Fowey makes a fabulous base for a self-catering break in Cornwall. Located within the South Coast – Eastern National Landscape, it’s a bustling harbour town with a vibrant water sports scene and a wealth of history. Enjoy views of landmark Place House and the river from the upper floor of this chic cottage, then explore Fowey’s cobbled streets – there are boutiques, bars and restaurants to discover. Wander towards the mouth of the river for a dip in sheltered Readymoney Cove or to visit 15th-century St Catherine’s Castle. The Bodinnick car ferry enables easy travel to other must-see destinations, including Looe, less than 12 miles away. Downriver, catch the Polruan Ferry to the ancient fishing village famed for its boat-building heritage. You could also visit the world-famous Eden Project (9 miles), Charlestown’s historic harbour (8 miles) and The Lost Gardens of Heligan (15 miles).
Part of a row of raised terraces on one of Fowey’s narrow, winding streets, this pretty cottage provides a peaceful retreat for a party of six. Steps lead up from the street to the front door. Step inside and you’ll find a small hallway and, to the right, a beautiful living room with a large bay window, wooden floors, an open fire and a choice of comfortable furniture. Opt for the window seat and you’ll have a view of Place House, or switch on the Smart TV for some home-style entertainment. To the rear, the room opens through to an on-trend kitchen and dining area. The dining area sits before double doors leading onto the courtyard, while a door from the kitchen area gives access to a utility area and the ground-floor W/C. Take the stairs from the hallway and the first floor offers two king-size bedrooms – the one at the front looks out to Place House – and a charming bathroom. On the second floor, a third, calming, king-size bedroom is set beneath the eaves. A desk in the dormer window on one side has dreamy views of Fowey’s historic St Fimbarrus Church, Place House and across the rooftops to the estuary. An en-suite cloakroom adds to the comfort of this master bedroom.
A charming terrace with a bench seat is at the front of the property – enjoy the view towards town as you watch the world go by. For a more private al fresco experience, step into the courtyard at the rear – accessed either from the dining area or via a separate side entrance, this is a useful storage spot for outdoor equipment and has a tap so you can wash sandy feet and paws.
