About this property
Banana Bach- Whole House- 6 guests- One price!
Known to locals as the Banana Bach, this classic Kiwi beach bach sits directly across the road from Oruaiti Beach in beautiful Waihau Bay, offering stunning sea views and the ultimate East Coast escape. This relaxed, family-friendly holiday home is all about location, simplicity, and the nostalgic charm of a traditional Kiwi bach.
This original 1960s bach has all living areas upstairs. As you walk up to the entrance, you’re welcomed by a spacious deck — the perfect spot for afternoon BBQs, soaking up the sunshine, and enjoying uninterrupted ocean views. From here, you step into the open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area. The kitchen remains true to its era, simple and original, with all the basic essentials needed for a comfortable beach holiday. There is also a TV in the lounge for relaxed evenings indoors.
The home comfortably sleeps up to six guests across three bedrooms, with 2 double beds and 1 bunk bed (double on the bottom and single on the top). The bathroom includes a shower, toilet, and basin. An external laundry provides a washing machine and dryer.
The large section offers plenty of room for multiple boats and trailers, making it an ideal base for fishing enthusiasts. Waihau Bay is famous for its exceptional fishing, with fantastic inshore fishing year-round and excellent game fishing from December through to August.
Directly across the road, Oruaiti Beach is a safe swimming beach for families and the perfect place to enjoy all your favourite beach activities. Quiet, remote, and incredibly special, Waihau Bay is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life while experiencing the beauty of New Zealand’s East Coast.
Please note:
The bach is currently being renovated, so it may present differently from the photos shown. This is a genuine original 1960s bach and is best suited to fishermen and guests who are comfortable with simple, basic accommodation. The home is older and in need of ongoing renovation, and previous guest reviews reflect this. Waihau Bay has Vodafone mobile coverage only — there is no Spark cellphone service available. Waihau Bay is a remote destination, located approximately 1.5 hours from Opotiki, so a car is essential. Guests will need to cross the road/state highway to access the beach.
Waihau Bay is one of New Zealand’s best fishing destinations, known for its incredible coastline, peaceful atmosphere, and family-friendly beaches. The area has one small local shop/café, dining available at Waihau Bay Lodge, and during fishing tournament season, meals can also be enjoyed at the Waihau Bay Fishing Club.
Opotiki District Council operates a zero-waste policy. Guests are required to remove their rubbish at the conclusion of their stay and drop off at the Resource Recovery Centre, Copenhagen Road, Te Kaha or 38 Wellington Street, Opotiki.
Damage Deposit (Pre-Authorisation Hold) To ensure coverage for any incidental damages or additional costs during your stay, Bush to Bay Holiday Stays requires a $250 pre-authorisation hold on your credit card, which will be taken two days prior to check-in. This is not an actual charge. The funds are simply reserved and will be released after check-out, provided the property is left in good condition and no additional charges apply. Release times may vary depending on your bank’s processing time. If the pre-authorisation cannot be successfully completed prior to check-in, the reservation may be cancelled in accordance with our booking terms and no refund will be issued.

Great location, kids played on the beach all day and the house worked great for us. Waihau Bay Hotel was good for pub food too. Only feedback is doors on the bedrooms would help as we had to retreat to our bedroom early each night so as not to wake the kids.
Beautiful peaceful location, bach was perfect for what we wanted. The only downside was that the TV didn't work, it would have been useful to have this going to help us keep updated about the storm ,but otherwise everything was great.Unfortunately we had to leave a day early due to the incoming bad weather, but we were grateful for Erins advice regarding this. We would love to return sometime!
We had an amazing trip in Waihau bay, the view from the deck is just awesome. Literally a few steps from the beach.
Classic kiwi bach with everything that you need for your holidays. Plenty of space for boats and cars.
Will definitely come back again and again.
Amazing fishing, amazing location, great crash pad for those wanting a place at the end of a days fishing. Nothing flash, but functional, clean and affordable.

Thanks Ben, you've summed the property up perfectly! Glad you were successful with your fishing.
This property is a real bach. It has a great deck and one of the best views you can imagine. Across the road is a beautiful safe swimming beach with rocks at the end of the bay. Magic!
Host was great and had fantastic communication. The view from the deck was picture perfect and loved how close to the beach it was. Handy for a walk, swim or fish. Unfortunately the weather for us wasn’t the best for a couple of days and with no wifi and only one ph able to get reception a few of the guests became restless. It would be helpful to recommend guests bring their own dvds as we couldn’t get the tv to go (no aerial?!). I also would have assumed being a well known (and very remote) spot for fishermen that there be a larger freezer available for bait/fish, esp if staying for a length of time.
Another enjoyable stay at the bach. Couple of notes - yep the lawns are boggy and whoever left before our arrival must not have used the concrete much. Also of note is that there is no longer a bbq at the bach, even though it is mentioned in the communications.
Overall an awesome spot and well laid out.
Cheers
Property was as depicted in the listing.
We didn’t rate the bach as comfortable as the beds were uncomfortable and the lounge furniture was also not comfortable. Would recommend a new mattress on the master bedroom bed as there is serious roll together making it a very uncomfortable sleep for 2
Property was all that was implied, though was surprised that the bedrooms had no doors. Unfortunately due to the severe weather of Cyclone Cabriel the section was extremely wet which created problems parking the boat and van.
Was an excellent break away

Fishing trip
Bach is as advertised…under renovation.
If like us you are using it as a fishing base it serves the purpose of providing a bed and shower after a day on the water.
Was missing some basic essentials like a decent clean frypan and there was no gas for BBQ and being picky no tea towels, salt and pepper or ability to easily cook a meal for 3 blokes.
Wouldn’t recommend for a romantic getaway or people freaked out by spiders and cockroaches.
Handy location for boat launching at Waihau Bay. Great on-site parking for up to 2 boats.
Very well appointed Bach. Had all the basics and comfortable beds except the slat bed that creaked every time you moved. Part way through a tidy up, but is a tidy good Ol Kiwi Bach. Most likely needing a debugging spray/pest control for spiders and cockroach. Only a few cockroachs but some people just don't like them and where there is a few there is a lot hiding in those warm dark spaces.
Overall a 7 out of 10.
