Silver Street Studio - Creative, Eclectic, Artistic, Retreat: Perfect getaway!
Welcome to the Silver Street Studio; the most perfect place to rest and relax in Fremantle.
Firstly, putting health and safety at the forefront, we would like to reassure all that we have introduced enhanced cleaning protocols (ECP) when preparing the Studio for you, our guests. As usual, all our linen is washed at a professional laundry. We have also introduced a four night minimum stay period including a 72 hour space between bookings. We thank you for your understanding.
As a summer and winter retreat, the Studio is primarily an adult space, although we do have facilities for a small baby. It is spacious, stylish, eclectic and very comfortable ... It is somewhere beyond expectation; a haven for those who love art, travel, history, and being spoilt. This private, two story residence is so close to the heart of South Fremantle's culinary hub- yet is in a quiet, leafy and secluded location. Behind limestone walls and within a lush courtyard garden, the Studio is the romantic's dream and has an ambient charm which is hard to beat. It is the perfect place in which to relax, escape the pressures of contemporary living, whilst being within instant reach of all facilities, South Beach and everything Fremantle has on offer.
Originally envisaged and constructed as artists' studios, then a gallery, for a sculptor and ceramicist, 'Silver Street Studio' has been owned, for the last twenty-eight years, by another artist and her geologist husband. Today, the studios have been tastefully converted into a wonderfully creative and eclectic residence which shares the couple's own love of art and travel. Constructed from large local limestone blocks rescued from a former Fremantle church, magnificent one hundred year old timbers from 'Rob's' (South Fremantle) Jetty, the Wool Stores and other fascinating items of memorabilia, including a turret from the old Swanbourne Hospital, the building speaks to local history, contemporary art, interior design and old world charm.
On arrival, our guests enter the courtyard garden through a small 'hobbit' door within a large 'medieval' gate. In summer, this area is shaded by plane trees, a poinciana, an olive tree and a grape vine. This alfresco garden makes an ideal setting for a private breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or romantic evening BBQ.
Huge recycled, glass, sliding doors connect this leafy outdoor area to the open-plan, downstairs, living space. There is a well equipped kitchen, a dining area which looks onto the garden, and a very comfortable lounge. Beautiful rugs, art works and interior furnishings, together with the idiosyncratic architectural style create a warm, eclectic, environment to be enjoyed.
The upper Studio level, originally ceramic studios, is now reached internally via an industrial steel staircase, designed by Troppo Architects. The bedroom has a very comfortable queen size bed, supplied with quality bedding and French linen sheets. A light-filled mezzanine walkway connects this space to the bathroom/dressing room which opens onto the north facing balcony. Surrounded by trees, this provides the perfect spot for a private bath 'en plain air' or under the stars. The former kiln room, to the left of the balcony, has now been converted into a peaceful reading/meditation space.
The downstairs store room houses two bikes for our guests to use around Fremantle and for exploring the coastal heathlands.
On arrival we give you a bottle of fine Vasse Felix 'red' and Margaret River cheeses, plus a delicious hamper for your first morning and beyond....The hamper contains locally made jams, WA roasted coffee beans, gourmet teas, home-made muesli, free range eggs and freshly baked bread from our local bakery at the end of the road, and more. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements and we will adjust the hamper accordingly.
An extra single bed can be made available on request. We also have a cot for a small baby. However, although spacious, the building is fairly open plan and we primarily see the Silver Street Studio as a romantic retreat for couples. Please note, the accommodation is not suitable for toddlers, or the frail. It is a unique, wonderfully eclectic, architecturally rich, space that truly rewards those with creative spirit who want something beyond, and quite different from 'the norm'.
We are in an enviable location near great cafés and restaurants , a health food shop, a gourmet super market, various food outlets, boutique shops, a health spa and all other facilities. We are just two hundred metres from the Yacht Club, Fishing Boat Harbour and a short walk from both South Beach and Central Fremantle.
You won't need a car to travel around town. Everything is walkable. However, if you choose not to walk or take the bikes, the local bus service runs regularly from a nearby stop. It runs through town stopping at the railway station for those wishing to travel into the centre of Perth. But why not take a picnic, follow the many cycle tracks to quiet beaches along the coastal heath-lands!
Fremantle is a wonderful holiday destination: Our visitors can enjoy beach life and a range of available water sports. As well as having a vibrant café culture, there are art galleries, specialty shops and many historical attractions to enjoy. These include the WA Maritime Museum, The Shipwreck Gallery, Fishing Boat Harbour, the Round House, Bather's Beach Art Precinct, the World Heritage listed Fremantle Jail with its convict built underground canal system, Fremantle Markets, The Fremantle Arts Centre (the former convict built asylum) and our recently heritage listed 'West End'. A wide range of day trips are available and regular ferries leave for Rottnest Island. Whale watching is a must. All can easily be booked on line and information gathered through the local Tourist Office.
Fremantle offers a wide range of eateries and evening entertainments but you can of course, just sit at 'home', listen to music, watch TV/download a DVD, play chess or find a really good 'read' from our excellent selection of books - and relax!
We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Thanks so much Tom, enjoy the rest of your Australian adventure!
We were greeted by Judy on arrival, with a welcome basket of wine, cheeses, etc. The location is perfect for an active couple. We used the bikes that are part of the studio rental to get to great fish stores, wine stores, butchers and grocery stores all within about 5 minutes. More importantly South Beach is also 5 minutes by bike

We’ve just enjoyed a 5 day stay at Silver St Studio, Fremantle. Judy is a warm and hospitable host, and her accomodation is an aesthetic delight. The bed is comfy, every cooking utensil imaginable is present, her welcome pack is enormous and indicative of the care she takes in making guests feel comfortable. Great location. Great nearby coffee. Won’t say too much more as I’d like to keep this place secret! Totally recommend.

