Martinsicuro is the northernmost town on the Abruzzo coast in the Teramo area and is one of the “Seven Sisters,” the coastal towns of the Teramo area (Martinsicuro, Alba Adriatica, Tortoreto, Giulianova, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Pineto, and Silvi Marina).
It is a modern seaside resort on the Abruzzo Adriatic coast, situated where the Val Vibrata valley meets the plain. It is 47 km from Teramo and 32 km from Ascoli Piceno.
The Roman roads Salaria and Traiana crossed here, and the Roman settlements of Truentum and Castrum Truentinum once stood on this site. Pliny the Elder reports that Truentum was founded by the Viburni. After becoming Roman, it developed into an important commercial port and trade hub, so much so that the port area was fortified and thus took on the name Castrum Truentinum. In the 4th century, it served as a bishopric. The fall of the Empire also marked the end of Truentum’s prosperity.
The inhabitants moved to the hills, where they were better sheltered from barbarian raids and attacks by Saracen pirates from the sea. In the 16th century, the Tronto River marked the border between the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples. Once again, the area became strategically important; in 1547, Emperor Charles V ordered the construction of a watchtower that also served as a customs post for the Papal States. The spread of marshes at the mouth of the Tronto River made the area unhealthy and sparsely populated. It was only with Italian unification that the situation began to improve, thanks to land reclamation and the opening of the coastal railway line with a station in Martinsicuro. The subsequent growth of tourism led the town to break away from its status as a hamlet of Colonnella and become an independent municipality in 1963. Its name derives from the Tower of Charles V, more precisely from the name of its builder, Captain Martin de Segura.
Be sure to visit the Tower of Charles V, located at Via Colle di Marzio 1. Commissioned by Emperor Charles V in 1547, it is the northernmost watchtower of what was once the Kingdom of Naples. A multi-story structure with a quadrangular scarp base, it was built according to a design by the Spanish architect Pirro Aloio Srivà for the nobleman Martin De Segura, from whom the town of Martinsicuro takes its name. On the opposite bank of the Tronto River stood a counterpart watchtower, which no longer exists. The east facade features ceremonial windows and a niche with two columns and beautiful capitals supporting a pediment bearing an inscription commemorating Emperor Charles V. The aedicule features the double-headed eagle, heraldic emblems, the Golden Fleece, and various symbolic figures.
We live about 30 km from the apartment and are available to ensure that your stay is as pleasant as possible.
