MARKETS & MARTEL LIFE:
Martel’s covered market hall (Les Halles) hosts a wonderful twice-weekly market (Wednesday & Saturday) year-round, with seasonal produce and local artisan finds—surrounded by cafés and terraces made for people-watching. It attracts hundreds of locals, those from further afield and visitors alike and is known to be the best market in the wider area

LOCATION:
A superb location, just a short 5 minute stroll into all the buzz of this lively, bustling medieval centre. Also just a few minutes walk to a beautiful park, perfect for those early morning dog walks, then walk a further 5 minutes from the Park into the town centre for your morning croissant, or stop off at one of the super cafes for coffee.

Or wander on down to LE TRUFFADOU STEAM TRAIN (Train à Vapeur de Martel) for a scenic ride through dramatic landscapes (open April–November; booking recommended), also just a 5/6 minute walk away. There's a superb cafe there too and a boutique, to enjoy a coffee, glass of wine or light lunch after your train trip. You can see & hear the trains from the garden. A trip not to be missed!

The famous REPTILAND on the edge of Martel is a favourite for families is about a 10 minute walk away or a 3 minute drive, a truly fascinating visit and its terrace gives a unique view of Martel. Enjoy sunbathing or a moment of relaxation lulled by the sounds of the Lot countryside. Reptiland became a unique exhibition in Europe and one of it's kind in the 1990's and is still as popular now as it was when it started. A collection of reptiles, a smiling happy team - the passion of a lifetime, it has become their duty to educate and respect nature and animals. Wheelchair accessible (manual or electric), air conditioned. Outside July and August, Reptiland offers 1/2 "Keeper for a Day" days. Contact us by email: contact@reptiland.fr or 0565374100

Because the villa is set in the centre of a popular tourist town, some traffic noise may be heard at busy times in the garden, but most guests find this does not disturb and the gentle sound of water bubbling away in the Jacuzzi softens any background bustle.

RIVER DAYS & SWIMMING:
In just a short drive (5/6 minutes) you’ll reach the sparkling River Dordogne, with river beaches, swimming, watersports, cafés and canoe hire. For a change of scene, the Lac du Causse (near Brive-la-Gaillarde) offers sandy shores and more watersports.

MARTEL BY DAY & NIGHT:
Between Romanesque details, medieval lanes and the striking Palais Raimondi, Martel is rich in heritage—yet always lively. In summer, the square often comes alive with music and evening events; book ahead for the best terraces.

FOOD & DRINK:
From relaxed cafés to elegant dinners, Martel is a joy for food lovers. Don’t miss the ARTISAN LAVENDER BOUTIQUE and CAFE at LA LAVAND'HIER where you can sit in their beautiful outdoor cafe overlooking a park all year tasting their delicious ice cream flavours, including lavender ice-cream or a glass of wine or beer including Lavender Beer. Or pick up freshly roasted coffee beans (or have them ground to your taste) at the local roaster BRULERIE GROUPIL and sit having a taster coffee before you buy. Lovely friendly owners, this unique coffee roastery only opened in October 2025. Being coffee affectionados, we can honestly say their freshly roasted coffee rivals even Monmouth Coffee in London's Covent Garden, where we buy our beans in England. The coffee at Brulerie Groupil is equally as good!

FAMILY FRIENDLY:
You’ll find parks, playgrounds and open spaces within a short walk, plus plenty of easy, memorable outings nearby—river beaches, canoeing, water parks and family attractions.

PET POLICY:
We’re delighted to welcome up to 2 well-behaved medium size dogs no larger than a German Shepherd/Retriever size and over 14 months old. The garden is fully enclosed for peace of mind.

THE DORDOGNE VALLEY - BEAUTIFULLY DONE:
Spend the day exploring villages and vineyards, then return to your private garden for an unhurried chilled apéritif or a glass of local wine and a long soak under the stars in the jacuzzi.