Our mini honeymoon
a quirky and cosy studio nestled away through a little hobbit door was perfect for our mini honeymoon. So many nooks and crannies to explore. We especially loved how the bed was situated and the outdoor bath on the balcony gave it a very romantic feel. The breakfast hamper and wine was a real treat and it was a bonus to have bikes available to ride around south fremantle. A three night stay just wasn't enough so we will be booking this studio again on our wedding anniversary.

Our stay at Silver St Studio was superb! Judy went above and beyond to make our stay so special. From the moment we arrived to the incredible welcome basket, combined with the ambience of the studio and proximity to fabulous cafes, restaurants and shops, we felt like we were in a dream. Our stay was beyond expectations. Extremely comfy bed, a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, everything you’ll need set amongst abundant creativity. An artist’s dream stay!
The studio is so cosy, you’ll have to drag yourself away. Within walking distance of sightseeing attractions, museums and restaurants. What more could you ask for?
Highly recommend!

Original, quirky, mystical, wonderful.
My husband and I along with our teenage daughter had a fabulous four nights at Silver Street and felt like we had stepped back in time in Paris or London. We were made to feel so welcome with the studio warm and cosy upon arrival, assistance with our luggage, a bottle of wine, chocolates and an enviable hamper of breakfast provisions including gluten free muesli, juice, fresh delicious fresh eggs, bacon, fresh fruits and bread. Although quirky there is still all the modern conveniences you might require. Not to mention the location just a stone's throw from great local cafes and within comfortable walking distance to the markets. We would love to come back again.....many thanks!

We had a blissful 5 days at Silver Street Studio! Judy was the perfect host and met us on arrival to show us all the studio has to offer including outdoor secluded bath, meditation room, bikes for guest use, and other relaxing nooks and crannies! The “breakfast basket”was full of lots of fabulous food and the cakes for afternoon tea were a welcome sight after our journey with a cup of tea! The studio has lots of fascinating pieces of art, books and curios! My fave was the secluded walled garden through the hobbit door! I could “retreat” here for a year! South Freo is a must visit suburb for food, bars and beautiful varied shops not to mention the beautiful beaches! Highly recommend and We will return!

Thank you for your lovely review. It was so nice to meet you both. It was great that you were able to really relax in the Studio environs whilst enjoying all things South Fremantle. We look forward to seeing you again.
Nice historical building & location but not for long stays .
We stayed for 2 weeks which was too long for this type of rental . No dishwasher , no air conditioner in the bedroom only in the bathroom/ study where we set up their large fan to move cooler air to the other side of the upper level . We would have opened the windows to help airflow but there are no screens to keep the bugs out . All in all we loved the history but it needs to be set up a little differently , which could easily be achieved, and still keep its history. Great hosts & location. A huge welcome basket of wine , fruit, nuts, etc along with eggs , bacon , bread & milk , in the fridge , was so nice .

We used this property for our wedding staycation. Amazing location to get ready, perfect spot for the night of the wedding, and wonderful hosts. I would highly recommend this space for anyone looking for a little slice of heaven.
We absolutely loved our stay at Silver Street Studio. The studio and gardens are very unique. We spent our stay browsing through the many books and looking at all the amazing art and antiques. No phones or technology needed.
The best part of our stay was the huge food hamper of quality local products. Judy was a lovely host and quick to respond to our enquires. Looking forward to staying again for our wedding anniversary.

Hands down best place to stay in Perth
As soon as we entered through the enchanted hobbit door we knew this was the place for us! We chose to stay at silver street studios for our wedding. It was magical and relaxing which was really important to me during the stressful getting ready hours. Our wedding photos are amazing and the subsequent nights stay was romantic and peaceful, you can truly forget about the outside world while you are here but at the same time are so close to the cafes, shops and restaurants that south Fremantle has to offer. Judy and Hugh are everything you could ask for in a host and more! We received a gorgeous hamper upon arrival which made us feel extra special. 6 stars!

Warm, inviting and an eclectic mix to make you feel at home. The host was very accommodating and provided a beautiful hamper on arrival and checked on us during our stay. About the host
Hosted by Judy Durey
I have a professional back ground in the arts. I love living in Fremantle. There is a great sense of community here, new things happening daily and cultural festivals all year round.
I grew up in the UK, lived in Africa for 8 years before moving to Perth via Tenant Creek with my husband, a geologist. We lived as a family on a 'bush block' in the Perth Hills before settling in South Fremantle by the sea.
Why they chose this property
The Silver Street Studio is a unique South Fremantle icon built by a local sculptor between the late 70s - early 80s. Architecturally very interesting; the building is constructed from local limestone and wood from the historic 'woolstores' and Rob's jetty in South Fremantle. The turret was rescued from the old Swanbourne Hospital. The interior decor is warm and eclectic and incorporates many items of memorabilia; a collection prompted by our love of art and travel. In fact, every object tells a story which we are happy to share...
What makes this property unique
The Silver Street Studio is quiet, has a lovely ambience, is very private and is in a fantastic location. Hidden behind high limestone walls, we are, in fact, close to everything. At the end of our little street, there are great cafés and restaurants, fresh food outlets, boutiques, a health spa and you stay at home, there is much to make you feel comfortable...
