Staying at the Toombs House is like stepping back into the Roaring Twenties, Sarasota-style. The gourmet kitchen is fully stocked with all the cooking utensils and appliances you need to prepare any meal, plus beautiful fine China to serve it on.
Toombs House History:
The historic Toombs House was built in 1926 during the Florida Land Boom, a period of intense growth during the 1920s before the stock market crashed and the country was plunged into the Great Depression. This remarkably preserved example of the Mediterranean Revival style boasts hallmark elements like a terracotta roof, arched windows, handmade tiles and charming wrought-iron accents.
At the time the historic Toombs House was built in 1926, the state of Florida was riding the tail end of a wave of real estate development that was doomed to crash beginning in March the following year. Sarasota had experienced a period of wild, unrestrained growth during the early 1920s, during which time one of its most luxurious communities, Whitfield Estates, was planned around the newly built Whitfield Estates Country Club, now the Sara Bay Country Club.
The Toombs House received a few updates over the years, including a large screened porch added in the 1950s, but it managed to retain its original style and historic charm, even as the neighborhood surrounding it grew and evolved. It’s not known how many of the houses built during the Florida Land Boom eventually fell into disrepair and were torn down and replaced.
In 1997, the Toombs House was added to the Whitfield Estates Lantana Avenue Historic District4 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic properties on the NRHP can qualify for grants and other benefits that help with restoration and maintenance.
