The Maison des Monks is a former outbuilding of the Château de Castelnau Bretenoux (Centre of National Monuments)
From the 16th century, and completely restored, this charming building with red stones is located at the foot of the ramparts and in the heart of a listed and protected village... you will be enchanted by the beauty of the place and the exceptional view of the valley of the Dordogne.
Its location is unique, it is at the heart of the circuit of wonders, just a few minutes from the most beautiful and greatest sites in the region.

Our stay at LA MAISON DES MOINES was perfect. The house was very comfortable and cosy. Everything worked very well. The rooms stayed cool even when it was hot outside, and the shady pergola was fantastic. Christiane and Bernard were great hosts—very caring and did everything to make our vacation wonderful. Our highest recommendations!

Excellent séjour

Le gite, au pied du château, est exceptionnel. Nous avons vraiment beaucoup apprécié notre séjour. Christiane et Bernard, nos hôtes, étaient très attentifs, sympathiques et accueillants. Nous reviendrons avec grand plaisir dans ce gite pour profiter de cette belle région.

Pittoresque

Chaque année, nous louons un gîte. Donc, nous sommes habitués à trouver des endroits magnifiques et pittoresques. Mais cet endroit est vraiment superbe, calme. Dépaysement garanti. La location est vraiment au pied du château. La région que nous connaissions déjà, est vraiment magnifique. Ce gîte est très proche d’endroits splendides, comme le gouffre de Padirac, Collonges-la-Rouge, Beaulieu sur Dordogne, rocamadour, etc... Le couple qui s’occupe de la location est adorable, si ils lisent ces quelques lignes, encore merci à eux pour leur gentillesse, et un petit clin d’œil pour le vin aux noix. Encore merci.

Le Quercy enchanteur

Superbe séjour dans cette région très riche en patrimoine. On a apprécié la proximité avec la Dordogne pour les baignades (beaucoup d endroits accueillants pour les baignades) les balades en canoë. Il y a une concentration de villages magnifiques à visiter. Les gens sont charmants. Le gîte était très très agréable et les propriétaires absolument charmants. Ils nous ont beaucoup conseillé pour les visites alentour et les activités pour les enfants. Super séjour !!!

Un endroit unique , une magnifique demeure en pierre au pied du château de Castelnau .L’imposante structure du château d’un côté et de l’autre une vue imprenable sur la vallée . A wonderful place to stay

We cannot recommend this Gite highly enough. The situation was perfect nestling at the foot of the ramparts of the Chateau Castelnaud very peaceful and with wonderful views. The Gite itself was lovely with high quality furniture and fittings. There are some lovely places to visit within easy reach, Collonges les Rouges which is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Beaulieu sur Dordogne with its medieval centre, and of course Rocamadour and Padirac. Christiane and Bernard the owners could not have been nicer or more helpful especially when my husband was taken ill while we were on holiday. Thank you both once again for all you did for us. All in all we will definitely return to this beautiful place and we would give it five stars.

Fabulous location, great views, well equipped and comfortable, surrounded by history

This is a great place to base yourself for visiting sites like Rocamadour and Gouffre de Padirac. We also spent a day canoeing on the Dordogne (there are plenty of companies that offer this, we went with Safaraid). It was a lovely way to spend the day. There are also countless medieval villages to explore. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful. The gite itself is a medieval building with big rooms and high ceilings in the grounds of Chateau de Castelnau with stunning uninterrupted views over the valley below. It was very well equipped, we needed for nothing. There’s no WiFi (but there is 4G coverage) and the gite itself doesn’t have a dedicated parking space but there are several spaces about 2min walk away and you can drive up to the gite to load and unload. We ate one night at Le Ramparts restaurant (also in castle grounds). The food was pleasant and reasonably priced, but you need to book in advance if there’s an event at the castle (and there seem to be plenty of opera festivals in the summer). Bernard, the owner, can also offer many other excellent restaurant recommendations. We absolutely loved our week here and will never forget it.

Der besondere Urlaub

Bei unserer Ankunft wurden wir von den Vermietern sehr nett mit einem köstlichen, selbstgebackenem Nusskuchen begrüßt. Das Haus strahlt eine einmalige, interessante Atmosphäre aus und hat durch die direkte Nachbarschaft mit dem Chateau ein ganz besonderes Flair. Wir haben uns wohlgefühlt und können das Haus nur weiterempfehlen.

A great place to stay - what a landmark!

The gite is over three levels and the main rooms are fantastic. The kitchen, toilet and bathroom are basic, but remember the place was built at the same time as the castle. Both Christiane and Bernard are lovely people and made us feel very welcome. The views are fantastic.

Absolutely delightful, spotlessly clean and ideally located for very interesting sightseeing

This gite is very characterful and charming, situated in an unspoilt ancient red sandstone village, with some properties now being converted and others waiting for brave imaginative and creative people to sensitively restore past splendour. The gite is nestled below the impressive chateau of Castelnau and we thoroughly enjoyed the peace in the evenings, sipping wine in the courtyard, listening to the jackdaws and wheeling screaming swifts, and watching the evening sunlight dancing on the glowing chapel stonework. The kitchen is very well equipped, and there is plenty of glassware crockery and cutlery for five. Plus a dishwasher. The dining room and sitting room are spacious and comfortable but we chose to eat out of doors. As there were only two us the umbrella was adequate to provide shade but not for five people if the gite were fully occupied. Similarly there are only two sun beds, and a small table around which five people would have difficulty eating outside. There was a lovely vine shaded area and we suggested that the delightful proprietor should put an additional table and chairs there, and reduce the hedge a little to give a fantastic view of the valley below. The bedrooms are downstairs; the one with three beds is very spacious, with a little sitting area in addition, and the double bedroom is. also a good size. The huge bonus about the downstairs bedrooms is that regardless of heat outside (35 degrees when we were there) we slept well as the rooms were really cool. The bathroom is downstairs with a bath, and the shower head is excellent. Some people might not like the fact that the loo is upstairs, and does not have a hand basin. There is a small flight of stairs up into the courtyard so avoid heavy suitcases... There is a very conveniently located restaurant with friendly charming staff a five minute stroll from the gite which was perfect for our first evening. The nearest bakery and food shopping is in Bretenoux, which is a 10 minute drive away, We really loved our home from home, perfectly located for visiting Gouffre de Padirac, Lascaux (a must), Rocamadour , Turenne chateau and many more local picturesque villages in the area. Highly recommended!

Super séjour

La maison des moines est un lieu d'exception, quiétude du lieu ,la maison très bien restaurée , décorée avec beaucoup de goût et le confort moderne . L'accueil très chaleureux, la gentillesse, la générosité de madame Bourdiol et de sa maman contribuent aussi à la réussite de notre séjour ,que du bonheur!... .Nous reviendrons sans hésiter , dès qu'on le pourra .
