Acerca de este alojamiento
Lake Summit house and boathouse stocked with all the fun stuff.
This is a very spacious house rebuilt in the 70's with quality vintage furniture that has been around long enough to be cool again! Built originally to accommodate a bus load of campers The gathering rooms are very spacious.
The kitchen and supplies are designed to entertain. There are 2 stove tops, 3 ovens and 1 microwave. The place settings match up to eight with extra of almost everything including a variety of knives, utensils. pots, pans and bowls for serving and prepping.
A paved driveway at the house has parking for at least 3 cars as does the area in front of the boathouse.
The boathouse and house are separated by a row of 60 steps. The distance is close enough to speak to each other. The rustic, non-winterized boathouse, is a completely separate house with kitchen, bath and one bedroom.
As you wander around the house you’ll find one upstairs bedroom with a king size bed, a walk in closet and a full bath. The entire upstairs is an open area with lots of comfortable sofas, a large screen TV, a bar, and a half bath inconspicuously tucked away in the corner. The mud room is located off the kitchen. There you’ll find bikes for your use on the lake. You’ll also find a few useful tools, brooms, vacuum, etc..
Walking straight through the kitchen you’ll end up on the porch and a beautiful view of Lake Summit. The wooded area between the boathouse and the main house is a healthy mix of plants that attract various species of birds, butterflies, squirrels and other wildlife. You may see harmless moths and other flying insects that you’ve never seen before. They are part of the life chain and are amazingly useful in keeping the mosquito population almost non existent. If the screen doors are open at night the moths will fly in but they will fly out when the lights go out.
The bookshelves are stocked with all types of reading material for ages 1 to 111. A few magazines about local attractions around Asheville, Hendersonville, Brevard, Saluda, Tryon and other nearby towns are on the homemade coffee table in the living room.
Downstairs you'll find a large bedroom with a king size bed has a view of the lake, a TV, full bath, one large walk-in closet, another clothing closet and a linen closet.
The room directly across from the master bedroom has a full bed and a small closet.
The last bedroom downstairs has two twin beds and an adjoining full bath that opens into the common area, which we call the rec room.
The ping pong table comes in handy for folding clothes since the laundry room is right there and is the last room in the downstairs.
The back door at the bottom of the stairway goes out to the middle level porch. This is the route to the boat house. Continue down the stairs to the 3rd porch, down the 60 brick steps to North Lake Summit Rd and follow across to the big green boathouse.
The boathouse is a great separate full house with a queen bedroom, full bath and another kitchen with a refrigerator and stove. The living room is spacious and has a TV, queen fold out sofa and wet bar.
The long porch stretches across the full width of the 3 boat slips below. The gas stove inside the kitchen can also be used as grill. If you are coming in the spring, summer and fall, the boathouse is a great place to stay overnight. Unfortunately, due to short term visits the water is turned off in the winter to prevent frozen pipes. (December, January, February). You are still welcome to enter the boathouse, use the paddle boats and boards and sit inside and enjoy the beautiful winter sunsets on the lake.
The lake is filled by the headwaters of the Green river and several mountain springs around the lake (I believe 32) so the water is always fresh and refreshing! You have 2 canoes, a sunfish sailboat, one two seater kayak, 3 paddle boards and some floaty things at your disposal to enjoy and to go out and explore the lake. Fishing poles are available also.
At the boathouse one of my favorite past times is gardening. I’ve planted butterfly bushes and milkweed. You’ll see many swallowtails and hummingbirds but if you ever see a monarch please let me know. The ducks and fish are easily lured into view anytime someone throws the slightest crumb off the boathouse. Although, best not to feed the ducks.
Jogging, walking or biking along the lake road is a very popular activity. It's peaceful and quiet, hardly ever a car. If you want to go for a longer bike ride there are great loops that take you through the historic town of Saluda or Hendersonville. Routes range from 20 to 40 and 80 miles. The National Downhill Mt. Bike Championships are being hosted by a local park in Zirconia. The Kanuga mt. bike park is in Hendersonville.
As your host it warms my heart to know you are able to come and experience all the same things I love about Lake Summit. I hope you make the most of your stay and have fun creating some lifelong memories.

