A quirky mid century house located in the quiet leafy suburb of Newington. Renovated to respect the simple charm of the 1960's, the Retro retreat offers guests an opportunity to relax and unwind and has been carefully curated with a mix of old and new decor throughout. Big windows welcomes natural light and makes the house feel open, bright and inviting. Close to Ballarats shopping precinct, eateries, Lake Wendoree and the Botanical Gardens - Armstrong street Ballarat's culinary strip is a brief stroll or quick uber up the road :Spanish Mexican, Pizza or Asian complete with a delicious cocktail or two to finish off a memorable night out. The retreat is your perfect home from home - to explore Ballarat and the Goldfields.
The entire house is yours and can sleep up to 4 guests - and a large backyard for your fur baby who will love the open space to run free. Its an ideal retreat for a romantic getaway, a girls weekend, or mini break to relax and recharge.
There are two generous size bedrooms - one king and one queen, decorated to respect the simple charm of the 1960s - comfortable beds, quality fresh linen and electric blankets to keep you warm on a cold winters night.
The kitchen is small but has everything you need to make your stay comfortable. Our quirky 1960s kitchen has plenty of kit to whip up a delicious feast/ or if you prefer set up a cheese board a glass of wine and you're set for relaxing night in. There is a bbq and small back deck to relax and unwind or sit back and watch a fav on netflix in the comfort of the lounge - and we offer free fast unlimited WIFI, a 50" smart TV, and plenty of books and magazine. A natural born bower bird at heart I have curated the house with found and foraged objects to respect the charm of the 1960s.
There is a dining room with a mid century dining table - a space to enjoy a delicious feast after foraging for local produce - Ballarat is becoming a food hub with plenty of places to seek out your local feast and you will be spoilt for choice.
Feel free to bring your bikes and enjoy exploring the magical charm of Ballarat - a regional hub and home to many artists, foodies, beer makers and gardeners. Or use the house as a base to explore other regional towns that are within close proximity to Ballarat - and perhaps discover a gold nugget or two.
We look forward to welcoming you to our quirky 1960s Retro retreat and hope you enjoy your stay as much as we love the house and central location. To date guests have marvelled at the simplicity and location of the house - a home away from home.

Comfortable and clean

Narelle was very welcoming and helpful. The house itself was well equipped, the beds were very comfortable and the place was spotlessly clean. It has a great enclosed backyard and is located in a quiet street. It has been our best b&b experience to date!

Ballarat and the rent house were friendly and great. Very relaxing. Good beds, quiet street & neighbours. Furnishing of house was quirky and 50ish(?). Hope you replace the BBQ soon.

Photos lie!

The photos don't do this place any where near the justice it deserves. Authentic retro feel with all the mod cons. We felt relaxed and comfortable the minute we entered. Super comfy bed. The whole place was really clean and we lived the little extras we didn't expect. Narelle always answered immediately, we walked into town easily, I'd highly recommend

Lovely spot for our short stay in The Rat

Such a lovely spot for a short stay with our dog. We could trip into the cbd easily, and find lots of green space to walk the dog. She also loved having a fully enclosed and safe backyard to frolic in.The kitchen is well appointed with everything you need. BBQ worked wonderfully for our dinner one night. Great pub nearby for another dinner. Beds super comfy, and the shower is divine! Washing machine and clothesline on site meant we could get a load washed and dried one day, saving us bringing so much laundry home. Thanks so much for the booking! Loved it

What a fantastic little gem! The owner was fantastic and check in was very easy. House was great and we had a lovely time in Ballarat. Would highly recommend.

Pawesome pet friendly place!

Narelle’s place was ‘pawfect’ for us and and our two small dogs. It was super clean with a nice modern bathroom and very cosy warm with the heat pump (that was on upon arrival!). We loved all the little touches with milk, juice, loaf of bread and Easter eggs on arrival. The location is also handy for walks around the lake and parks as well as a stroll to the main street for coffee! Narelle is a fantastic host with great communication- would highly recommended!

Very cosy house with all the amenities, close to parks and the city

We enjoyed our stay here in this cosy 60s house and retro aesthetics with all the modern amenities. Great location right near parks and just a few minutes drive from town. Nice back yard for the dog to run around.

