The region
Luxborough enjoys a peaceful and beautiful setting in rural West Somerset, within Exmoor National Park. In years gone by people came to the area to mine iron ore and it was sent via the West Somerset Mineral Railway to Watchet on the coast. In the 19th century the school was reported to have 200 pupils from the village and the iron mines in the Brendon Hills!
Roadwater is situated 4 miles to the east and the popular village of Dunster is 5 miles to the north. Roadwater has a local shop, post office, village hall and an Inn and is situated approximately 4 miles from Williton, which has a larger range of shops providing for day to day needs.
Bridleways and footpaths crisscross near and through Luxborough, including the famous Coleridge Way which passes through the village.
The Royal Oak Inn is the village pub in Luxborough, serving drinks and good food, it's just over a mile away.
Wheddon Cross (approx 6 miles) has a mini-supermarket with Post Office facilities and a petrol station with good opening times. Roadwater is also has a local shop and pub which serves food. Dunster is also approx 4 miles, but in the other direction, this wonderful medieval village is really worth a visit, it has lots of shops, restaurants, tea rooms and a village shop.
Minehead is approx 7 miles away, located on the coastline. Here you will find the larger supermarkets and petrol stations (Tesco and Morrisons are both situated on the outskirts of the town and have long opening hours), plus a range of other shops throughout the town.
