Perfect place to stay, well equipped, well located
Thank you Jane and Rob - I loved my stay, the cottage was everything I hoped for and more. Very cozy, well equipped (there was never anything I looked for and couldn't find) and a great location right near the hills, did lots of walking rain or shine. Thank you for being so responsive to all of my questions and needs. Will stay again if I am in Halifax!

Our time spent in a wonderful Cottage in Halifax
The lovely Dyer's Cottage which had everything we needed for our week long stay was very impressive. The cottage has been renovated to a very high standard, but has kept it's old world charm. We would like to thank Jane for being the perfect host. I would highly recommend Halifax and Jane's beautiful cottage.

It was not our first trip to Halifax, but the most comfortable and best equipped accomodation so far. Thanks a lot for the moast aomprehensive information we ever received in advance. We liked this quiet location as starting point for numerous hikes - the moores, Hebden Bridge, Shibden Hall and the Wainhouse Tower - we were impressed very much. Spacious and well-equipped
We spent Christmas in this delightful cottage and it was perfect for the two of us. Everything was clean and beautifully furnished. It was nice and cosy, but more spacious than expected. Well-equipped kitchen, an amazing bath and bathroom, the most comfortable bed, lovely cosy fire - we even had a full-sized Christmas tree! The owners had thought of everything. Great pub just two doors down. Lots of nice walks in local area, took us about 40 minutes to walk into Halifax centre. Would definitely recommend and would love to return at some point.

Sweetheart of a cottage & location
We loved staying at Dyer's Cottage! We moved right in & felt very much at home for our 5 days. It's centrally located for daytrips-- we drove to Fountains Abbey, Saltaire Village, Manchester & Conwy Castle in Wales. Besides seeing closer & more local areas & events. We found a sweetheart of a cottage there in Sowerby Bridge. Thanks Jane for your details in the cottage.

The property is very well-maintained and comfortable.
The property is very well-maintained and comfortable. I own a vacation rental and know how much effort it takes to maintain a place like Jane does. The place is well-stocked in the kitchen and I didn’t need anything at all. I really enjoyed the pub next-door and wish I had a place like this near my house in Texas.
The plumbing fixtures are all very nice and the lighting is excellent. The view from the bedroom window out over the country side is spectacular in the morning. The neighbors are very nice and quiet and I was always able to get a parking spot right in front of the property.
I looked through the photo album of the remodel project and it is a truly remarkable restoration.
I highly recommend this property as a vacation rental or corporate rental for anyone.

Lovely cottage in a great location
We had lovely four nights in a very comfortable, well appointed, dog friendly cottage. All mod cons but loaded with history. The cottage is very well appointed with everything you could need for a short stay. Lots of information about the local area and details of the best places to eat and drink. ( A real gem is the Wainhouse Tavern 3 doors away. The lamb pie is amazing).
Our host was really knowledge about the local area and provided us with some great ideas for places to visit. Overall we had a fabulous few days and would highly recommend the cottage to anyone who wishes to experience the Calder Valley and surrounding area..

I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Dyer’s Cottage near Halifax and thank you for finding the time to write us this review. The cottage is full of history and is situated in a very interesting local area ( we are surprised that this little corner isn’t a Conservation Area but as it isn’t, it made the renovation project slightly easier). John Edward Wainhouse has certainly left his mark on this corner of Skircoat/Pye Nest. We agree the pub named after him (his former house, is a real gem and, as you found, is both human and dog friendly! The Calder Valley has a lot to offer visitors, walks a plenty, art galleries, historic buildings, interesting shopping and excellent public transport too. It would be great to welcome you again.

Truly Beautiful Home
My wife and I loved Dyer's Cottage for many reasons. Jane, the owner was generous with her time and sharing insights to the Halifax area. The accommodations are splendid, clean and quiet. Modern amenities and comfortable, even a view of the pastures on the hills beyond from the bedroom window. There is street parking and a traditional British Pub three doors down - excellent! A great jump off point to explore Yorkshire and Lancaster National Trust sites, National Parks, York by train was less than an hour. Halifax is beautiful in it's own right.
Jane and Dyer's Cottage are as delightful as the beautiful English country side and the cheerful friendliness of the people of Yorkshire. We look forward to coming back and will spread the word, if asked. Fantastic !

Dyers cottage is perfect for a break in the countryside. It is beautifully renovated, extremely well equipped and offers a comfort that makes you feel you have been there longer than a few days. There is an abundance of local walks on the doorstep with breathtaking scenery, in addition just a short walk away are pubs, restaurants and bars offering great food, locally brewed beers and hospitality. We will definitely be back for a longer stay!

