Hi! I’m Sylvia, and I work part-time for the public service and (very) part-time as a server-sommelier at a casual fine dining restaurant here in Carleton Place. My husband and I have been hosting travellers since 2012 and are currently Superhosts on another platform.
We first discovered Airbnb back in 2011, when we stayed in a cozy flat on St-Viateur in Montréal — it was such a wonderful experience that it inspired us to start hosting ourselves.
Our home is a century property full of character and charm. Sylvia’s mum (affectionately known as Granny) lives with us in the winter, and in the summer we rent out her “Granny Suite” to guests. We live in the main house, while the studio suite is located at the back of the property on the main level, with its own private entrance.
We love sharing our space and our community with others. Carleton Place has a welcoming small-town feel, with great restaurants, trails, and local breweries — perfect for exploring on foot or by bike.
When we’re not hosting, you’ll probably find us cycling, running, or enjoying a craft beer after a long ride. We also love spending time with our two kids and discovering new places together.
Hosting gives us the chance to meet wonderful people from all over and help them enjoy the same kind of warm, comfortable stays that made us fall in love with the idea of home sharing in the first place. We hope you’ll feel right at home here too!

Por qué escogió este alojamiento
We chose the Museum District in Carleton Place because it perfectly combines small-town charm, walkable convenience, and a wonderful sense of community. This neighborhood is friendly, peaceful, and full of local history — the kind of place where neighbors wave as you walk by and where everything you need is just a short stroll away.
We had been searching for a century home with a secondary suite in downtown Carleton Place since 2016, and we finally found the perfect one — just down the street from our former home! We bought and sold during the tail end of the pandemic, and it’s been one of the best decisions we’ve made.
The Museum District truly captures the spirit of Carleton Place. The Carleton Place and Beckwith Heritage Museum, located just behind our property, brings the town’s past to life with fascinating exhibits and a beautiful setting. Right in our backyard, there’s also a peaceful community labyrinth — a hidden gem for quiet reflection or a leisurely walk.
Downtown is just a short walk away, offering cozy cafés, locally owned shops, and beautifully preserved heritage buildings. Whether you’re grabbing a morning coffee, browsing the farmer’s market (Saturday mornings), or enjoying a meal along the river, everything feels close, connected, and authentic.
What we enjoy most about living here is the genuine sense of belonging — the friendliness, the relaxed pace, and the pride people take in their town. It’s a neighborhood that feels both historic and alive, and we love being able to share a little piece of it with our guests.

Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial
Our home is a beautifully preserved century property that backs onto the Carleton Place and Beckwith Heritage Museum and its peaceful community labyrinth. We fell in love with the home’s character, the leafy yard, and the covered terrace — a perfect place to relax and enjoy the quiet charm of the Museum District.
The original house carries a fascinating piece of local history. It was once home to McFadden Furs, a well-known local business founded by Hiram McFadden (1858–1936). Born in nearby Ashton, Ontario, Hiram began his career as an engineer with the Edwards Lumber Company before turning to the fur trade. A passionate naturalist and marksman, he represented Canada on the Bisley team four times and won the Earl and Countess Grey medal for high aggregate score in 1911.
When Hiram’s daughter Edie married Harry Umphry in 1927, Hiram passed the business to his new son-in-law. Harry expanded the operation and added a large extension on the east side of the William Street house to create a cool storage vault for furs. The business served the community for decades before closing upon Harry’s retirement in 1963.
While the main house retains its original charm and architectural details, the studio and Granny Suite are more modern additions at the back of the property. These spaces were designed with comfort and convenience in mind, offering guests a private and peaceful stay with all the modern amenities you’d expect — while still being part of the property’s historic setting.
It’s more than just a place to stay — it’s a blend of local history and modern comfort, nestled in one of Carleton Place’s most historic neighborhoods. Whether you’re here to explore, unwind, or simply enjoy the shady terrace, you’ll feel both welcomed and connected to the town’s story.