Great New Discovery

Had a wonderful four night stay in this cozy home. I didn't want to leave. First booked it because my regular house was unavailable. So glad now that it was as I have discovered this place. Lovely to have little things like the bread and spread, milk and juice, and for someone who had forgotten their shower cap - there was one there! My dog loved the backyard which was perfectly safe for a small dog who would definitely find any escape routes. We would certainly love to stay again.

Lovely 60s style escape

Narelle’s place is beautiful. Clean and spacious with a nice 60s design vibe. The backyard was secure and a perfect space for pets. The beds are extremely comfortable. Highly recommend.

Delightful Retro Retreat

We had a wonderful weekend. Kitchen and fridge well stocked with coffee pods, tea, milk, loaf of bread, juice and condiments. Welcoming music when we arrived. Christmas tree was up. Great location in walking distance to Lake Wendouree. Peaceful and charming neighbourhood.

Snug and stylish

A really well-secured, styled and stocked house to call home and it felt like our home instantly. I feel the host has succeeded in giving this home comfortable upgrades which made the place feel fresh and going above standard with attractive styling, quality curtains, furniture and linen making for very comfy rooms and a King bed I now need at my own home.! A huge yard for our furry friend to explore and good shelter for him to be out of all the rain we endured. Thank you so much for hosting us, this will be our choice of accommodation next Ballarat visit.

A comfortable house

Three Night stay

Property was as described, clean, comfortable and well stocked with things we may need, the beds were very comfortable. The freshly squeezed orange juice left for us in the fridge was a lovely surprise. Communication prior and during the stay was great, next time I stay in Ballarat I will definitely be booking this place.

Retro getaway in heart of Ballarat

We had a wonderful stay with our fur baby. Narelle has thought of everything you could possibly need for a wonderful weekend away. Close to Lake Wendouree, Victoria Park (we did 2 park runs), Ballarat central. House was warm, bed so comfy, kitchen exceptionally well equipped. We will be back 🤩

When we arrived the owner had put the heater and lights on it was so cozy and warm. The house has everything a visitor would need and so close to shops and restaurants. Thanks for making your house a - ‘home’ we’ll be back …. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Don’t Miss Out On This Gorgeous Retro Gem

I had the pleasure and privilege of being the 1st guest to stay in this lovely home, during a weekend getaway in beautiful Ballarat, after not being able to find other suitable, vacant accommodation. The home has been beautifully renovated, whilst remaining true to its retro vibe and has a such a lovely, relaxing atmosphere. It’s location offers the best of both worlds, being tucked away in a nice quiet street, yet is a short drive to all that Ballarat has to offer. I will definitely re-book in future.

Hi my name is Narelle and I live in Central Victoria.
My partner Simon and I are farmers/ foodies who live at Little Hampton and produce healthy organic produce. We have two dogs Tillie the Toller and Ronnie the Springer and thats why we love people to bring along their fur babies when staying at the Retro Retreat as dogs are important and should be able to travel and stay wherever you venture. We love to cook and travel and we are in the process of setting up accommodation on our farm at Little Hampton. An ideal staycation for those wanting to escape the city and venture to the country for some time out. Our property at Ballarat is a great place to escape and when not working on the farm we like to endugle ourselves by staying at the Retro Retreat - Close to amenties and central to many of Ballarats cafes and restaurants. The Botanical gardens home to the annual Begonia festival, there is so much to see and do and we hope you enjoy Ballarat as much as we do .....

The Retro Retreat is a great place to stay as the house is central, close to Lake Wendouree and offers guests the best of both worlds. You can stay in and relax or head out and explore some of the great cafes, restaurants and bars that are popping up throughout Ballarat. The house is quirky and my aim was to create a space that feels like a home away from home - and you feel transported back to a time when life was simple.
Depending on your circumstances - the house is located close to eateries, shopping, hospitals and schools - and we cater for all occasions. For those who have fur babies Victoria Park is a 2 minute walk and a great place for dogs to run off lead and get that well earned exercise or chase a ball or two.