Thank you so much for your very kind comments and we are so pleased that your short break in Calderdale was so enjoyable. Renovating Dyer's Cottage was a challenge but we too find it a lovely place to retreat to when we want to relax. We are still discovering new places to visit and it's lovely to go for walks at any time of year.
We look forward to welcoming you again.

Beautifully renovated cottage
We were totally pleased with the cottage and also the owner, Jane. She welcomed us with groceries so we did not have to go out to shop immediately and she also had a vase of sweet williams on the window bottom. Additionally, she introduced us to one of the neighbours who was very friendly and helpful during our three weeks stay.
Everything in the cottage was as advertised, spotless, and well maintained. We lacked for nothing! Jane was also readily available to answer any questions. The pub was two doors away serving traditional Yorkshire fare and other foods. All the locals in the pub were also very friendly and helpful. Several good restaurants are in the area and I would not hesitaite to rebook in the future.

Short break with our dog
Lovely little cottage ideal for two with a great bathroom and a fabulous superking sized bed. Be aware of the top step on the stairs though as it is a little higher than the others and can catch you out when going downstairs if you forget. The neighbours on both sides are lovely and ready to give you advice on things to do and see in the local area. Our dog loved it with walks along the Rochdale canal and also up to the nearby Wainhouse Tower.

I am so pleased you enjoyed your long weekend in Dyer's Cottage and thank you for your kind words. We agree that the top step is a little higher than the others. When the builders were renovating the cottage, they did manage to alter the top step a little by increasing the width of it, but we hope that the banisters and the handrail will help anyone who is a little unsteady on their feet. It's one of the quirky features of staying in an old property!
I hope you may decide to return for a longer stay in the future; there are many more walks for you and your dog to try out!

Very comfortable cottage, ideal for sightseeing.
We had a really lovely time at your cottage and were impressed with all your renovations and found the bathroom really luxurious. The cottage was well equipped and the bed was really comfortable. We found the cottage very accommodating and a great base to explore the local attractions. We particularly enjoyed visiting Howarth, home of the Bronte sisters, as the BBC were preparing to film a drama about their brother and were busy making the shops in the village look authentic for the period. We would recommend a trip to The Navigation Pub , great food and very friendly service, but be prepared for the hilly walk back to the cottage.

I am so pleased that you had an enjoyable stay at Dyer's Cottage, Wendy. As you experienced, there is a lot to do in this part of the South Pennines and film crews are often in the area which is famous for popular series such as Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax and several canal programmes which have featured the Navigation Inn.
I look forward to welcoming you back again.
Many thanks for taking the time to write your kind words.

Beautiful cosy cottage
We stayed in the cottage for a longer term stay whilst our new house was being renovated and it was the perfect place to come back to and relax away from the building work! The cottage has been renovated to a high standard, and has great facilities, I particularly enjoyed the huge bath after a day labouring and the shower is also a high powered. The living room has plenty of room, complete with a wood burner effect gas fire for those chilly evenings and whilst the kitchen is compact it has everything you need for a holiday stay. There is a pretty garden at the front with a bench seat & make sure that you take advantage of any sunny mornings and evenings to sit out with a drink! I'd certainly stay again & would recommend it to family or friends visiting the area. Jane was great to deal with & we'll be inviting her to our new house when it's finally ready.
As a local I'll recommend a few places that are within walking/short driving distance; The Shepherds Rest pub is only a 10 minute walk down the hill heading towards Sowerby Bridge - traditional pub with a warm welcome.
If you carry on into Sowerby Bridge there are several to choose from - The Works is an freehouse serving a wide range of real ales & good wine and food during the day and a great brunch menu on Sundays (it also has a monthly folk night on a Wednesday and a comedy club on a Saturday which attracts a wide range of comedians). The Firehouse serves great food upstairs with a busy bar area on the ground floor. The Hogshead Tavern is a new addition - real ales, wine in a large converted workshop. Cobblestones Bar & Bistro serves great food with a bit of a twist and is in a perfect spot overlooking the canal.
If you want to venture slightly further afield I'd recommend The Winterburn just out of Warley village (5 min drive or a nice healthy walk to work up an appetite) - worth going for the views alone and it's all down hill on the way back! Halifax also has a good range of pubs & restaurants, The Three Pigeons is a grade 2 listed building with it's original 1920's decor intact (and a warm welcome to go with it) for restaurants try Ricci's place in the town centre or Ricci's Tapas at the Dean Clough complex.
Halifax is good central spot for venturing further afield. There are good train links to Leeds & Manchester & you can easily go into the Yorkshire Dales or the Peak District for a day, or even the East Coast if you get up early

I am so pleased you enjoyed your 2 week stay in Dyer's Cottage over Christmas and New Year and thank you so much for your kind words. The cottage is in the Wainhouse heritage area and actually features on the Wainhouse Trail because of its extremely unusual window dating from about 1650.

