Spacious, fresh American style barn. The perfect location for a relaxing getaway
With 3 bedrooms and 4 beds the house comfortably hosts up to 6 guests. There is a large fully equipped kitchen and dining area with plenty of areas to sit and relax. Enjoy views of the surrounding mountains from the front, Ōkārito kiwi sanctuary and Lake Pratt from the rear and a spacious garden with decking to sit, chill and take it all in. A place to enjoy peace and nature.
Set on a hectare of land with views of the mountains out front, Lake Pratt to the side and Ōkarito Sanctuary (home of New Zealand's rarest kiwi) to the back you are sure to feel totally immersed in the stunning landscape and rich biodiversity that surrounds you.
This is an ideal getaway anytime of the year. In Summer explore the surrounding lush rainforest, swim or kayak in clear waters of Lake Mapourika. Visit the beach at Okarito and walk the trig to experience stunning views of the Mount Cook ranges. At the house, take time to cook in the kitchen and sit out on the decking taking in the perfectly stunning views surrounded by native bird call. Chill and relax on the outdoor seating with the fire pit going, enjoy a glass of wine whilst watching the sun set. Then as it falls dark, listen out for the call of the kiwi in the sanctuary overlooking the house.
In Winter, the days are crisp and clear, perfect for taking a Heli ride to stand on top of the glaciers or walk round Lake Matheson to take in the famous mirror image of Mount Cook on the lake. Enjoy an al fresco coffee or meal in one of the many cafes. Then head to the house to curl up in front of the wood fire, read a book, knit, watch tv or make a puzzle. It’s a space you can truly switch off from the hustle and bustle of life and get back to the simple things in life.

Kia ora and welcome to Waimanu House. In Maori 'Wai' means water and 'manu' means bird - both something Franz is renowned for!
I'm originally from the UK and moved to NZ 11 years ago, moving to the South Island last year. I instantly fell in love with Franz Josef and the many adventures it offers so decided to settle and work here. I live next door to the accommodation and I'm often busy but if you do need anything just let me know.

There is so much that attracted me to this beautiful part of the world. Lush rainforests, glacial mountains, clear lakes, stunning beaches and plenty of walks to recharge and take it all in.

Waimanu is set on a hectare of land nestled between mountains, lakes and rainforests. It provides peaceful and stunningly beautiful surroundings and complete privacy.
It is very spacious with a fully equipped kitchen enabling you to settle in and feel at home. You can go at a slow pace for a few days but still have plenty of time to explore the many delights and activities Franz has to offer.
It’s great for family/friends get togethers if you’re looking to meet up and connect with loved ones in a relaxed and comfortable environment.
There is a large garden and orchard to wander in whilst taking in the views of the snowy mountains.
Waimanu is located in the heart of Predator Free South Westland, an ambitious project to eliminate predators from the landscape to allow the native biodiversity to flourish. Evidence of this can be seen and heard through the abundance of bird life, plus the property overlooks Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary, home to the rare rowi kiwi, now thriving due to the predator control carried out.
It is very spacious with a fully equipped kitchen enabling you to settle in and feel at home. You can go at a slow pace for a few days but still have plenty of time to explore the many delights and activities Franz has to offer.
