Due to the weather conditions, the inhabitants built houses in which all rural life could take place sheltered under one roof. At the same time, they decorated the façades of their houses with artistic sgraffito, which we can still admire today.Chesa Delfins is one of these farmhouses. With its well-preserved Renaissance sgraffito, dated 1594, it stands in a row of Engadine houses in the small village of Cinuos-chel. The sgraffito, mentioned in many art guides, depicts dolphins, among other things. Hence the name Chesa Delfins. In stark contrast to the otherwise bustling Upper Engadin, time seems to have stood still in Cinuos-chel. Cars drive past the village on the valley road towards St. Moritz. The village road itself is a dead end. There are small gardens and large meadows around the still very authentic farmhouses. The remaining village farmers have organic cattle, horses and sheep.Remodelling and restorationLike many old houses, the Chesa Delfins has been remodelled by its inhabitants over the centuries. However, the façades facing the village with their sgraffito, gate and small windows have been authentically preserved. In the 1930s, the dilapidated hay barn was replaced by an extension with a terrace and new bedrooms and bathrooms were built in the attic.During the last major renovation between 2017 and 2023, all rooms, the bathrooms and the heating system were modernised and the roof and several exterior walls were insulated. The Sulér, the 60 square metre work and passage room on the ground floor, was restored. Here you can once again walk on the uneven 16th century larch floorboards. The large entrance gate, dating from the same period as the sgraffito, sulér floor and stüva, was also restored.Holidays in the Chesa DelfinsThe interior of the Chesa Delfins is like travelling back in time: As in most Engadine houses, there are large and small wooden chests in the house. Numerous pieces of furniture such as tables, chairs and beds are made of Swiss stone pine. There are also modern lamps and many beautiful oriental carpets. There is a library with books from the old days. And anyone interested in the history of the Engadin and its houses will find specialised books. For connoisseurs, there is a marvellous restored grand piano from 1919.At Chesa Delfins you can enjoy a relaxing holiday. There is room for many guests in the large house. Thanks to the layout of the rooms, you can get out of each other's way if necessary and then eat together again at the large dining table in the cosy panelled Stüvetta. Or round off the evening in the original 16th century panelled Stüva (without heating in winter). In the exceptionally spacious kitchen with a four-metre-high round vault, you can cook together using contemporary equipment. Those who like to heat or cook with fire can do so with the cooker or the fireplace. There is a large fire bowl in the garden for barbecuing.Bedroom and bathroomThere are two sleeping areas on the upper floor, separated by the large gallery. The south-west facing area has a room with a large double bed and a room with a single bed. In between is a modern bathroom with a walk-in shower. The rooms have large south-west-facing windows and smell pleasantly of Swiss stone pine thanks to the panelling. There are also two bedrooms in the northern area. One room is located above the historic Stüva and has a double bed. The other room has two single beds that can be put together. These beds are 1.90 metres long. Here you can see into the open roof truss. There are two mattresses on the gallery under the skylight. The heights of the gallery are not secured (unsuitable for small children). From the gallery between the two sleeping areas, a small wooden staircase leads to the second, larger bathroom. It was installed above the vaulted ceiling of the kitchen. This bathroom has a bathtub and a floor-level shower.Extension and terraceFrom the Sulér, you enter through the old barn door into a spacious living room with a fireplace and various seating areas. From there you continue onto the large terrace, into the fenced garden and onto the meadow in front of the house. The house is surrounded by 1500 square metres of land.Views and sunshineCinuos-chel lies on the valley floor on the Inn, where it makes a loop before entering the gorge towards the Lower Engadine. Chesa Delfins offers unobstructed views to the south across the meadows towards the Inn to the opposite side of the mountain with the Piz d'Esan in the Swiss National Park. The house enjoys optimal sunshine throughout the day.Activities in summer and autumnThe nature in the immediate vicinity invites you to go for walks, hikes or bike tours. In autumn, children can follow the tracks of the deer in the nearby forest. Alternatively, you can watch them at night on the meadow in front of our house. The vast forests around Cinuos-chel are home to some of the best mushroom areas in the Upper Engadine.Or you can go swimming at the 'Copa Cinous-chel'. This is a beautiful sandy beach on the nearby banks of the Inn. The Inn is cold and refreshing! The children also take a dip in the village fountain 30 metres from the house. The entrance to the Swiss National Park at S-chanf is five minutes away by car. There is a large rope park and a playground with a small pub, particularly nice to sit in the evening sun. From here you can hike into the famous Val Trupchun, for example. There is a golf course in Zuoz and a climbing centre in S-chanf.Winter activitiesTake a walk on the cleared winter hiking trails around Cinuos-chel, either in the direction of S-chanf or Brail. A cross-country ski trail between S-chanf and Brail runs in the forest above the village, while the other trail from Zuoz to Zernez can be reached by a short walk over the Inn bridge. You can go bobsleighing on the winter hiking trails up the mountain or on various meadows around Cinuos-chel. There are also numerous snowshoe trails in the surrounding area. The railway in Celerina takes 20 minutes to reach the St. Moritz Corviglia ski area. Corvatsch, Diavolezza and Lagalb can be reached in 30 minutes. Young children can practise skiing in S-chanf on the Bügls baby lift. The family ski area of Zuoz (with free car park) is larger. There is also a ski school there.Public transport, shopping and eating outCinuos-chel is easily accessible by public transport. There are local bus, post bus and Rhaetian Railway stops in the village. The nearest shops are the Volg in S-chanf or the Co-op in Zuoz. For a good meal, take the short walk to the Restaurant Veduta at Cinuos-chel railway station. Or about two kilometres to the neighbouring village of Brail, where there are more restaurants (including a Michelin star/17 GaultMillau points) in the Hotel Inlain Cadonau.DepositWe ask our guests for a deposit, which must be paid by bank transfer up to seven days before the start of the holiday and will be refunded after inspection at the end of the holiday (maximum 14 days). All inclusiveFinal cleaning, bed linen, towels, tea towels, visitor's tax and WLAN are included in the price.
