Acerca de este alojamiento
Northern Haven on a Crystal-Clear Lake (guest cabin)
Secluded by trees for full privacy, this charming two-bedroom (+ a den) cottage is furnished with a fully equipped, recently renovated kitchen with new appliances; a private deck with BBQ (+complimentary propane), and a three-piece bathroom with washer and dryer. A selection of outdoor and indoor games and toys; books, DVDs and VHSs for all ages; two TV sets and high speed unlimited WIFI will ensure a pleasant stay, whichever way you prefer to spend your time.
The space is suitable for families with children (there is a pack ‘n play / travel crib, and baby safety gates), or couples seeking a restful break from their busy lives.
Clean linens (100% cotton) are provided on the beds, as well as oversized cotton towels for indoor use. Water in the building is supplied from the lake and is treated with UV light. Although safe for consumption, to avoid any mishaps, we provide our guests with complimentary bottled water (18L jugs) and a ceramic water tower dispenser. For those who need to stay connected, or work while away with family or friends, the semi-private loft is furnished with an office desk and a printer.
The cabin is connected by a short trail with the private shore that offers a stunning view of the lake, that, much of the time, is enjoyed by few visitors even at the peak season. We make available for our guests a good, stable canoe, a single recreational and a tandem kayak, and two SUPs. Two metal boats can be propelled by oars and fuelled by the power of your own muscles, for a quiet fishing venture. Guests can use any of the selection of paddles, oars and a few additional beach and lawn toys that are stored in the blue shed on the shore, and in the sauna. You can relax in a traditional wood-fired cedar sauna located next to the woodshed; roast s’mores over the campfire on the lakeshore; or contemplate the stars against the pitch-dark sky while listening to the waves lapping against the shore...
A visit to this property, situated deep in the Mississagi river valley, in the rugged terrain of Algoma county, is an opportunity to enjoy the nature away from the crowds typical of the cottage country near large urban areas. A unique feature of this particular location is the stunning cliff that, on the east side of the lake, soars vertically ca. 300 feet from the Canadian Shield, providing a nesting haven for falcons. Under the sunrays that reflect off the rocks, the cliff changes colours at different times of the day and over the seasons, inspiring awe at its beauty. An easy hike to the top of the cliff offers a marvellous view of the surrounding lakes and endless forests (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/ontario/rock-candy-lookout).
A visit in May and early June is ideal for witnessing the awakening of nature after a deep Winter freeze. In the Summer, one can engage in a variety of water recreational activities, stroll on the hiking trails, and shop for fresh organic produce and locally made products from area farms, including a couple of nearby berry-picking or alpaca farms. There are countless lakes and waterfalls throughout the wider Algoma region to be discovered, including the Aubrey Falls Provincial Park with its hiking trails (50-minute drive from the cottage). In the Fall, breath-taking views of lakes and rivers amid the changing foliage covering the rolling hills, make it worthwhile visiting this gorgeous region that inspired the Group of Seven. Given the right conditions, you might be able to spot the Northern Lights! (https://www.northernontario.travel/algoma-country/auroras-in-algoma).
The closest store is the Tunnel Lake Trading Post (a 10-minute walk from the cottage): it has emergency cooking supplies and pantry basics, a superior stock of camping, fishing, and hunting supplies; a small LCBO, and a gas station. You may be able to arrange a boat rental with the trading post for fishing on the Tunnel Lake, mere minutes away from the cottage.
The nearby towns - Little Rapids, Thessalon, and Bruce Mines - offer essential services and conveniences such as grocery stores, LCBOs, pharmacies and health services, cafes, or restaurants, and, for antiquing enthusiasts, several antiques stores that may hold a hidden treasure for you.
The cottage is located ca. 1.5-hour south-east from Sault Ste. Marie; 2.5 hours west from Sudbury; 7 hours north from Toronto or west from Ottawa. Well-worth the trip - saves you from the urge to get on the plane and globe-trot!
Please note that this cottage is not ideal for smokers or those travelling with pets, as we do not allow smoking or pets on the property.

Acerca de su propietario/a
Propietario/a: Anka
I live in a big city and work in a time-consuming, people-centred, high-intensity job. I find solace in escaping to the cottage with my family when our busy schedules allow us to do so. During the Fall and Spring seasons, I enjoy waking up early on a brisk morning. Walking over the central circle of the property to fetch the wood, I can hear the waves break on the shore and the birds sing in the surrounding trees. I start the fire to welcome my family for breakfast in a warm cabin, with the views of the trees, the mountain, and the lake. In the summer, I love going for a morning swim or out in a kayak, soaking in the silence and the unique beauty of the area. Nights are pitch dark and quiet, the darkness allowing a spectacular sight of the stars and the moon. Staying at the cottage is an experience that restores body, mind and spirit.
Por qué escogió este alojamiento
This property and the surrounding area are populated with mixed forests of yellow birch, pine, cedar, and maple trees. Juniper and wild berry shrubs that cover the grounds yield fruit throughout the summer months. Seagulls perch on the docks along the lake, and, if you venture out to the lake in the early morning, you might spot a blue heron resting on a rock, or an occasional fish jumping out of the water. At sunset, the calls of the loons extend over the lake. You might see chipmunks, rabbits, muskrats, foxes, beavers, and if you venture even further into the wild you may encounter deer, bears and moose. Modern technology rarely interferes with silence, the singing of birds, and pitch-dark nights ideal for stargazing. During the week, hardly anyone is on the lake, as other cottagers often visit only on weekends; even then, there is little human presence disturbing its peace. The remoteness, peace and solitude of this location give a sense of an escape from the hustle and bustle of a big city. The spectacular view of the mountain sloping gently over the lake, and the dance of colours with the changing sunlight create a sense of awe - which scientists have discovered to contribute to our overall sense of wellbeing.
Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial
This extraordinary home, at once unassuming and striking, was built by a beloved local architect and builder who applied his unique art and craftsmanship to timber-frame construction in the Algoma region.
Timber frame homes are structures built using a method of construction that dates back to ancient Egyptian and Roman times. They are built from large wood posts and beams that form the structural support of the home and require no interior load-bearing walls. The timbers are joined by connecting a mortise (hole) on the end of one timber with a corresponding tenon (tongue) that fits precisely and tightly. In true timber framing, the joints are secured with wooden pegs — no metal fasteners are used at all (more about this building technique: https://www.nahb.org/other/consumer-resources/types-of-home-construction/timber-frame-homes).
A wood burning stove, many windows and smart organization of the guest cabin create a feeling of coziness - 'cozy' being a concept of living originating in northern European cultures (Denmark, Norway, Scotland?) and that means something like "snug, comfortable, warm."
Hence, a stay in this home is an opportunity to experience an eco-friendly architecture constructed according to one of the oldest home-building techniques. The uniqueness of the architecture is matched by the natural beauty surrounding it. And, we (the owners) are generous hosts, for we provide for our guests all the comfort and consideration we would want for ourselves.
