Safety, Health, and Cleanliness Concerns
My husband, dog, and friend needed a rental as we had to evacuate for Hurricane Milton. We selected this rental because it had a fenced back yard for our dog and enough bedrooms to accommodate us and our friend.
We could not afford the early check-in fee, so we waited in the driveway until check in time at 4:00 p.m. At 4:01 p.m., I had to text the host to ask for the door code.
Upon entry, we discovered that the living room furniture was worn and broken; the area rug had unknown brownish stains. A door under the house was open, providing easy access for Florida rodents (a common problem here). The rear doors lacked effective locks and the doors and walls needed deep cleaning.
After 30 minutes, we decided to leave due to safety and health concerns. We did not make this decision lightly. Other rentals and hotels were filling quickly with Milton evacuees. However, we knew we would not sleep a wink in this house due to health and safety concerns.
After reporting the issues to the host within an hour, he offered to fix them. However, given our 2 night stay, he would not have been able to replace the carpet, secure the locks, and secure the area under the home before nightfall.
I normally communicate suggestions directly to the host after my stay via VRBO messaging. However, due to the condition of this house and safety, health and cleanliness concerns, it's important for potential renters to be aware.
