Acerca de este alojamiento
A comfortable bungalow in a village in the jungle
A "Sanctuary within a Sanctuary", that enables a unique view of ancient Sigiriya & Pidurangala Rocks.
What a guest had to say :-
“We really enjoyed the 5 nights we spent at Chris’ - (John's) house in the forest. The place is spacious and comfortable and simply but beautifully decorated. We prepared our own dinners in the fully equipped kitchen, but several resto options are available nearby. The house has direct views of Sigiriya and is perfectly located for day trips to all the great cultural sites of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, etc. Chris & Anu are gracious hosts and helped us with suggestions and information. Its perfect for those preferring a private forest house instead of a busy tourist hotel.” – Steve, Washington-USA, Jan 2024.
The Bungalow - is a two storied structure with front & rear decks provides a setting of quietude within a comfortable bungalow to relax, enjoy the view, listen to the birds or light music, read a book or watch a documentary.
It is an ideal location for nature lovers, birdwatchers, travellers, photographers, artists, musicians, writers, historians, or simply for a quiet holiday to travel to a series of national parks, archeological sites or to surrounding places of exceptional scenic beauty.
A base from which to explore Pidurangala, Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa , Anuradhapura & visit the National Parks - Minneriya, Kaudulla, Angamedilla, Hurulu Eco P, Flood plains, Somawathiya and several archeological sites close by or a break journey place when traveling to the North.
The Bungalow is located within a Wild life Sanctuary & Archeological Reserve.
- it is a place for those who love beauty, tranquility and the environment -
"Karanda Retreat" - is named after the Karanda trees that surround it. It is Located on one & half acre of land with a variety of vegetation ranging from the tall forest trees to creepers of the scrub and the grassland which are home to a variety of insects, reptiles, mammals and birds. It is the surrounds that makes Karanda Retreat special for the lover of the wilderness. The waterhole in front of the bungalow and the wet-weather streamlet that flows at the rear boundary adds another dimension to the landscape and the environment. Hornbills (both species) frequent the tall trees, scimitar babblers the scrub, snipe and the painted storks the marshy grassland, and soaring overhead are eagles. Frogs and dragon flies inhabit the waterhole (an otter was once seen), hare and mongoose the grassland, and the elephants walk through.
The trees are a favourite haunt of all three species of Monkeys (the Langur, the Leaf Monkey and the Toque). During the drought, when all the neighbouring tanks dry out, water is pumped into the base of the waterhole and a host of fauna, including sambhur and elephant come to quench their thirst.

Preguntas frecuentes
Acerca de su propietario/a
Propietario/a: John
As a person associated with Wild Life conservation and travelling the island, particularly with the book production “Eloquence in Stone” - the lithic saga of Sri Lanka, by Studio Times Ltd, I have a deep appreciation of the countryside and strongly believe in living in sustainable harmony with the environment.
The scrub jungle and trees have been left as it was, so that the birds could nest, the hare could hide, the sambhur and the elephant have cover when they come to drink from the waterhole.
Morning, noon and night, you have that incredible view of ancient Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks, from every room in the bungalow.
I am based part time in Colombo where I co-host Zeylans.colombo: A Photographer’s Home with my wife. Karanda Retreat Bungalow is my second home and I will be with you to host your stay and assist you.

Por qué escogió este alojamiento
Sigiriya is literally the center of the country! Most places of interest can be reached quite easily from Sigiriya.
Our aim is to create a "Sanctuary within the Sanctuary", where the indigenous flora and fauna are protected and are free of any threat. Located on an acre and half of typical dry zone scrub forest, the land is without boundaries, with paddy fields in front, and spreading out towards tall trees that border a tank on the right and with a magnificent view of Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks which of an evening are mirrored in the waterhole that is part of the property. It is the ideal place to walk and explore the area and if it is the monsoon season, it is especially thrilling to sit on the balcony and watch the thunderstorm or curl up in bed and read.
Staying at the bungalow is a beautiful experience.
Living in harmony with and a respect for the environment and the village is important to us.

Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial
The unique - incredible view of ancient Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks, - especially from the front upstair deck, and also from every room in the bungalow, morning, noon and night!!
The balcony is also a place of peace & solitude to sit quietly, read, observe the eagles struggling soar in the wind, and watch out for the animals coming to drink from the waterhole throughout the day and in the night. Clear, quiet nights offer viewing of stars and comets without the city glow! Contemplations and reflective thoughts are unavoidable.