I am fascinated by genealogy and the history of buildings and this is what makes Dyer's Cottage so special. The cottage has been occupied by my family for over 200 years but the first proof of this is the 1841 census when John Kenyon born 1777 was listed as living in it with my great great great grandfather, William, his youngest son born 1824. His son James, my great great grandfather bought the property from the estate of John Edward Wainhouse,( who commissioned the building of the 77m high tower nearby) in1887 and gave it to his daughter Julia, my great grandmother to live in with her husband and young son. My grandmother was born a little while later and lived in the cottage until her marriage. She was left the cottage by her father when he died in 1934 and decided to do a few improvements for her tenants. The cottage was then left to my mother and now it belongs to me. I then spent 6 months of 2015 supervising local tradespeople bringing it into the 21st century which involved creating drains for a bathroom, completely re plastering all the walls, laying floor coverings, re wiring the basic electricity there was, and creating a kitchen. I kept as many original features as possible in order to keep the character but added home comforts such as hot water, a gas powered logburner and gas central heating. I decorated it in neutral colours and have tried to blend modern decorations and furnishings into an old framework. It is truly a real "home from home" and was described by a guest in March 2018 as "exquisite" I enjoy watching house programmes, thrillers and historical dramas on tv and particularly enjoy all those written by Sally Wainwright which are filmed locally like "Last Tango in Halifax", "Happy Valley" and "Gentleman Jack". I enjoy walking and have learnt many new skills whilst volunteering at a local hospice charity shop.
Por qué escogió este alojamiento
I have had a keen interest in genealogy for many years and feel very strongly that a cottage which has been in the family for so long, should remain in it. Unfortunately I am unable to live in it permanently at the moment so hope that by letting it to holiday makers, more people will have the chance to share in its amazing history. It was for many years owned by the owners of the local dyeworks, the Wainhouse family and the Master Dyer's were given accommodation in the neighbouring cottages. The last member of the family, John Edward Wainhouse left a distinguished legacy on the local landscape most obvious of which is a 77m tower, the tallest folly in the world, which is illuminated at night. With over 400 internal steps, it is now owned by Calderdale Council who open it on specific days of each year when it is possible to climb nearly 400 steps to the top gallery. People have even seen Blackpool 50 miles away! Dyer's Cottage features on a Heritage Walk round this special part of Halifax called The Wainhouse Trail. Up to 40 people may join it on summer Bank Holidays and an expert guide explains all there is to know about the distinctive architecture and local history. We have left a copy of the trail in the information folder for our guests to follow at their leisure.
Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial
A recent guest advised me to make more of the local area in which Dyer's Cottage is part of, with buses, pubs, shops and restaurants all within a 10 minute walk. The Wainhouse area has its own history and we are proud to be part of its heritage having been owned by the Wainhouse family in the 18th and most of the 19th centuries when Master Dyers at their dyeworks lived in the building. We love the old character features like the wooden ceiling beams in the sitting room which extend through into the neighbouring cottages, the beautiful fireplace with gas cast iron stove and the exposed stone wall with mullioned window dating from 1650 in the kitchen. We had to undertake a few restoration jobs, sometimes by different ways when the first didn't work. I am indebted to the great team of local tradesmen who helped me. We wanted to create a home from home experience for our guests so that it has the cosy feel of a cottage but the luxury of a hotel. My husband has created the lovely garden from an overgrown jungle with massive hedges. We found extra paving slabs buried a foot down and bought more to extend the patio. We used stones from the wall where we created the landing window to edge the flower beds. The old kitchen sink is now filled with flowers. The cottage has the benefit of very high ceilings for a property of its age and the rooms are much more spacious than you may imagine. Rather than squeeze in 2 bedrooms, we decided not to compromise the upstairs layout, so created a large bathroom from what used to be the other bedroom. This has resulted in a large bedroom, a spacious landing/workspace and a luxurious bathroom.
