Información de la propiedad

Historical Dogtrot Chestnut Log Cabin.

Maple Spring Farm is located in the gorgeous foothills of Amherst County, VA very near Nelson County and Piney River. Secluded, quiet, private and pup friendly! Very close to Piney River, Wintergreen Ski Resort, Tye River, James River, wineries, breweries, distilleries, hiking, and fishing, in a lovely private setting. Ideal setting for artists, families, couples, and small events.
This Dogtrot Cabin was built in the 1860's and restored to its original glory and then some. Updated for modern day living, this log home features two queen bedrooms upstairs, and a large full bath on the main floor, as well as two fireplaces(one working) and a full kitchen with seating for four. The living room is very cozy with fireplace and rockers. Granny's feather stuffed sofa will make you feel like you have gone back in time. There are sitting areas and period furniture throughout the cabin for quiet reading and conversation nooks or just relaxing. Out back there is a beautiful stone patio with a grill, picnic table and furniture. In the front is a shady porch for viewing the sunset or enjoying morning coffee or an afternoon beverage in the shade.
We welcome up to four guests per night. Dogtrot log houses are rare; This home was built by an African American man from New York after the Civil War. Originally it had two chimneys, one of which collapsed years ago and now there sits an addition in its place with a full bathroom. The other chimney is fully restored and lined for use today. The landscaping is in keeping with traditional plantings of the era with a few extras. We even have a few artifacts to show from the excavation of the patio and old fireplace foundation.
There are plenty of trails to explore on our farm on foot or mountain bike. The main house is 400 feet up the hill where we welcome visitors and enjoy meeting our guests! You can pick up the keys there.

There is a campsite which can accommodate up to 10 people in 2 tents or 2 RV's. Power, water and a porta-potty included for extra fee if available. Contact owner for more information.
Our family includes four friendly dogs and three cats that might come down for a visit if you're outside and love to go on walks around the property.
This property is quite unique and cozy, and we are sure it will satisfy your outdoor getaway needs! At the end of the road, traffic is well, there is none other than us.
There are plenty of activities available in the area. Ski slopes and tubing slopes 25 minutes away at Wintergreen. The George Washington National Forest has several access points nearby. The Lockn’ Festival is 15 minutes away. The surrounding beauty of the area is an excellent location for plein-air artists. There are several breweries, wineries, a couple distilleries, food establishments within 15-30 minute drive. There are swimming and fishing lakes in the county that are free for public use. Three golf courses in the area including Poplar Grove in Amherst and Wintergreen just up 151 north in Nelson County. Trout fishing and hunting are close by in the National Forest lands. Piney River Rail Trail is 4 miles away and is 14 mile roundtrip. Bicycles, horses, dogs and humans welcome.. There are three small convenience stores and a dollar General with in 5 miles. Food Lion Grocery in Amherst or Lovingston which are 15 miles either direction.

Rustic with modern amenities
WE loved this little place in this historic house. The house was nicely refurbished, with added modern conveniences, There wasn’t TV to watch, but that is exactly what we wanted for our getaway. We liked the fact that we could have wi-if to look up local attractions. The house has split unit heating and air in the rooms, so we could adjust temperatures as needed. New modern bathroom was very nice. There isn’t much privacy as we could hear what our friends were saying and talking about, so if you are traveling with friends, be aware that the house doesn’t have much sound insulation. This only added to the charm for us. Decor was vey true to the style of the house and the beds and large comfy couch were nice perks. Outside is a nice fire pit for enjoying being outside at night. Quiet and calm. There are friendly rescue dogs on the property that come to visit and hang out. Our friend had brought her dog along and he had a blast exploring the property and interacting with the owner’s dogs. There was a slight mixup about when we were to arrive, but that was addressed right away and fixed. The owner was very friendly and helpful, we enjoyed visiting with her and she even brought us a delicious home made dessert one night that was perfect. As far as the area goes, there isn’t much to do unless you are willing to take a little drive, but that didn’t bother us as we were just there to escape and relax. There is a nice hiking trail on the property.

My name is Suzy. Currently, my son Toney and I live here at Maple Spring Farm. We grow hops, a few blueberry bushes, as well as hardwood, and pine trees. We enjoy cycling, hiking, camping, and music. One of my favorite things to do is dive into the history of this beautiful old mountain farm and help my guests learn about and enjoy the tons of fun in the area.

Por qué eligió esta propiedad

The Dogtrot log house is a relic of a life gone by in these old mountains. The Chestnut trees used to build it were abundant in this area until they began to die out from blight. The wood is incredibly bug resistant and very sturdy. A Dogtrot is two log houses with a breezeway in between that were all roofed over as one house. The breezeway was typically sided and had the front and rear doors of the home. This home has some apotropaic symbols which are said to keep out the evil spirits. The original ceiling in the bedrooms has been preserved as it was and a new roof adorns this old house.
The original owner was a free African American man named George Washington. He and his wife and children moved here from New York after the Civil War. He was a farmer /laborer according to U.S. Census records. The logs were cut here, and the stones used to build the chimneys and foundation were also found on the property. The mortar was made from sand, clay and creek water below the house. The floorboards, made of old growth poplar and yellow pine in the living room were originally upstairs in a bedroom lining the walls. The original chinking was removed and replaced with modern day insulation, lath, cement, and plaster. Of course, the entire process of restoration has been somewhat of an archeological dig in a sense. It is truly amazing what pops out of the ground when footers and patios are dug. The restoration was completed by a whole bunch of friends, neighbors, some independent contractors and the grace of God. It was a long haul. Nothing makes us more happy than to know Mr. and Mrs. Washington's amazing home lives again and will be enjoyed and appreciated by many friends old and new for a long time to come.
Relax and take in the sights, sounds and fresh air. As the "aka" implies(lower head, lift feet) the perfect imperfections of this handmade home from the earth make it all the more ideal.

Qué distingue a esta propiedad

Rare, historically preserved Chestnut log home. Lots of nature, fresh air, excellent drinking water, and wildlife. We even have a resident (outside) black snake that keeps the rodent population in check.
