About this property

Historic Sugar Mill Villa with Ocean Views and Infinity Pool Access

The Sugar House is a distinctive two-bedroom villa built within the original stone walls of an 18th-century circular sugar mill. Combining historic character with contemporary comfort, it offers generous interiors, tropical gardens and sweeping views across the estate and surrounding ocean.

Both spacious en-suite bedrooms feature king-size four-poster beds, comfortable sitting areas, handcrafted hardwood vanities and walk-in closets. One bathroom includes a striking circular open-air pebble shower, creating a private spa-like experience beneath the Caribbean sky.

At the heart of the villa is a fully equipped mahogany kitchen opening into a circular living and dining area beneath a dramatic high arched timber ceiling. The open-plan design, large windows and garden-facing doors allow cooling trade winds to flow naturally through the property.

Guests can relax in the gardens, enjoy the terraces and outdoor seating areas, or make use of the estate’s infinity pool. The pool may occasionally be shared with guests staying at The Old Fort when the two residences are booked separately.

The surrounding 28-acre estate is filled with palms, tropical flowers and fruit trees. Scenic trails extend through the grounds towards the rugged Atlantic coastline and the secluded beaches of Ravine Bay and Hope Bay.

The Sugar House offers a peaceful and characterful retreat for couples, families or friends seeking privacy, nature and an authentic Bequia experience.

High-speed fibre-optic internet is available throughout the villa. Housekeeping is provided several times each week, and private chefs, grocery pre-stocking, vehicle rental, taxis, additional staff and private powerboat excursions can be arranged.

Rustic Retreat

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 week stay at the Sugar House at the Old Fort Estate. The setting is gorgeous and the history is fascinating. The grounds were fun to explore, the pool delightful to swim in and read by, and the Sugar House, with its cooling breezes and beautiful views, lovely to come home to each day. The 2 suites were perfect for 2 couples. Quirin and Sarah were very helpful in advance and throughout our stay.

Thank you so much Molly and crew! It was great having you stay. You were the perfect guests and I am happy that you enjoyed your time with us at the Sugar House! I hope to be able to welcome you again and will definitely check you all out whenever I make it up to Martha's Vineyard. Give my best also again to Stever, and hope we can connect in the future! xx

The Sugar Mill is a beautifully designed, airy and pretty unique villa high up overlooking the sea and islands to the East of Bequia. Being high up it gets a very necessary cooling breeze. Bequia had suffered a long drought while we were there, so was less green than normal, but it was still lovely. Quirin was very welcoming and we could see what efforts he is making to maintain the Old Fort and the estate - quite a challenge! Car rental is pretty essential, as though the island is small, it's quite a way down to the lovely beaches and restaurants. But we very much enjoyed being up the hill by ourselves (great views also from the pool) but only 10 minutes drive to beaches etc. And when we momentarily tired of the views, the tortoises in the garden were endlessly fascinating!

I grew up in the Grenadines, primarily in the small hilltop community of Mount Pleasant on Bequia. As a child, I watched my parents and their dedicated team restore the historic ruins of The Old Fort Estate, including the original sugar mill walls that now form The Sugar House.

Their work gave me a deep appreciation for the property’s history, architecture and importance to our family.

Growing up on a small island presented unusual educational challenges. I initially studied through an American correspondence programme before travelling by ferry to neighbouring St. Vincent to complete my A-levels.

At 18, I moved to Europe and began a hospitality apprenticeship at the Kempinski Hotel Four Seasons in Munich. I later worked in food and beverage at the Hilton Amsterdam before moving to London, where I completed a degree in International Marketing and Hospitality Management at London Metropolitan University.

I returned to the Grenadines and became Director of The Old Fort in 2005. Today, I divide my time between Bequia and London, where I spend part of the year with my young daughter.

My international hospitality experience, lifelong connection to Bequia and extensive knowledge of the Grenadines allow me to help guests enjoy much more than the villa alone. Whether arranging a chef, boat excursion, island transport or recommending a favourite beach or restaurant, I enjoy helping each group make the most of its stay.

I built The Sugar House within the derelict stone walls surrounding the small wooden cottage where I grew up. It reflects my family’s decades-long commitment to preserving the history and character of the estate while creating a distinctive and comfortable place for guests to experience Bequia.

Why they chose this property

Mount Pleasant is one of Bequia’s most peaceful and scenic areas. Its elevated position provides cooling trade winds and panoramic views across both the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, while Port Elizabeth, Princess Margaret Beach, Lower Bay and the island’s restaurants remain only a short drive away.

The Sugar House stands within the original walls of an 18th-century circular sugar mill, surrounded by approximately 28 acres of tropical hillsides, gardens and walking trails extending towards the Atlantic coastline.

My parents first arrived on Bequia on Christmas Eve 1978 and spent decades restoring and caring for the property. Through those years, our family developed deep local knowledge and long-standing relationships throughout the island.

Bequia remains one of the Caribbean’s most distinctive and unspoilt islands. It offers beautiful beaches, excellent sailing and boating, independent restaurants, a welcoming community and a relaxed atmosphere that has largely escaped mass tourism.

The setting allows guests to enjoy genuine peace and privacy while remaining within easy reach of everything that makes Bequia special.

What makes this property unique

The Sugar House combines historic architecture, natural beauty and modern comfort in a setting unlike a conventional Caribbean villa.

The residence is built within the original circular stone walls of an 18th-century sugar mill. Its curved architecture, high timber ceiling, handcrafted hardwood details and open-plan layout preserve the character of the historic structure while creating a spacious and comfortable home.

Each bedroom has its own sitting area, private bathroom and direct connection to the gardens. The open-air pebble shower is particularly memorable, allowing guests to enjoy the tropical surroundings in complete privacy.

The villa is surrounded by palms, fruit trees, tropical flowers and local birdlife. Walking trails extend through the wider estate towards the rugged coastline and the secluded beaches of Ravine Bay and Hope Bay.

Recent archaeological discoveries within the grounds have revealed additional sections of the historic estate, adding another layer to the property’s evolving story.

The Sugar House can also be adapted to suit different stays. Private chefs, additional accommodation, transport, staff and boat excursions can be arranged according to the needs of the group.

Most importantly, the villa offers guests an authentic connection to Bequia—its history, landscape, community and unhurried rhythm of life.
