Region: Cornwall’s visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain’s premier holiday destinations.
Town: Just a short drive from the pretty south Cornish coast, St Austell is one of the largest towns in Cornwall, home to a range of independent and well-known shops, an undercover shopping centre and a Local Produce Market, which takes place every Friday and Saturday. There is also a range of excellent restaurants, cafes and inns – from traditional country pubs to 2 AA rosette fine dining. Just outside St Austell is the iconic Eden Project, as well as the award-winning Lost Gardens of Heligan, Kidzworld, and the Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum. There are some beautiful beaches in this area, too – many with good kayaking conditions – and many miles of coastal footpath to explore. The mainly traffic-free Pentewan Cycle Trail runs from St Austell to Pentewan; here you can enjoy a bite to eat at the village pub or beach burger shack before making your return journey to St Austell. One of St Austell’s main events is the Torchlight Carnival which takes place each November – and of course, the World Pasty Championships, which are held at the Eden Project each March!
