Por qué escogió este alojamiento
Soldotna is a fishing town on the Kenai Peninsula (called Alaska's Playground) about a 2.5-3 hours drive South of Anchorage. Just a 25 minute flight can get you from Anchorage to Kenai (20min away from Soldotna, her sister city). Both Soldotna and Kenai are along the Kenai River and offer world class fishing. The mighty Kenai River is the most popular sport fishing destination in Alaska. Each year there are runs of sockeye (red) salmon, king salmon, coho (silver) salmon, as well as trophy sized rainbow trout and dolly varden. The world record king salmon, which weighed about 44kg(97lbs) was caught in the Kenai River in 1985. Halibut, rock fish, and other fishing may be easily accessed in Homer (1 hour and 30minutes away), Seward (2 hours away), Ninilchik (50 minutes away), and the Kasilof River (about 15 minutes away). The drive to these towns and attractions is always worth it to take in the gorgeous and stunning views! The Kenai Peninsula also offers other amazing recreation choices in summer...hiking, camping, biking, clamming, boating, berry picking, hunting, kyaking, dip netting, gold panning and so much more. There is also many open-air markets happening twice weekly throughout the summer months, offering home grown food as well as locally crafted Alaska products. Then start the winter adventures that come alive when the days grow shorter and temperatures dip...cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, hockey, ice fishing, snowmobiling, trapping, dog mushing, fat biking, ice skating, chasing the Northern Lights, heli skiing, visiting coffee shops and so much more. And the best is the beauty..whether your in awe in the skies, or captivated by sightseeing in car or on foot, we know you'll have an unforgettable experience in the Land of The Midnight Sun!
Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial
You've chosen to stay on property that played a huge part of Alaska's history! The 2 log cabins on the hill by the main house were built in the 1960's as hired hand bunks, by the original owner, 'Tennessee' Miller.(The cabin listed on vrbo is restored and furnished, the other one is ongoing). This famous pioneer raised hundreds of sheep and mules on site, and was rumored to own 2-3000 acres of this same area! John C. 'Tennessee' Miller was an Alaska "catskinner" and heavy equipment operator, made famous in history for proving the feasibility of winter overland transport to the North Slope in 1964.Miller began this expedition from Fairbanks in February, leading a caravan of three D-7 Caterpillar tractors and logging sleds loaded with seismic exploration equipment and supplies, across the frozen tundra. The 'cat train' faced frigid -70F temperatures, frequent equipment breakdowns, and dangerous river crossings. It took 40 days to reach his destination-only 18 days were actual travel days, however. The rest of those days were spent repairing equipment, waiting out bad weather, and dealing with other hazards. 'Tennessee' Miller's role in opening up Alaska proved that the Anaktuvuk Pass could be used to link to the Alaska Railroad, and was crucial to the early exploration and development of the Prudhoe Bay oil field! This is also home to some amazing Alaska wildlife! One of them being a special pair of magnificant bald eagles, you can view their massive nest up in the trees in the middle of yard.Wildlife may be potentially dangerous,be respectful and cautious of moose, caribou, bears, lynx, wolves, and porcupines. These animals walk through the yard at random times of day/night. PLEASE NOTE:There is plenty of wild berries, plants, mushrooms, flowers, and mosses on our property,do not eat anything you're unsure of it's safety to consume!
