The town developed around textiles, the railway, ironworks, coal mining and afforestation and this attractive settlement is dominated by the attractive Kirk of the Covenant, which is located at the top of the village.

Dalmellington is 15 miles east Ayr and Alloway which is the location of Burns Cottage and the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. Heads of Ayr farm park is 16 miles away catering for the younger members of the family and the beautiful fishing port of Dunure which has an excellent restaurant.
