Lusatian Lakeland
The Lusatian Lakeland is a man-made lake district in Lusatia. It was created by the flooding of disused open-cast lignite mines and is located in Lusatia in a triangle between Luckau (Brandenburg) in the north-west, the Cottbus region in the north-east and Görlitz in the south-east. This results in a total extension of around 80 kilometres from west to east and between 32 and 40 kilometres from north to south.
Lake Bärwald
Enjoy a bit of sunshine, action on the water or simply get away from it all! At Lake Bärwald, the third largest lake in the Lusatian Lakeland, you can experience a lot on and around the water, and the popular extensive sandy beaches invite you to swim and linger. They are the starting point for many amateur sailors who set sail from there. Thanks to the good wind conditions, Lake Bärwald is also an ideal place for sailing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. There are also other water sports such as motor boating, paddling, rowing, canoeing and even fishing. You can cycle, skate or even walk around the lake on a 21-kilometre paved route and enjoy a wonderful view of the water. In the immediate vicinity of the lake there are also playgrounds, several fire pits and barbecue areas, catering facilities, a skate park on the Boxberg shore, a safari game reserve in Uhyst, Segway tours and hire at Klitten harbour and many other leisure activities.

Car access
Lake Bärwald is located in the north-east of Saxony. In the immediate vicinity there is a connection to the B156 motorway, which leads from Großräschen to Bautzen. This is a feeder road to motorway 4, which provides a connection in the direction of Dresden or Görlitz, as well as to federal motorway 13 in the direction of Görlitz.

Bicycle bus from Bautzen
Regionalbus Oberlausitz GmbH and ZVON offer a convenient excursion option from Bautzen by bus and with or without a bicycle. Buses run on route 125 between Bautzen and Lake Bärwald on weekends and public holidays from April to October. Bicycles can be transported on the bicycle trailer, which can carry a total of 20 bikes.

Hoyerswerda Zoo
Whether zebra, kangaroo or sloth, animals from six continents can be experienced up close at Hoyerswerda Zoo. The family-friendly zoo is around half an hour away by car. Why not watch sloth couple Carlo and Carla or armadillo Günther at the show feedings in the tropical house? Around 1,000 animals of 120 species can be marvelled at on six hectares. In the adjoining castle, visitors can then embark on an interactive journey through time. The "ErlebnisReich" brings history to life with hands-on stations and a miniature castle. The modern "LehrReich" shows a time lapse from the Second World War to the centre of the Lusatian Lakeland.
Prince Pückler Park
The Fürst-Pückler-Park is located in the town of Bad Muskau, north of Lake Bärwald, and covers a total area of 830 hectares and is part of the World Heritage Site. Explore the park with its impressive buildings - whether by bike, on foot or even by boat on the water.
Bautzen
The large district town of Bautzen is the second largest town in Upper Lusatia and is one of the most beautiful places to visit thanks to its historic old town and numerous towers. Whether it's a guided tour of the "Stasi prison", a visit to the German-Sorbian Folk Theatre, relaxing by the dam or tasting original Bautzen mustard - the town is definitely worth a visit.
Nochten boulder park
The Nochten boulder park is just a 20-minute drive away. It's an experience for the whole family! A park landscape unique in Europe consisting of 7,000 boulders and 100,000 plants. Spread over an area of 20 hectares, visitors have the opportunity to explore seven park areas: Rock garden, pond garden, heather garden, heather moor, forest lake, rock garden and Little Scandinavia. For younger guests, there is a lovingly designed adventure playground with climbing boulders, a labyrinth in the caravanserai and a water playground around the pumping fountain. At the modern visitor centre, visitors can explore the exhibition "Icy, huge, exciting. Ice Age Adventure" can be explored at the modern visitor centre. Guided tours of the park are also available.
Krabat Mill
In Schwarzkollm, 40 kilometres away, the legend of Krabat is brought back to life at the Krabat Mill adventure farm, where the servants' house was the first building to be erected and serves as a meeting point and accommodation. The arcade invites you into the rustic atmosphere of the farmhouse parlour with homemade pancakes. In the neighbouring miller's tower, guests of all ages can listen to the stories of the Black Miller and admire the original props from the 2008 film adaptation, and various events and festivals are held throughout the year, such as the Krabat Festival in July. There are also guided tours, children's and youth projects and exhibitions on the traditions and customs of the Sorbs.
Theatre in the ear
A unique experience can be found on the Boxberg shore of Lake Bärwald. A replica of a human ear modelled from earth. This huge ear is around 350 metres long, 250 metres wide and around 18 metres high. There is a viewing point at the highest point, which offers an incredible view over the lake. There is a highlight in the auricle - an amphitheatre with 270 seats. Various events take place in the open-air theatre from May to the end of September.