Preguntas frecuentes
Acerca de su propietario/a
Propietario/a: Kathy McLeod

I grew up in Asheville, was born in Spartanburg and spent summers at our family camp in Brevard, which included trips to Lake Summit. I Graduated with a BA in Philosophy / Religion from UNC-Chapel Hill.
As a camper I was always looking for a sport to play no matter where or when it was during the year. I had a horse, I played water polo, raced bicycles, played soccer and tennis..... Growing up at camp connected me with my love for the outdoor environment. I love gardening and encouraging habitats. I find butterfly life cycles fascinating so I've tried to plant milkweed and lots of pollinating flowers with big nectar flowers. I've named the house "Kamama". A Cherokee word for butterfly.
Some of my most memorable moments with family and friends happened at Lake Summit. As a camper we came in a packed school bus to our house at the lake! We swarmed the boathouse all day playing games on foam boards in the water and running up and down the stairs from lake to house playing, singing, sunning, and eating, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
As a professional person out in the world I've worked in various ways since the 1990's through Safe Routes to School to make the world a more walkable and bikeable place. I currently work during the school calendar year as Supervisor for Safe Routes to Schools Crossing Guard Program.
At one point in life I raced bikes and became a 3 time national champion. Achieved All-American award goalie in the Junior Olympics in water polo. Our team went to World Championships in 1976, long before the sport was in the Olympics for women.
The most important, endearing, rewarding, and ongoing moments in life are the times I can spend with my son and husband, Blair and John. They come to the lake from California during the summer whenever possible.
While we are away, I love knowing that others are able to enjoy the house and lake. I like to be in touch with my guests and hear about their experience. I live vicariously through their feedback!

Por qué escogió este alojamiento
Lake Summit has been an incredibly important place to me all my life. Lake Summit is the ONLY lake I've spent so much time. I've been to other lakes but since I have such specifically detailed memories of what I like in a lake experience there could be no other lake to compare. My extended family is intrenched on both sides of the lake. Deep memories tell me what a makes a lake even more fun than just having the water to enjoy. Lake Summit is the perfect size. The Green River below the Damn is for white water rafting and the Green River feeding into the lake is great for a paddling trip, the smooth well maintained dirt road around the lake has very low vehicular traffic. The total distance around is 8 miles, includes a couple of nice gradual climbs and lots of twists and turns to keep things interesting and challenging, great for daily exercise. The width of the lake is perfect for a quick boat ride or paddle over so to avoid a long ride in the car. The length of the lake is perfect for motoring around or skiing. Rose Island is toward the head of the lake and is a nice destination for a picnic, a point of reference and a great turn around for skiers.
Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial
My parents bought a lot of property on the hilltop at Whistle Lane back in the 1970's. It is now all owned by our Family Partnership. It is totally separate and borders my driveway. It is nice to know that it will stay as is. Mom named the road Whistle Lane to represent the train tracks that you cross 4 times to get to the house. Every time the whistle blew I would race up the hill from the house, no matter what I was doing. If I ran fast enough I could wave to the conductor and see that powerful loud engine passing through the serene quiet wooded setting. I counted the cars and sometimes saw someone to wave to at the caboose. Then back to serenity again as the train passed. This happened every few hours back then. As a child, the whistle meant excitement, energy, connections and fun. The train has been out of operation for decades but the idea of a "Rails to Trails" pathway is in the works. This will be such a fun amenity for our neighborhood. A bike ride to Saluda or Hendersonville would be safe and separate from cars. (Send the teen to pick up the milk at the grocery!) The same bike ride for adults will be a treasured memory as the trail will connect to other trails at the bottom of the mountain in South Carolina and around the mountains in North Carolina to Brevard and other towns beyond Hendersonville!
