary adobe on Garcia Street directly across from the Indian Arts Research Center and the School for Advanced Research. It had soaring, high vigas and plank ceilings, polished plaster walls, and the most gorgeous wide-plank antique wood floors we have ever seen. It was beautifully decorated with Navajo rugs and SW art.
The main floor living areas opened onto a wraparound covered balcony with two sets of French doors and a door to the master bedroom. The entire upper floor had wonderful easy flows between the indoor spaces and outdoor terraces. Our families could be together but with private spots to get away.
The kitchen was roomy enough for several of us to be in the kitchen at the same time. Although there were only six of us, we could have seated a small army in the open dining, breakfast nook and kitchen bar area. We had about 12 to 15 friends over for wine and cheese, and the house worked beautifully for our party.
There were large, connected flagstone patios each with dining and lounge seating. The upper terrace was shaded by a traditional ramada (read New Mexican arbor" with strings of mini-"starlights" for evening ambiance.
The lower floor of the house had three queen bedrooms two of which share a shower. This was the closest thing to a drawback this house had, but it was no problem for us.
Both had fully equipped" cooks kitchens" and both houses were air conditioned and had plenty of firewood.

About the host
Hosted by Ed Lanford
We are both auctioneers and work long hours, so when we travel, we like to do it right. We seek out upscale, interesting hotels, lodges and vacation rentals. We love fresh air, beautiful gardens, and all varieties of nature, climates and cultures and try to discover new, unique and soulful experiences in exciting places. We love good food and are experimenting cooks. We dine in the finest restaurants in each destination and particularly enjoy discovering off-the-beaten-path, hidden, local and out-of-the-way gems. We hate fast food. We are daily walkers and seek out romantic sunsets wherever we are. Marilyn loves the outdoors and is an avid reader. Ed skis, kayaks, scuba dives, and likes to fish although all fish are safe in his presence. We both like southwestern and Native American art, museums and galleries of all types.
Why they chose this property
CASA GRANDE : We own a two bedroom casita in the Eastside Historic District and wanted a bigger home with significant additional space for family, friends and guests. We found this home close by that has a short term rental permit too. Now we have a total of six bedrooms that can sleep twelve in king and queen beds within 350 yards of each other. What area other than Santa Fe offers the most varied, yet agreeable climate year around? Where could we experience the greatest intellectual and recreational stimulation? Where else in the U.S. could one find a settlement with 400 years of history blending three distinct cultures, the Native American, the Spanish Colonial and the northern European? What other place has the combined beauty of the arid northern New Mexican desert, the majesty of the Sangre de Christo, Jemez and Ortiz mountains and the lush, fertile ribbon of the Rio Grande? Where else provides the broad range of archeological sites and cultural traditions to enjoy and explore? In what other resort area can a person find any wider array of educational experiences, arts and entertainment such as Museum Hill, the Santa Fe Opera, the Lensic Performing Arts Center, the new Railyard District and a wide variety of performance venues including theatres, playhouses, and an amphitheatre. How can one compare the scope and variety of restaurants, galleries and shops of Santa Fe to any other place? What other city can match the combination of cultural choices and outdoor recreational opportunities offered by the Santa Fe area: sightseeing, snow skiing, kayaking and rafting, mountain biking, water skiing, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, archeological exploration, hot air ballooning and so on? What other city has a wonderful, 100 year-old neighborhood gourmet market and two Whole Foods Markets?
CASA GRANDE: The location is ideal and close to our casita, Casa Estrella, which can be combined with Casa Grande into one rental for a party of twelve people. It is custom-built, contemporary “Pueblo Revival" or "Santa Fe Style" adobe in the Eastside Historic District, the Camino del Monte Sol Historic District and the Garcia Historic District. It is within easy walking distance of the most important destinations along Canyon Road and the downtown plaza area. We found this casa to be immaculate, in excellent condition, beautifully furnished, very well maintained and ever so romantic. The garden areas are exceptionally generous for the area. Our Casa has high ceilings, an open floor plan with lots of space and an easy flow but with private spaces where one can get away. It has all the features and amenities one could need for a true Santa Fe getaway.
CASA ESTRELLA: We bought the very best two bedroom vacation rental on the market, and we looked at many. The location is ideal, and the combination of features offered by this casita makes it unique to the area. It is a restored original “Pueblo Revival' or 'Santa Fe Style' adobe in the Eastside Historic District, the Camino del Monte Sol Historic District and the Garcia Historic District. It is within easy walking distance of the most important destinations along Canyon Road and the downtown plaza area. We found this casita to be immaculate, in excellent condition, beautifully furnished, very well maintained and ever so romantic.
We fell in love with the gardens at first sight. Even before we went in the house, we knew this was the perfect place for us. Once inside, we found the cutest casita we had yet seen, but the private outdoor spaces are what we love most. The garden areas are exceptionally generous for the Historic District and offer four distinct areas for entertaining.
