Traveler’s Haven - 2BR 2BA in Court District
Located in the former Hotel Kirkwood, this modern 2-bedroom condo puts you steps away from downtown events and entertainment. You’ll enjoy almost 1400 sq ft of private space on the 6th floor overlooking Des Moines’ eclectic 4th Street. The Kirkwood has old-world charm from the minute you walk into the 1930 art deco lobby, but your living space has all the modern conveniences you need in this great Court District location!
The space
Your space includes two bedrooms, each with a queen-size bed. The primary bedroom has an en suite bathroom and walk-in closet. An additional sofa bed is available in the living room. For your comfort and convenience you will also have an iron & ironing board, tub/shower in both bathrooms, hair dryers, full-size washer/dryer, full kitchen with oven/stove, full-size refrigerator, toaster, blender, dishwasher, and Keurig coffee machine. The main television and a smaller TV in the primary bedroom have streaming capabilities.
Note that no parking space is included with this rental, but a large city parking garage is located right behind our building on 5th Ave, and three additional parking garages are found within a three-block radius. Street metered parking is also available (Mon-Sat 9am-9pm, payable at kiosks or through the ParkDSM app). Outside of these hours, street parking is free.
The Kirkwood is in the Court Avenue Historic District. Literally dozens of restaurants, bars and attractions are within walking distance. The renowned Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market is right outside your door every Saturday morning May through October, and festivals such as the Des Moines Arts Festival and the World Food & Music Festival in Western Gateway Park are only a ten-minute walk.

This condo was home to Angie & Dennis, your hosts, for nearly a decade. After raising our children in the Des Moines suburbs, we moved downtown for a new life chapter. But no chapter lasts forever, and we currently live in a home in the country outside of Des Moines. This condo has our heart, though, and we can't part with it!
We have been Airbnb hosts for this space as well as for another smaller unit in the Kirkwood for quite some time, but recently decided to branch into Vrbo.

We love the Historic Court Avenue district! A grocery store is one block away, and you're surrounded by entertainment options! Fourth Street is quirky and fun. You've got Ricochet for fun games, The Empire across the street for morning coffee and then comfort food later in the day, the Royal Mile British pub a few steps down, a barber shop, pho restaurant, etc.
From May through October, on Saturday mornings you have the nationally-acclaimed Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market right outside your door. The riverwalk along the Des Moines River is just a few blocks away. There's a lot to love!

The Kirkwood Hotel is a historic building, now converted into residential. The art deco lobby is a relic from the past, and the old hotel reception desk reminds you of the building's history welcoming travelers back to when the golden age of train travel brought visitors to central Iowa.
