Steps to the Clouds · Cloud Loft Family Suite is a private upstairs loft family suite in Mellons Bay, set in a quiet, safe residential street just a short walk from Mellons Bay beach and Howick village. Guests enjoy the peaceful neighbourhood, sea breeze and birdsong in the morning, while still being close to cafés, shops, supermarkets and bus routes – it feels like a local hideaway rather than a busy city stay.
The suite occupies the entire upper level of the house and has the feel of a small boutique apartment. You have your own lounge, a bedroom with a king-size bed, a cozy skylight single room and a private bathroom on the same level. The lounge is arranged as a comfortable living space with sofa, TV, reading lamp and a beautiful antique burr-walnut cabinet that gives the room a warm, characterful feel. Beside it is a small travel / work desk with New Zealand guidebooks and maps – a handy spot to plan road trips, study or catch up on emails.
Next to the lounge is a compact tea & snack corner with fridge, microwave, kettle, basic tableware and a small complimentary snack box, ideal for simple breakfasts and light bites. This listing does not include a full kitchen. For stays of 5 nights or longer, guests who need to cook can message me before booking and we can discuss limited shared use of the downstairs family kitchen.
Off-street parking is available on the property, and access to the suite is via the back garden and external stairs, so you can come and go with good privacy and enjoy a calm, comfortable base in Mellons Bay.

About the host
Hosted by Steve
I’ve been living in the Howick / Mellons Bay area for many years and I still smile every time I walk down to the beach. It’s quiet, safe and full of light – the kind of neighbourhood where you actually hear birds in the morning. I created the Little SeaView Studio because I wanted to share this side of east Auckland with guests who prefer a homely, independent base rather than a busy hotel.
The guest suite is the entire upstairs level of my home, with its own access from the garden. Once you go up the stairs, the space is completely private – your own bedrooms, lounge and bathroom. Guests often tell me it feels like a small apartment: close enough to the host if they need anything, but with plenty of space to breathe and relax.
One of the things people enjoy most is being able to live like at home. You’re welcome to use the kitchen and dining room freely – cook simple dinners, make breakfast, or sit down together after a day out. For families, especially those on study trips, this makes a big difference: children can keep their routines, parents can prepare the food they like, and everyone still has a quiet private floor to retreat to.
As a host, I’m friendly and happy to help – whether it’s tips about beaches, walks and local cafés, or practical things like transport and shopping. At the same time, I respect that many guests value their own space and quiet time. You can choose how much you want to interact: some guests enjoy chatting and sharing travel stories, others prefer a low-key stay. Either way, my goal is the same – that you feel safe, comfortable and genuinely at home while you are here in Mellons Bay.

Why they chose this property
I chose Mellons Bay because it has a rare mix of sea, village and neighbourhood warmth that’s hard to find in a big city. In just a few minutes you can walk from the house down to the beach, watch the tide come in and out, and look across the water towards Waiheke and the islands. Early in the morning you hear birds more than traffic, and in the evening the light over the bay is always changing.
At the same time, Howick village is just up the road – a real local centre with cafés, bakeries, restaurants, supermarkets and the weekend market. I love that guests can grab a coffee, pick up fresh food, talk to locals, and then be back at the studio in a few minutes on foot. It feels very safe and family-friendly, with good schools and parks nearby, but still easy to reach other parts of Auckland by car.
What I enjoy most about this area is the rhythm of daily life: walking to the beach, watching kids play at the park, wandering through the village, and then coming home to a quiet street. It’s a place where you can slow down, breathe, and get a genuine taste of everyday life in east Auckland – not just the tourist spots.

What makes this property unique
What makes this property unique is that it gives you the best of both worlds – the privacy of your own upstairs apartment and the warmth and practicality of a real home downstairs. Guests have the entire upper level to themselves (bedrooms, lounge and bathroom) with their own internal entrance, so it feels quiet and independent, not like a typical shared house.
At the same time, you are welcome to use the full kitchen and dining room freely, which is rare for many guest suites. Families can cook proper meals, children can keep their normal routines, and long-stay guests don’t have to live on takeaway food. Add the small sea view, the short walk to the beach and Howick village, and the calm residential setting, and it becomes a place where you can truly settle in – not just sleep for a night.
