Enjoy up country Hilo at it's finest with a new, private home in a gated community. Our 1500' elevation makes a perfect cool, peaceful evening respite after a day of beach going, hiking at Volcano National Park and enjoying Hilo's dining and entertainment. The property features a distant ocean view, many fruit trees, aquaponics, gardens, plenty of animals including dogs, Angus cows, chickens and a macaw named Li'i! Interacting with the animals on our ranch is part of the property's charm.

It was a comfortable stay, the owners were friendly, the farm animals were sweet, we picked fruit in the yard, listened to the frogs and birds at night, and enjoyed our evenings away from the noise of the city.We loved having 3 bathrooms for our family and a washer/dryer in our hale.Thank you Steve & Debby!

Debbie was a gem! We had an unexpected hiccup in our trip and Debbie had a few extra things we needed handy. The place is awesome, bed slept great and super clean. We’d stay again

Our family had a wonderful stay. Debbie and Steve were friendly, helpful and responsive when we had any questions or issues. The house is lovely and the grounds are beautiful as well. Our boys enjoyed the farm fresh eggs and picking fruit off the trees surrounding the house.

The Broken Dog Ranch was better than we expected! It was peaceful, quiet, and felt like home. We were able to relax and get a good night rest after each day of exploring. It was clean and had everything we needed to cook meals. The farm fresh eggs and fruit were a treat and the cows, dogs, and birds were memorable. Our kids loved them all. The owners are great and we wish we could've stayed longer.

Broken Dog ranch is an adorable property just outside of Hilo. Debbie and her husband were kind, responsive, and met us when we arrived to tell us about the property. The place was very clean and you could feel their pride in it! They were super responsive to all our questions and accommodated a late checkout which allowed us to spend a stress-free sunrise on Mauna Kea, grab breakfast, and then come back and pack up on our last day on the island. The kitchen is well stocked with countertop appliances — as shown in the pictures there’s no stove or oven, just an induction cooktop and toaster oven so I wouldn’t recommend planning a complicated meal. But it should be everything needed for a short stay. As others have noted, the coqui frogs are definitely loud, but 4/5 of our group really enjoyed falling asleep to them. 1 found them too loud, but she was the one on the air mattress in the living room so perhaps theyre louder there than in the bedrooms.Lastly, I would note that one of their puppies does nip at the ankles so until she’s gone through some training, this may not be the place for young children. Overall we enjoyed our stay at Broken Dog Ranch as a jumping spot to explore the eastern side of Hawaii!

Beautiful remote location off the beaten path for ultimate relaxation. The kids loved feeding the cows each morning, and the farm fresh eggs were a treat. Mahalo for sharing your ranch!

Serene Adventure Base

We had an awesome stay at the Broken Dog Ranch. The house was roomy and comfortable and we all slept well. Loved the peaceful setting, spacious grounds, picking fruit, interacting with the animals, eating fresh eggs.... The hosts are very nice people.

Excellent Property

This property has an excellent location! After a busy day of adventures it is a wonderful quiet location. The owners have chickens and fruit trees. There were a dozen eggs waiting for us when we arrived and we picked oranges and limes! The owners were awesome and the property is beautiful!

Beautiful Location Upland of Hilo

My family enjoyed our stay at this beautiful location. The Ohana dwelling had everything we needed and was very clean. We appreciated Debbie sharing some of the fresh chicken eggs. We didn't get to enjoy the surroundings too much, thanks to Hurricane Hone. We will definitely look to stay here on our next visit to Hilo.

Clean and spacious Ohana on beautiful ranch

The property served as an ideal home base for our party of five adults. We stayed three nights to explore the east side of the island - all major attractions and sites (VNP, Waipio Valley, Rainbow Falls) were within easy driving distance. The space was clean and spacious and had all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. We loved interacting with the animals on-site, especially the macaw. Overall, a very peaceful and pleasant stay, and we would love to return to the property again when we visit the Big Island!

Broken Dog Ranch

The hosts are amazing, super friendly and generous. The house was perfect for us 3 adults and one toddler. The house has everything you need and more! The location is a bit off the beaten path but lends to quiet and relaxing vacation! Thank you Steve and Debbie!! We hope to return!!

Cooler, quiet home away from home

Debbie and Steve were very welcoming. Debbie welcomed us as we got to the property. They shared their knowledge of the area and their fruits and fresh eggs. The home is beautiful! It was so relaxing! It’s cooler than in town and quiet. No city noise. We will definitely stay again, if we make it back.
