Xiron Chorion (often spelled Xiro Chorio) is a charming, tranquil hamlet situated just a few kilometers south of the bustling coastal city of Rethymno, right where you are in Crete. The name literally translates to "Dry Village" in Greek, which locals attribute more to its distinctly dry, comfortable microclimate than a lack of water—especially considering it sits adjacent to two large creeks.

With roots stretching back to the Venetian era, the village has seen a lot of history, including the 1920s population exchanges between Greece and Turkey. Today, it is a peaceful mix of traditional Cretan architecture, beautifully restored homes, and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. It perfectly balances secluded mountain serenity with quick access to the vibrant city life of Rethymno.

The main trail is a roughly 4.5 km linear hike connecting Xiro Chorio and the village of Chromonastiri. It is shaded by a dense canopy of sycamore, walnut, orange, and lemon trees. The trail is well-marked, relatively easy to moderate, and features wooden bridges and rest areas.

Chromonastiri Village: Located at the northern entrance of the Mili Gorge, this traditional village is famous for its narrow alleys, Byzantine churches (like Panagia Kera), and the impressive Military Museum housed in a restored Venetian villa.

Rethymno Old Town: Just a 10-minute drive away, the city offers a spectacular Venetian harbor, the massive Fortezza Citadel, and endless winding alleys filled with local boutiques, cafes, and excellent Cretan restaurants.

Arkadi Monastery: A bit further inland, this 16th-century monastery is a profound symbol of Cretan independence and resistance against the Ottomans. It is an architectural masterpiece and one of the most important historical sites on the island.

Beaches: The extensive sandy beaches of the Rethymno Riviera, including Adelianos Kampos and Missiria, are only a few kilometers down the hill from Xiro Chorio, only about a 10-minute drive.
