The Old Counting House

Brand new to Finest Retreats for 2024, welcome to The Old Counting House where you can enjoy spectacular views of the historic Gweek Classic Boatyard on the Helford River in Cornwall.

The Grade II listed former accounting house has been recently renovated boasting spacious and luxurious accommodation. Meticulously adorned with tasteful, calming colour palettes and exceptional furnishings, showcasing original features, antiques, and ornate fireplaces. The building dating back from the mid 18th Century once housed the customs office for the Gweek Classic Boatyard, and later became know as the “Counting House”.

The ground floor welcomes guests with an entrance hall leading to upper floors. The dining area on this level includes a sizable dining table for 8 guests. The spacious living room features comfortable seating, large smart TV, Wi-Fi and stunning views of the Gweek Classic Boatyard and beyond. A private courtyard leads from the living room, offering an outdoor space with hot tub ideal for summer months. Along with the well-appointed kitchen, which offers all amenities for an easy self-catered stay, with additional breakfast table.

The Old Counting House rooms are spacious, inviting, light and airy. The renovations are in keeping with its character, and a nod to its previous history. Ascending to the first floor, there's four spacious bedrooms, two superking with en-suite luxury shower rooms, a further king size and fourth large single room which share a family bathroom.

Ample off-road parking is available on a spacious driveway, and the village of Gweek offers convenient local amenities, including a pub and a shop, as well as numerous scenic walks to explore. This property serves as a luxurious and ideal base for couples, friends, and families looking to discover the charm of Cornwall and the broader region of the Lizard Peninsula.

With its location right on the Gweek Classic Boatyard, you can bring along your boat, canoe or paddleboard for use during your stay on the beautiful Helford River. The property has a slipway where you can launch free of charge, along with some mooring options which can be discussed with the yard office. Gweek is very tidal, and launching can take place two hours either side of hightide, with a maximum length of boat at 24 ft. I honestly can’t even put into words just how incredible of a property the Old Counting House is. As Cornish natives, we have often visited the Lizard and surrounding area over the years, and I simply cannot think of a more perfect location to call “home” whilst enjoying my favourite place on earth! The building itself is gorgeous, the decor/ fit and finish is absolutely stunning and suits it PERFECTLY, the location on the boatyard is the epitome of cosy and the place was immaculately clean upon arrival. The cream tea hamper (plus other freebies) waiting for us in the kitchen was a massive bonus as well! The ability for this property to provide such an immense amount of space, whilst still retaining that warm and cosy vibe that you want in a place like Gweek is seriously impressive, and I cannot praise the owners enough for achieving this to such a great extent. Without a doubt an 11/10 experience. We cannot wait to do it all again next year, and hopefully for many years to come! 😁

Pictures do not do justice to this cottage. As soon as we walked in , it was wow ! Very well equipped , very clean , bathrooms spotless , bed linen crisp and clean , lovely hot tub and a wood burning fire were a welcome bonus . Lots of parking . We even managed to get locked out but the manager was super helpful and let us in . The owners have taken great care furnishing this cottage , could not find a single fault . Lovely welcome hamper was left in the kitchen for us which was a lovely gesture . Spent 7 nights and worth every penny . Beds super comfy , lots of space to sit on sofa and couches . Outdoor furniture and a bbq was on site which was cleaned to an inch of its life , gardens very well kept , overall , well done to the owners , manager and cleaning staff . We simply could not find a fault even if we wanted to . Well done .

Im Old Counting House haben wir uns sehr wohl gefühlt. Besonders positiv empfanden wir:- den freundlichen Empfang durch die Hausverwalterin- die tadellose Sauberkeit- die geschmackvolle Einrichtung- die exzellenten neuen Matratzen- die ruhige Lage- sehr viel Platz im Haus- den sehr guten Grill und gepflegten Außenbereich- den sehr guten, gepflegten Whirlpool- die tägliche Müllentsorgung durch die Hausdame (Mülltüten einfach abends vor die Haustüre stellen)- den exzellenten Standard der Renovierung- drei vollwertige Bäder, was den Aufenthalt zu siebt sehr vereinfachteFür die Ausstattung haben wir nur wenige kleinere Verbesserungswünsche: der Herd ist für das Kochen für 7 Personen etwas zu leistungsschwach (große Pfanne wurde nicht richtig heiß) und es fehlen große Töpfe (z.B. für Pasta). Zum Entspannen könnten im Außenbereich noch Liegen bereitgestellt werden. Sonnenschirme und einen Windschutz für den Strandbesuch haben wir günstig gekauft und im Haus gelassen, ggf. können zukünftige Gäste diese weiterverwenden.Etwas unzufrieden war ich mit der Zahlungsabwicklung über finestretreats, die nicht so reibungslos ablief, wie über FeWo gewohnt (Überweisungsformular war auf UK-Bank ausgelegt).Gweek ist ein kleiner, sehr ruhiger Ort, ein Mietwagen ist für den Aufenthalt sehr zu empfehlen. Mit diesem erreicht man Einkaufsmöglichkeiten, zentrale Highlights Cornwalls und Strände dann auch recht schnell.Insgesamt also eine ganz klare Empfehlung für dieses Ferienhaus.

Great house for a get together with friends

The Old Counting house is a lovely old house which has been beautifully renovated to a very high standard. The accommodation worked perfectly for our annual get together with friends. Gweek is a small village within easy reach of the Lizard Peninsula and there are lovely walks both from the doorstep and further afield.

A very grand and Beautiful house everything you could ask for available.

Hot tub and fire were a bonus. Host was very easy to communicate with. Everything was so clean and tidy. Beds are so large and comfortable Tv in lounge is huge Sofas are comfortable Huge driveway to park cars. Would definitely recommend you won’t be disappointed

Stunning house a lot of thought gone into the renovations.

Beautiful bedding, towels that actually fully go round you lol Garden is beautiful great table over looking the boat yard & hot tub is a bonus. The property had everything you would need first a holiday would definitely book again it hard to put into words how beautiful the house is. Plenty to do without having to travel miles the furthest we travelled was to the Eden Project that was worth the visit. The cafe on the boat yard it well worth a visit we had a great break fast there, the staff were very friendly. If you are looking at this property book it you will love it & the location .

Beautiful house

This house is beautifully decorated spotlessly clean , extremely comfortable and very well equipped. It was like being home from home. The village has a shop that has most things in it and the staff are very friendly. It also has a pub but we unfortunately didn’t have time to use. The house is well situated and has many things to do in a short drive away. Lizards Point is a short drive away hand is well worth the visit for its spectacular views . A lovely place to stay, we highly recommend it. Can’t really fault it but we did run out of hot water quite a lot with everyone taking showers. Maybe adjust the timer to give hot water longer.

Immaculately clean, beautifully furnished!

My family and I had a wonderful time at The Old Counting House in Gweek. The property was immaculately clean, beautifully furnished, and had all the amenities needed for a relaxing holiday! The house is very spacious with tonnes of room for everyone including a big driveway and front garden. The hot tub was a huge hit with the kids and the location of the holiday home in the centre of Gweek made daily walks to the seal sanctuary, village shop, and lovely local cafe a joy! We really couldn't fault the holiday home in terms of space, quality, and amenities - we will definitely be back!
